But Reds defender Glen Johnson has paved the way for a possible move to Real Madrid from Liverpool in January by taking Spanish lessons.

Around this time last year he was labelled the best in the world on some thread in here. Blimey.
[/quote]

he is being played in a way that negates his strengths and exposes his weaknesses. johnson would flourish in a better system.

They were wrong. He's not a very good defender at all.

I'm with Neil. I can't see Real signing him anyway to be honest.

Even if they did, they will make a bid by hugely undervaluing the player, and act as though they are doing us a favor....

I hate the two big spanish clubs.....cunts.

He's shown flashes of brilliance, but overall, I would say he's been a major disappointment.

Worth nowhere near 18m either.

12m tops

That's a bit generous though; basically he needs to play in attack because he's an 18 million shit defender.

Exactly. Neil in 'defending the attack minded defender shocker'.

He's a shit defender and once again he's being found out for it.

I think id rather have a solid defender who can actually defend. Arbeloa was miles better than him, and he is not exactly world class.

Johnson was terrible for Chelsea, I always thought teams would be able to get at them when he started. I didnt pay much attention to him at Portsmouth, but did he really improve all that much? Even with Rafa drilling him he was still suspect, hes only going to get worse now. He has not learnt for himself so far.

Hes obviously got talent, so unless hes going to play right midfield, id bin him off as a liability... If we could get 12 million for him, id take it and sign someone who understands how to defend.

Oh, and why the fuck would Real want Johnson when they already have 2 better right backs in Sergio Ramos and Arbeloa himself.....

Its just paper crap once again.

He.....can't....cross

What winger is any use if they can't cross?

the bottom line is, if liverpool were a team that held a higher line and pressed the opposition more johnnson would be spending more time in the opposition half where his attacking ability would shine, and less time in our half where is defensive ability is being exploited.

roy has often been fielding two holding midfielders but because were defending so deep and conceeding most of the possession the defenders are being tested time and time again needlessly, even the likes of carra are looking dubious.

This is a decent point Spidey.

I have to say I kinda agree with Neil.

Whilst Johnsons form is poor we are playing in the exact setup which exposes his weakness.

spide does make a good point however no matter how defensive we play, when johnson does attack we're not seeing enough return for our money. His shootings poor and he can't cross. Yes he runs at defenders and is one of the few who does, but without end product what's the point

look at agger, a defensive sound center back (imho) was made to look an utter cunt by adam johnson as he (agger) was defending on the edge of the 18 yard box and AJ was giving free reign to run at him time and time again, pushing up and out would have pushed AJ and man city away from our goal it also would have pushed the defenders closer to the midfielders meaning it would have been easier to give agger a hand.

I'm having a hard time being too critical of any of attacking players in our current set up, even the world class torres is being made to look decidedly ordinary.

When Johnson skinned Agger they weren't 'one on one', there were players around to cover and who should have covered. I love the way you try to paper over defenders shortcomings (especially more attack minded ones) by slating the fact that they were asked to defend in the first place!

There will come times for any team when they are forced deep and when defenders need to defend, even if it is in our own box or wherever, it's the nature of defending. So while the 'higher line' comment is a fair point, it shouldn't be one that's used paper over their vulnerabilities, especially when these defenders vulnerabilities are shown essentially when they are asked to defend.

Yes as a team we could keep the ball better and then that would promote the more attacking instincts of the likes of Agger and Johnson, but it's not as clear cut as you make out, for a start, Agger for one is not exactly quick, so keeping a high line is at the risk of relying on the offside trap and being vulnerable to the counter attack, that's when he 'will' find himself in one on one situations and being left for dead.

Essentially we need to start keeping the ball better as a team, taking the pressure off the defence, and we need to buy a commanding centre back.

If we recouped 90% of the dollar spent on him I'd be happy enough.

I've lost count of the amount of times tele pundits have lauded him our most potent attacking force, I think I agreed on one occasion..

Defensively he's been whack.the only way is up, I suppose.

Cheers Peter.

So as expected then this story is just probably more BS.

What?

I think Magic's a very talented player who is in a terrible rut of form. Selling him would be nuts because he's one of the few players we've got who can actually run with the ball and create chances. I do think he needs a kick up the arse though, or a change of position. You can't keep picking him as a RB when he's been (this season) such a constant liability there. Particularly when Kelly has looked very solid and deserves a chance.

So either push Magic up and play him on the wing, or put him on the bench and tell him he needs to improve if he wants to win his place back. Neil's right about our 'system' though: it's definitely not helping.
