Marca: Liverpool join the race for Sahin

So are we getting Sahin? Pretty pleased if so.

We're going to end up with a team of midfielders though.

Two out of Adam, Spearing, Shelvey and Henderson will surely have to go.

Think about it - we'd be getting the player who was the Bundesliga's best young talent 2 years ago ... That's a pretty big coup, even if it's for only one year.

As for the last sentence - I Think Adam is gone and Spearing will be pushed back to a more suitable reserve role. I think he keeps Shelvey + Henderson, as we'll probably end up playing 60+ games this year ... We can't assume the big 3-4 will be available for all of 'em.

Shelvey just signed a new contract and started two competitive games in a row. He ain't going nowhere.
Brendan doesn't seem to rate Henderson, which doesn't worry me at all.

Not looking too good for Henderson the way things stand.

We need a big squad, but i don't think Rodgers would go out and spend £15m on Joe Allen if he rated Henderson(highly).

If we pull this and one of the Dempsey or Tello deals off and save Agger we will have a tasty squad for the season. Cover and competition for every position and although I've been saying Suso, Raheem etc arent ready in recent weeks it will only serve to up their performance level for the season as well meaning hopefully by seasons end one of them might just be able to make the step up. I'd be worried about an out and out goal scorer but if Borini clicks and Suarez hits form then they could conceivably get 30 between them which would be a great return. C'mon now senior management and bring these deals home!!

Henderson wouldn't be playing Allen's position ... So I'm not sure this is relevant. He obviously wants 5-6 capable players that can interchange in the middle - be it b/c of 'rotation,' or less important fixtures, or League/FA/Europa cup. We have 6 excellent options if we can line up with Gerrard, Allen, Lucas, Henderson, Shelvey and Sahin. Would be very very happy with that.

Talk about falling down the ladder. Henderson going from being a certain starter to 5th/6th choice if Sahin joins.

I hope he doesn't bail out on us and fuck off to Arsenal, I've got high hopes for this deal, probably even moreso than Borini and Allen (both of whom I'm more than happy about us signing).

All things being equal I'd expect him to choose Arsenal over us right now, I think they might go close in the title race this season

Yeah, it looks like it could be a reality. I'd never have imagined it a year or two ago when he was playing for Dortmund. He played the holding role in a 4-2-3-1 with Bender as the out-and-out defensive midfielder, and he was just incredible. Passing is Alonsoesque, with some Xavi short passing thrown in, but he can also defend really well. His left foot is special, so he'd likely be the corner-taker. Really excited to see us in for him, it shows Rodgers knows what's needed and why.

You're right, I reckon: It'll be a team full of midfielders. Unfortunately only a handful of them are good enough to really challenge at the top level. Gerrard, Allen, Lucas and Sahin are all really good midfield players, but others either aren't ready or fail to quite make the grade we need to push on.

Adam will likely go to Fulham in a deal for Dempsey, which I'm fairly happy with; not because Dempsey is a player on the level or Sahin or Gerrard, but because he can cover a number of positions across the midfield and attack, which is just what we need, having lost the likes of Maxi, Kuyt, Bellamy and even Aquilani, we need somebody available to take up those positions and chip in with goals.

Shelvey is a talent, I'd say, but needs to kick on. Maybe he'll stick around and pick up some games. Spearing isn't even close to what we need, in my opinion. He's not got it. Then there's Henderson. He has been a non-entity, but I'm certain he'll get games. He's a young lad, and has technique. Hopefully Rodgers can bring something out of him, because last season he was to the footballing world what a soggy ricecake is to the culinary world.

So whilst we'll have a lot of 'em, not all of them are good enough to be here. A microcosm of the club over the last 10 years, I guess. It's a challenge the manager needs to overcome in the next few transfer windows if we're going to go from alsorans, to CL, to titles and European Cup wins.

Sahin would be a bloody good start. A great first rung on the ladder.

Without RVP Arsenal wont be in the title race. Their main attraction is CL when you compare the two teams.

We need more depth, and quality at that. A run in the Europa League could result in 19 games...

They've definitely added that bit of depth and experience they've been lacking, whether that makes them become more than the sum of their parts remains to be seen. I still get the feeling they'll do what they always do, either hit the ground running and fade, or the reverse, take a while to settle and then hit top gear. They'll be there or there abouts as always.

Title race is City, United, Chelsea, Champions League race is Us, Arsenal and Spurs, Arsenal being the favourites imo.

Why? They still have issues with their FBs (Sagna has slipped, and the Brazilian chap and Gibbs are not great defenders), lack a strong CB partner for Vermalean, will lose Song (their best midfielder last year I feel) and will rely on Giroud/Podolski to replace 35 odd goals from RvP (whom I think is gone). That's asking a lot ... I think they'll finish top 4 but yet again, not enough steel to push through (maybe Wilshere changes this if he comes back) ...

I concur but my gut tells me Chelsea may really struggle - they probably won't, but I just can't see them having an easy time with an error prone GK, two error prone CBs (Terry & Luiz) and a their attacking talent being protect by Mikel (who is decent at best). I think it's a Manchester title again ... Whether Shitty or Manure, too close to call currently.

You make a good point about Chelsea, there defence will cost them a few points, I still think they'll be up there, their forwards will be Oscar, Hazard, Marin and Torres, thats fantastic.

Alex Ferguson's inability to see the weakness in the teams centre as well as ageing, injury prone central defence with no decent backup will also cost them.

Marin and Oscar don't score goals. Hazard & Torres are both 15-20 goals/season (Torres - bar a few seasons with us). If they all play at their best, they'll be amazing but I think they'll struggle especially if RdM goes for a more defensive approach as he did for his two cup runs.

As for your Manure analysis - I've given up trying to predict their demise. Not worth the hope.

Right Oh! Just been told Nuri Sahin to Arsenal is DONE barring the paperwork. 1 year loan deal with option to buy after the loan.

Geoff is pretty accurate , so pretty confident this could come to fruition.

According to one of the most reliable spanish Insiders at AS

Nuri Sahin se hace mucho. Sahin al Arsenal. Un préstamo a un año + £ 12 millones opción de compra.
Nuri Sahin deal is done. 1 year loan + £12 million buyout option.

A loan plus 12m option sounds perfect.

Taking highly rated players who didn't catch on with Madrid is always a good risk to take
