Manure (A) - Post Game thoughts

In contrast to Tuesday night, I thought Rodgers' team selection was a brave one although there was always the downside that the players weren't experienced in playing that formation. With wisdom of hindsight, it was expecting too much of Sterling to play him up front. I think it might have been better to rest Sterling and give Borini a game - as a proper striker he might have made more of the many chances we had.

I disagree. Omitting Lucas (who has not had a bad game since back in the side and has offered obvious balance) for an away game against Utd was ridiculous.

I can't help but think the selection and tactics were desperate but ill thought out gambles to shake things up a little because nothing else seems to be working.
And yet they could and should have worked judging by all the stats except the one that matters ?

Lucas would have been a risk, because he would have been likely to concede free kicks in dangerous positions with his inept fouls.

As opposed to the complete lack of tackles from our midfield?

I'd rather have started Lucas then Gerrard. And I cant stand Lucas.

What happened to Can? Plays well for a few games and then benched.
Allen should be benched and give Can a go.

Jones - 6.5 - first start in the PL for 21 months, he did nothing wrong, was calm and deserves to start at Bournemouth and (if he does OK again) against Arsenal.
Moreno - 3 - abysmal. Defend first. He was nowhere for their first two goals.
Lovren - 6 - could have had a 7 bar that atrocious effort for their third.
Skrtel - 7 - had his best game in a while and must be wondering how on earth they scored 3 goals .. or one even.
Johnson - 6 - pretty innocuous display until injured.
Gerrard - 6 - not involved that much but I think that has more to do with how 'toothless' United appeared for most of the match, or maybe that is how he made them appear. Anyway hardly noticed him.
Allen - 3 - fuck off. Goddamn awful performance.
Henderson - 5 - waste of space for most of the match but two glorious passes could and should have led to something.
Coutinho - 7 - started off poorly but got better and better. He was waltzing through their midfield most of the time and can count himself unlucky that nothing came off because he was far more controlled than of late.
Lallana - 7.5 - he was the most creative player on the pitch, set Sterling up superbly. Ran his guts out closing them down and winning back possession by forcing errors. Our MoM just for those 45 mins. Sad he was removed - it had better be because of his ribs otherwise Rodgers has a lot to answer for.
Sterling - ? - I'm really not sure whether to nail him with a 4 for all the misses or consider that he did well to get himself into those positions in the first place and give him a 7.5.

Balotelli - 6 - another like Sterling. Do you berate him for those inane attempts from 40 yds out or say he was unlucky , or should have done better, with those two efforts De Gea saved ?
Markovic - 6.5 - nice run and superb defence splitting pass near the end. Shouldn't have been expected to play wing-back, because he isn't one. Deserves a start.

BR - 7 if taking Lallana off was a forced move, a 5 if it wasn't.

No he wouldn't, Ricky gets a lot of good treatment

Balos face doesn't fit, so he's the target.

Probably because he has failed to score a goal for us in the league for us....

Obviously being back from injury we shouldn't expect him to be razor sharp though still should put away one of his chances...

I think today showed Brendan is still scared to drop Gerrard for the big games, Lucas would have contributed more imo. I also feel really sorry for Sterling, he's our stand out player and he's too young to be the one guy we rely upon.

Thought we played alright though, some lapses, a lack of finishing and individual errors aside.

When's Sturridge back?

Minute 82 ... and then I thought, better a new thread in honor of Rosco.

That being said, a world class goalie wouldn't have made a difference today ... We lost because we couldn't put the ball in the net ... We're far off, but the premier league is weak this season, and we could easily still do something if the team puts in the type of attacking performance it did today ...

In order to appease Modo and Ninja'man, maybe we should get Rafa as a defensive coach?

He wouldn't never work in the current (transfer committe) structure and would end up in tears again.....

I find it amazing that nobody ever has a problem with just how shit our fullbacks are at defending / how little defending they do.

It never gets a mention, it's the single biggest problem in the team.

Your right Ross - I've never seen a thread on here criticising the likes of Glen Johnson or Luis Enrique for their defending.

Never.

Ever.

Not once.

Moreno was better than a 3. We had two players on Valencia and Coutinho didnt track Rooneys run.
On the second he kept the line cause Mata was offside.
I thought he was quite good in the 2nd half and was shocked he was subbed with Markovic tbh.

He's a very very inconsistent finisher - I don't know if that can ever improve.

Inconsistant?! He couldn't finish his fucking dinner. Half the posts in the pre match thread wanted him up top! He's utterly bollocks infront of goal, it just looks foreign to him like he's really surprised he's got there.
He's brilliant and getting into the box, doing his magic out wide, cutting in and beating a man. He needs to learn, and sharpish, when to call it a day and hand the ball off to someone capable infront of goal, because it's not him. I've seen defenders with more composure infront of goal than Sterling. Could be a brilliant player, but it doesn't look like goals are going to be part of it.

I agree. He's very consistent in being poor in front of goal...

Watch the replays - he didn't even SEE Mata !

I was not at all surprised he was subbed. He was losing possession, firing in shots from 40 yds out and nothing was happening for him. He was shite.

I still haven't seen one about Moreno. Despite his numerous fuck ups.

Or the other useless Spanish one

As much I think Mignolet is garbage, you don't change keepers against Utd away. It's like Rodgers is trying anything hoping he'll get lucky with personnel or a system.

I'm not gonna blame him for an offside goal. As I said he was decent in the 2nd half. His pace bailed us out several times at the back.

Maybe that's because sane people afford the younger players a little bit more leeway when it comes to mistakes - particularly when they're, you know, new to the club/league/country.
