Mahrez

I quite like the idea of it.

Graeme Kelly has suggested it's Mahrez now & Lemar in the summer with the money. That sounds pretty good to me, but not sure how reliable he is deemed.

I think he's work rate is underrated. He's perceived to be lazy. You do not win the league playing 4-4-2, when one of your wide midfielders in lazy.

Equally he's playing for Leicester, who have a brand of football which is often to sit deep and then counter attack. He could look totally different in our brand of football which is more about pressing higher up the field. He's got plenty of energy, I seem to remember we had similar questions about Mane before he arrived. "Does he only do it in purple patches", "Southampton had issues with his attitude" etc etc.

Klopp has improved the productivity of Firmino, Mane, Salah and Coutinho himself.

Since the start of 2015/16 season Coutinho has been involved in 46 goals for LFC (goals / assists). Mahrez has been involved in 44 (51 if you include pens).

So if Klopp can enhance Mahrez's game, improving his stats like he has with the others, then we'd be laughing.

Equally, over the last few weeks we have seen Salah play much more central. The team has looked like a 4-4-2 / 4-2-2-2 fluid formation. It makes sense having Salah central, as he's such a huge goal threat and he's closer to the goal. So Mane can be left, Mahrez on the right, Firmino buzz around all over the place like usual. Until hopefully Lemar arrived in the summer and then we have more depth, options and food for thought / hopefully a nice problem to have.

Klopp has got his attacking signings spot on so far. I wouldn't bet against him having Mahrez thriving at LFC just like the others have. He improves these attacking players and I think his work rate without the ball is much better than perceived.

Mahrez's stats are impressive and he can be the flashiest of wingers, but isn't he also one of those cunts who downed tools after things got sour with Ranieri?

That's like saying we wouldn't want Hazard because he had a poor season when Mourinho got sacked at Chelsea.

Think Mahrez has shown this season, even when he didn't get his move in the summer, like Coutinho he'll knuckle down and perform.

He's got a similar about of goals / assists to Coutinho this season. Frightening to think what he could do in this LFC team and attack.

If we are losing Coutinho now then in terms of the rest of the season he wouldn't be the worst addition but I'm still not convinced.

I can't believe we are letting him go now when we have a real shot at a deep run in the CL.

Around 0.75 tackles per match (this season) and 0.75 interceptions ... and one block all season. Defensive minded he isn't. But then you don't buy Mahrez for his defending do you, same as we persist with Coutinho when his defensive input is crap.

I like Mahraz and wouldn't be disappointed if we signed him. He's quality.

He couldn't replace Coutinho alone, but if he's signed with Lemar then I reckon we have a stronger squad as a whole.

So lose Coutinho & Can for £140m.

Gain Keita, Mahrez and Lemar for £190m.

Still think that leaves us a CM short, especially with Milner's age and Henderson's injury/ability issues.

I think Mahrez would be a step down from Coutinho. Yes, he is great in decisive episodes in the final third, the last pass or shot, but he doesn’t give you much beyond that, he doesn’t control the build-up play in midfield the way Phil does (or Lemar does also). Mahrez might replace Coutinho’s goals and assists, but we will still lose something intangible.

Besides, out of the current “fab 4,” Phil is (was?) the deepest-lying player, he is the only one who isn’t capable of playing as a striker. Mahrez is closer to the Salah type and often plays in the front 2 with Vardy; if our task is finding a like-for-like replacement for Coutinho it should be a winger/playmaker, not a winger-forward.

Ok, hypothetically and in reality, countino leaves. Who brings this ethereal intangible bullshit back to the field? Specifically this nebulous facet?

Lemar.

And it’s not all that ethereal, it’s called passing game.

Nah. He's nowhere near as good as Mahrez

He didn’t have a season like Mahrez 2015-16 yet, that’s true. But obviously he’s 4-5 years younger and potentially a better player IMO. I share @Rosco ’s concern about buying 26+ wingers, there is too much negative precedent, including our own recent history.

He's a winger like our wingers. He doesn't and never has beaten people for pace on the touchline. He doesn't get chalk on his boots. He's an AM who would slot into our team tomorrow.

Only in the attacking half, the rest will still be paper thin
Wel Keita may be a B2B CM but he will have the best defensive stats in the whole team bar none (except heading) so he's a big upgrade defensively too for our midfield.

We definitely need someone with that unpredictability who can unlock teams, so Mahrez seems the obvious choice. Though at £50m for a 26 year old, we'd be pinning our hopes on him not hitting a steady decline two years down the line.

The main issue is replacing Coutinho with another player who can conjure up a bit of magic, so I suppose it makes sense. No amount of pass and move or an extra winger could replace that quality, in any shape or form. We've seen this team pass the opposition to death and still not win.

At the minute we need a 35 year old keeper. Two thirty year old centre halves. A 28 year old DM. Youth is not what we need to kick on
