Given the Carroll transfer (which admittedly was driven by time pressures and the immediate need to replace Torres), it's beyond the realms of possibility that we might bid large for the likes of Bale in the summer.

40m anyone?

all our transfer budget on one player? never in a million years but I'll bite

kelly----carra----agger-----johnson
gerrard---meireles---lucas----bale

actually a balanced team

Bale will never play for us. Ever. Besides, I wouldn't want to spend that much on a player who (i think) is still very much overrated

knowing our luck he'd be injuried in his debut game.

no thanks, would rather take our budget which I think will be roughly 50m (including sales) and buy 3 players, two of whom I should be wingers.

Ideally 20 mil profit and 20 mil from sales. Might be more dependant on what we qualify for or what we win

Why do people think we will have £50m to spend?
sales

cole
aqua
cuntchesky
poulsen
jove

15-20m (the bulk of this from aqua)

+

20-30m from turnover/profits

50m (or there abouts)

Johnson / Aurelio / Kelly / Wilson as LBs is fine by me and it would be good to put that money elsewhere :

1. Complete the signing of Young that we started in January.
2. Absolutely we need a powerful CB - is Mertesacker still available at the end of the season ?
3. A quality DM (Defour perhaps, bags of energy, creativity and passing).
4. A better striker than N'Gog (he can be young - no problem with that - however I'm not at all sold on the idea of Conor Wickham).
5. Adam - 5M - still an excellent CM to have in the squad.

I think we'll have 50M+ to spend.
If Young is the only winger we buy, i will be devastated.

He is over-rated beyond belief.

Not a bad call. I don't think we can any longer say: we won't get him, he's too expensive. If they're young and talented, we'll pay the market rates for them.

we don't have carte blanche, henry has said our spending will be linked to turnover espeically with the fair play rules kicking in.

Also the failed bids for Young and Adam seem to indicate Kenny wants more British players in the team. It would be a huge surprise if we got Bale though.

Have a feeling Bale will go to the Mancs in the summer as Giggs replacement for LM. Hes not coming to us...Maybe if we get Champions League football ahead of Spurs he might.

But then he is overated now, 40 million? He was so awesome in the 2 Inter Milan games, but I doubt if he could achieve that kind of impact throughout a whole season.

maybe he feels they (british players) will make more stomach for a fight in a winter cold freezing night at bolton. the winter usually being the time were our CL challenge disappears up our own arse.

Not carte blanche, but I wouldn't be surprised if they loaned the club money to rebuild this summer, thinking that they can then spend less money in future seasons. As a squad, we're a long way behind our rivals, and we need to catch up quickly if we're going to get back in the CL and thus maximise our revenues.

well if there was a time to do it, it's now. the squad does need an injection of quality in key areas.

That's probably one of the reasons, yes. I'm all for having a large British core in the team and I don't mind overpaying a bit for it either.

We already have a more than large enough British core.

The focus now should be on building a winning team/squad. Nationality shouldn't come in to it.

It certainly shouldn't be done at the expense of quality. If, however, we have to pay a couple of million extra for a British player of same quality than someone from the continent then I think it's a good idea at least in some cases.

I don't think it's a question of nationality so much as being PL-proven. That is, generally speaking, a big advantage, although Robbie Keane proved there are exceptions to the rule.

There are some exceptions to that rule of course - players of the class it's worth taking a punt on. Eden Hazard for example.

Yep although being English has the added bonus of meeting the home grown quotas and also lower chances of player becoming homesick or wanting to play for a club of his dreams in Spain/Italy/Germany.

This. A player's individual ability and personality are always the most important factors, but both of these are close behind IMO.

The second point is true, but not the first - as Bale and Adam aren't English.

Bale still qualifies as he has been at an English club long enough(at least 3 years) between the ages of 16 and 21.
Isn't Gareth Bale welsh?

So he automatically qualifies...no?
Actually yes.

So Bale it is then.

Right, who do we want as centre-back? I'll write a shopping list to send to Henry.
