The real tragedy here is Athens missed opportunity to name this thread :
“Diego Mara-goner”.

Wonderful player - apart from the usual highlights, the 2 lasting memories I have of him are :

- ‘82 World Cup - getting red carded against Brazil for kicking a Brazilian player in the balls

- ‘94 World Cup - scoring a cracking goal and running to the camera going nuts with the wildest craziest eyes ever - shortly before getting sent home for cocaine use - fair chance he was off his tits while playing.
I was in a rush to post it before someone else beat me to it.

For me. He is the GOAT I saw.

Never saw the likes of Pele and Best so I can't comment.

Matadona to me was the equivalent of Ronaldinho and Suarez rolled in to one player.

As good as Messi and CR7 are they didn't get to that level.

The R9 had potential to get there but injuries ended him.

Long before the internet, that goal was on Encarta 95 complete with his own encyclopedia entry. It put him on the same footing as the world wars, the big bang, and the extinction of dinosaurs as something of absolute historical importance, at least it seemed that way in the undamaged mind of a young dantes.

Not the greatest of them all for my money (George Best gets that accolade) but unquestionably in the top half-dozen ever.

Diego Maradona RIP.

You've completely rendered your point redundant by saying CR7 and R9

He was before my time so can't really comment. Obviously one of the best ever. But the best I've ever seen is Messi.

But anyway, RIP. Probably went out the way he wanted to.

I am quite sure this is fake, but funny nonetheless. Maradona on Shilton

I watched the Liverpool game last night, I seen the players with the black armbands honour Maradonas's passing before the game and then take a knee to show support for the expulsion of racism. ......Then I remembered that last time I seen or heard of him mentioned in the media, at the world cup in 2018. Argentina v Nigeria and he was giving the African lads the finger.......

And that includes those 3 idiots who took selfies at the funeral.

Pretty much described the general state of our self-centred society today didn’t he Klopp ?

If you didn't watch the first five mins of that documentary with the Todd Terje soundtrack and not instantly want to take a load of pingers, steal a ford fiesta xr2i and drive it until you couldn't see and crashed it into a load of bins, then frankly you're an idiot, a prude, and we're never gonna get along

Klopp on Maradona: "If we had shown love for him without wanting a selfie and shown him the respect he deserved while he was alive, we could have helped him."

I love Klopp but thats sanctimonious nonsense, considering he grew up, became famous and self combusted in a time long before social media its hard to blame the empty selfie culture for Maradonas downfall. He was afforded more chances at redemption than most people and the goodwill people had towards him lasted far beyond his playing career, like George Best his pschology and upbringing left him incapable of dealing with the issues he encountered throughout his life.

The opening of that documentary is class, I assumed the music was older until I looked it up.

I've watched hours of Maradona videos over the last week. Today's so called "flair" players are plodding pansies compared to him. It's ruining me. Oh, and every single tackle on him would have been a yellow and many red. I'm coming to believe he is the greatest ever.

1986 World Cup, 37 minutes of his highlights.

Fuck. I've always wanted to be friends with a brewery owner.

And you wonder why some posters question your intelligence...

And you wonder why some posters question your intelligence...

Imagine solving the hardest problem in physics, and then solving the hardest problem in finance, problems so hard that the rest of the world is forced to brush them off as impossible dreams beyond our understanding, imagine doing those things and then dreamy of all people steps up to question your intelligence. You're damn right I have to wonder.
