Manchester United v Liverpool Match Thread

Haha, yeah. One guy I regularly bump into at the gym who's a Manc fan was giving it large this morning. You'd have thought they'd won the Cup Final.

Come to think of it though, that probably *was* this season's Cup Final for them.

They have another cup final next week against Norwich.

A real relegation "6 pointer". He should be saving his energy for that.

Maybe, but I think it's also very clear that Klopp has a preferred default formation and a preferred midfield type of player.
And Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner and Fabinho are it

I don't think so. I just don't think anyone else has given him much choice.

Oh absolutely, and I think Klopp knows it (hence buying Keita, Ox and trying to buy Fekir).

But I also think that it doesn't take much for him to think "nope" and revert to type, if anyone doesn't do the required hard yards and defensive work, or the formation looks a bit too loose.

Yes I agree.

But he's spennt nearly 100m on 2 players who are capable of doing hard yards (Ox was doing it before his injury and Keita at Leipzig was compared to Kante for his running ability) as well as doing some of the cute technical things.

It's just strange that he hasn't integrated them better into the side and is persisting with the workhorses, each and every ga,e. We've literally been grinding out results for some time now. I can't remember a 3 game consecutive spell where I can say we've played great throughout.

Klopp has tried Shaqiri in that midfield too but Klopp wasn't convinced that was a good way to go.

I think that being injured for an entire year probably damaged Oxlade-Chamberlain's integration, and it's only fair to take into account Keita's multitude of injuries and illnesses too, unremarkable as some of his displays have been since he joined.

On Shaqiri, he really should be the go to person when one of the front 3 are out, especially Mo, as their workrate aren't too dissimilar and he plays best off the right wing.

And whilst he lacks the directness/goals of Mo, he does probably have a better pass and delivery.

Plus he's just a better all round footballer than Origi (who has been shown to be a good supersub).

WTF has happened to Shaq? Where has he gone?

Injured and also out of favour before that.

Anyway, don't worry, if Grealish has a good game against us and/or City, the threads claiming we should spend £75m on him will start in earnest.

I think Shaquiri would have been brought on earlier than usual yesterday if fit for selection. However we got what we looked for in Lallana. A cool head capable of holding on to the ball better. Keita was more helped by the timing and that United was flat dead at the moment.

What worried me about Ox was that his attempts for elever passes went straight out to goalkick a few times from unpressed positions

Yeah true. I guess I hoped that Ox would be brought back; he's had a full pre-season. And whilst he was woeful in the Super cup final, Jordan/Gini have had poor games themselves and still been selected the following week.

Keita, we haven't seen the best of yet. Last year he started well for 2-3 games then faded badly. When he came back in later, his form started to pick up again, but then he got injured again. He's shown us glimpses, but nothing concrete or consistent. But I think that will only come with a run of games (some of which will be poor), and it feels like it will be difficult for him to get that time, with us chasing everything and some of Klopp's more trusted generals playing in that same area. He can't afford to be a little better than Hendo/Milner on the ball, he needs to be so much better than all these guys to get a game, because of the leadership qualities and positional awareness they bring.

Right now, he's not. And it's a shame, as we all were sold a dream with him; Klopp courted him for so long.

Hopefully, Sunday has shown his bench is too weak, and he needs to spend in Jan to keep a title challenge going.

While this may be true, I'm not sure a game in which the use of the bench rescued us a point, with an equaliser scored by a player off the bench, is the best thread in which to talk about it. It seems almost wilfully retarded, in fact.

I was about to say the same thing. If anything, the match probably pointed to the lack of contribution from the muddling three in midfield than a lack of quality from the bench. Liverpool looked better when we switched shape and personnel.

I think Klopp, once again, played the fixture rather than the team.

I think he'd have almost certainly played Chamberlain or Keita in midfield from the start if that was a mid table side with the name of Burnley or something, instead of a mid table side named man utd, as Hendo has been poor relatively speaking & keeps getting dragged off with half an hour to go.

I fully expect Keita to play against Genk & get a fair few games in the next month or so, hopefully he can back into the form he started to show before his latest injury, cos we really fucking need it, esp if Salah is missing for long. Although if Chamberlain rises to the occasion, we could see him getting that chance instead.

I think that Ox might have been given a start if he didn't put in such a shit showing against MK Dons. That riled me as he clearly felt that game was beneath him rather than taking it as an opportunity to outshine everyone else on the pitch.

Salah had better not be missing for long, because we can't afford to lose his quality, pace and goals from the team.

As for the team, it's certainly true that Henderson's form has been....er..."patchy" to say the least, but I'm fairly sure that the team he played is pretty close to Klopp's preferred best XI (Salah/ Gomez aside), and he plays that team and formation in almost all of the key tricky fixtures.

And also played the same team against Burnley.

I don't get that vibe from Chamberlain, it's possible he was just really shit.

I think Klopp doesn't like losing and thus picks teams that don't. Even if that means grinding out results.
I'm happy with that, it's how to win leagues.
We've just won 17 league games on the bounce then drawn at Old Trafford, we haven't lost at home in the league for years, we've lost one league game in God knows how long and we are European Champions, all done with a midfield that admitadly isnt the most creative but works hard and tackles hard. It's a midfield that tires out the opposition. Grinds then into the dust. The last 20 minutes is the time to bring on the creative players if needed. When the opposition is knackered, the games streched and there's space for them to exploit.
No disrespect to the three subs who came on yesterday but if any of them had started, then the chances of us losing that game rise dramatically.

The one recommendation for living in Wallasey is that you get a great view of Liverpool.

😉
Another is it was dirt cheap and close to the bowling alley (I was banging the girl who worked there and lived close by). Oh sweet memories 😀
But you do know Wallasey Village isn't Wallasey don't you 😉

Well it is, it's in Wallasey so is Wallasey. It's not all of Wallasey though
