Lyon have announced that star striker Karim Benzema is to become the latest player to join Real Madrid.

The French forward had been linked with Manchester United, but big-spending Real - who have already captured Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo in record deals - have won the race.

The transfer will be worth in the region of £30million as new Bernabeu president Florentino Perez continues to build a new era of 'galacticos'.

A statement on the French club's official website said: "Lyon announces the agreement with Real Madrid of the transfer of international attacker Karim Benzema for a net minimum value of €35m."

slur alex won't be happy...

They are fooked for targets now.... unless they can pull a rabbit out of the hat and get Villa against his will....

Madrid on the other hand are going to be some force next season...

Do you think Barca angered them with their clean sweep last season?!?
and the fact we embarrassed them in 'their own competition', hammering them 4-0...

I'd say both had a lot to do with it...

waking up and smelling the coffee.. and going ooh its smells like shit, I guess!

The only 2 remaining big name targets are Aguero and Eto'o, with Eto'o being the more likelier especially if Barca sign Villa. United could just match Citeh's bid for Eto'o, and offer him 100k a week. He'd be more likely to go there (as if he went to Citeh he'd be seen as a money grabbing mercenary).

United fans will have to put the vaseline back in the top draw for now, but I can't see them NOT spending big before the summer is out, even if it's just a desperate transfer for someone.

Kaka, Ronaldo, Benzema.

We won't beat them 5-0 again that's for sure.

Probably 5-4 though - their defence remains the same pretty much.

As long as UTD don't get Ribéry, I don't give a fuck who they get upfront now as I can't see them getting Eto'o.

And they still have about £84m to spend this summer, don't they. Means they aren't likely to relent in their pursuit of Xabi.

>🙁

Hm? where did that number come from? There's no way they are going to spend £250 million in one summer. I would be amazed if another big signing comes off after Benzema.

I thought Man Utd had a transfer strategy linked to future profit that bans Fergie from signing anyone 26 or over? Would rule Eto'o out.

They could go for Ibrahimovic or DeRossi, Huntelaar, Silva, Ribery, Pato....theres loads of big players they could go after. In particular with 70m burning a hole.
I wouldnt start crowing just yet, they could easily go out and fuck our summer up.

Fallon, I think that's rather naive when talking about Madrid, they're clearly going all out Galatico, maybe it's a nostalgia thing on their part but they're clearly willing to spend and who would bet they've reached their limit?

I agree with you Oncy, to the extent that it is too early to start crowing.
But considering Benzema's age and ability, this is great news for us.
None of the players you mentioned, or strikers currently at United will come close to replacing Ronaldo's golas.

Half of those players mentioned I don't rate highly.. and not all of them are forwards.

Pato - looks very unlikely to go anywhere this summer given the fact that Chelsea have had bids circa 50m turned down already. West London also be his first choice destination should he decide to leave Milan given his relationship with Ancelotti.

Huntelaar - great goalscorer, but slow as hell and contributes next to nothing to build up play. Not very versatile or mobile and if they bought him, they'd only have to sacrifice Rooney on the wing, or put Berbatov on the bench.

Ibrahimovic - they'd have to pay 68m for him. Talented player, no doubt, but 68m!? Oh, what a waste that would be. I doubt this fella would even cross Fergie's mind. First of all, he's not the kind of forward they need. Besides, he's a guy with an ego that rivals Ronaldo's, whose workrate rivals Berbatov's and whose goal record in big match occasions rivals Pepe (Reina, that is).

Ribery/Silva - Neither are centre forwards (which is what they're after), but i'll play along. Silva i don't rate much and Ribery is unlikely to leave Bayern for anyone else but Madrid.

De Rossi - God I hope they sign him. Again, not a forward, and he's decent enough player with a great sounding name, but he's not better than what they have.

==

Ultimately, all i'm saying is, I think there are only 2 or 3 marquee centre forward signings who are 'possibly' available this summer and who could make an immediate impact.

Villa, Eto'o and Aguero. I think Eto'o is the most likely but if Fergie does indeed have a mandate from the board about not signing anyone over 26, then Aguero will be the obvious target on the list. 40m should be enough to get him. I just hope he prefers staying in Spain.

Their defence is improved with abilol and garay.

Yet again, let's see how mant Salford boys still claim to be bigger than Madrid

One of Perez's pre election promises was to spend 250 million Fallon.
Plenty of cash left in the pot.

Dear fucking god, in that case this has to stop. It's going to kill the game.

Well, I'm kinda sad he didn't come to us, but in the end that was never even mooted, so yeah, it's a relief that Ferguson won't get his hands on Benzema.

Having said that, he might well have become a better player at United. Real will let him get away with being lazy and unfit as long as he shows flashes of class and scores lots of goals.

I'm worried today, after this, that the ONE player I think could fill the hole left by rent-boy will now become the scum's number 1 target for the summer. And with so much money to spend, I don't see how they don't get him if they go after him now...

Oncy, your list is a valid one, but nobody on that list comes close to making up for the loss of rent-boy like Ribbery would.

Tru that. It isn't the players they buy that bother me, I think we are capable of beating any team in the world, but it's sick that any team can chuck that kind of money around in one summer. I didn't think I would ever do this, but.......Platini may have been talking sense for once recently.

Real Madrid (and Barce) have a special status as a 'society' club that allows them to do this. They also have the highest revenues in world football and a big TV deal which they're borrowing against, a 90k stadium, commercial revenues etc. and because of their status favourable terms from the Spanish banks.

What they're doing is actually affordable for them and Perez is following a specific strategy of buying up the most expensive players/stars and using them to grow the revenues, he says they're not spending they're investing. their debt is equivalent to the debt of Liverpool or Man Utd but unlike us or the Mancs nobody but the members own Real madrid so all the cash is going on players rather paying the interest on loans of leveraged buy out deals for the benefit of the shareholders.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems united have already lined someonw up in place of benzema.

A stockport county fan has just told me one of their chaps called Josh Thompson has gone on trial to united for a week.

Ignore the above, he (like Benzema) has turned United down apparently. This time in favour of Peterborough.

Hehe! but remember who the manager of Peterborough is though.

-------Benzema
Ronaldo------Kaka

That is some front 3!
I don't think that's how they'll play. Ribery has said he wants to join Benzema at Real, so they'll line up with a front four like this:

Benzema

Ronaldo - Ribery

Kaka

You can see why they want to sign Xabi, can't you?

Fantasy football, eh...

City fans are probably raging on their boards right now "FLASH THE CASH HUGHES!!!!".
