gotta say i wasn't conflicted at all. all other hatreds are as nothing compared to my absolute hatred of utd. in the grand scheme of things i honestly couldn't give a fuck about chelsea or Torres.

This is how I feel as well.

Yes

I always avoid the game and say a little prayer for a mass brawl with severe bannings and hopefully a few injuries.

Never happens though 🙁
I was watching on TV when the Mancs got into a brawl with Arse some years ago; forgot when it was but it wasnt the pizza one.

I always hope it'll happen again with some injuries and many red cards for both.

Was it this one?

I quite like Martin Keown

Yeah that must have been about 89/90/91 ish. They both had points deducted.
yeah, that was one of my earliest memories of football, people talking about that points deduction. i'd go for 1990 cos arsenal won the title the other 2 seasons.

Thanks, SG.

Was it that long ago? 🙁

GUess I'm getting longer in the tooth than I realized.

It would make sense though; I didnt hate the Mancs so much then and I found the whole thing quite funny instead of hoping for fatalities.

Dennis Irwin always seemed so unflappable in those days so seeing him go mental was hilarious.

1990

Arsenal and United penalised for brawl
Arsenal were deducted two points and Manchester United were deducted one point after a brawl between players on both sides in an October fixture at Old Trafford. But the blow didn't have much damage on either team, as Arsenal went on to win the league title and Manchester United won the Cup Winners Cup.

They should start deducting points again for teams being cunts.

Is that all Torres ever was? A mirage? A rich man's Darren Bent?
I genuinely believe he's physically fucked.

And his attitude doesn't help him either.
Yes, I am starting to believe the rumours that we delayed the transfer so long that Chelsea had to rush the medical, and missed how bad the knee was

He is half a yard slower than before the injury last year, and that half yard makes the difference
I agree to a point. I think his attitude (or lack of one) is more of a factor. To Jonathan Wilson's point in that guardian piece, alan Shearer struggled after he came back from injury - but for pace alone, not for goals.

Fernando's worst injury is headuparse-itis.
If I was a Chelsea supporter I would be as worried about Esssiens form as much as any of them. The injuries he's had over the last few years have made him a shadow of the player he was.
He's a better player when Mikel plays. As is Lampard.

The Guardian article makes for interesting reading although I'm not as convinced the arrival of Torres forces Chelsea's hand as much as is being suggested.

It's been recognized for a while now that the likes of Anelka, Drogba, Lampard et al aren't quite producing performances with the same level of consistency as recent seasons. There may be some mitigating factors contributing to such a downturn after winning the title last year, however it's clear the 'old guard' need phasing out with a clear plan for the future.

In terms of the way the team is set up, there was never going to be a like for like replacement for Drogba - not a ready made one anyway. They were always going to have to change their style to an extent. Arguably buying someone that has at least proven he is able to play as a lone striker effectively mitigates the risk of transition.

So Torres may or may not end up being the wrong choice, but they were always going to have to adapt their style of play going forward and they were always going to have to spend money on the squad.
Yup agreed. I think that 'rebuilding' work shows in the work they've done in the transfer window in trying to bring in younger players.

In Ramires, Luiz, and Torres they've got younger talent and 2 out of 3 so far aint that bad.
He's been absolute gash so far this season - but first half against the mancs he looked like Kaka at Istanbul. He can clearly take the ball forward when given the space and the mancs were leaving a paddock between their midfield and the defence for the last half hour of the first half. They needed to make something happen then cause it was always going to get closed down after the break.
No he hasn't mate. He was slow to adapt and integrate, which isn't abnormal. Over the last few months he's been their best player, and he's still playing out of position.
Drogba's been there best player this season - and by some distance too.

Ramirez was turgid for the first half of the season mate. He seemed to pick up the pace of the game a lot better after that but he's pulled out of so many challenges it'd be no surprise to find him suffering whiplash. Ivanovich and Drogba have been well ahead of him in form and its been the injuries to Lampard and Essien in midfield which have made Ramirez look a little better by comparison IMO.

He hasn't been all that by any means this season - but, then, he has been significantly better than Lucas was in his first season. :-\

I've never hated any team as much as the mancs - not even the bitters except for a very brief period in the mid 80's.

I have to say, however, that I'm with Vlad. I couldn't even bring myself to cheer when Drogba pulled one back. They symbolize pretty much everything that is wrong with football (though city are likely to usurp that crown) and the fact Torres is there just makes them even more despicable.

I don't think they can beat Barca - though, as Keni says, it is a one off game and players like Rooney, Giggs, Hernandes etc could make something happen.

It's strange - the idea of the mancs winning at Wembley is the worst nightmare I can envisage but I still hated that plastic team from London with their 50m pound lying prick enough to find myself nervous when Drogba pulled one back.

With that nightmare still in my mind, however, does anyone else think that if the mancs did, somehow, do the treble this season that Ferguson would retire? Surely there's nothing left for the old goat to achieve. Number 19 etc.

While I fully respect that, I simply can't go along with it. Nothing and no team could ever supplant despising ManUre for me, though the blueslime have come close with that "murderers" sh!te and their pathetic bigging up of the Mancs just to get at us. I wanted Chavski to win and I was sickened when Park got the third shortly after Dogbreath pulled one back.

A definite "no" to the question whether Ferguson will go in the event of them winning the treble (Heaven forbid). I just don't think he's mentally and emotionally ready to do so and, as a close student of Shanks and the way Shanks did things, he'll have seen what a mistake (in personal terms anyway) Shanks made in going too soon. Last but not least, I suspect Ferguson would want a fifth CL if he can get it.

All in all I think the old goat will be around for a while yet. My hope is that things will begin to curdle under him as they did under Clough when he stuck around too long, and that Ferguson then does a Busby and casts an overlong shadow on whoever tries to succeed him. Won't be holding my breath waiting though.

A lot of threads I've read on here lately have us slipping into 'lower team syndrome' i.e. bitter and jealous.

This one is massive.

What the fuck? Are we supposed to be like some sort of zen fucking gandhi football fans? If you're not jealous of clubs in the QFs of the Champions League then there's something wrong with you. And if you're not angry or bitter about Torres leaving then please PM me with your wife/girlfriend's phone number.

I thought about that 5th CL while I was writing the post. If they somehow won it this season - won't happen - that would be 4. If he wants 5 then I think he wants 6. He wouldn't be satisfied with simply equalling us so it would have to be 6. That could mean another 5 to 10 years and I don't think he's ready for that kind of commitment.

I do admit he doesn't look ready to go just yet though - probably more wishful than rational thinking on my part.

Is it really all about beating Liverpool?

He's been at Utd for so long now, it's his home and it's what he does.

If he were to quit, what would he do with his days? Probably wish he'd never quit. I'm guessing he realized this a few years back.
