Luis Suarez– I just can't get enough

Described by Tony Cascerino (not a fan but good quote regardless):
"Liverpool have a striker moulded from previous anfield forward legends; Rush's work rate, Fowler's finishing, Torres's power, Owen's speed and King's arse"

Having Suarez is like fucking Miss World.
Totally incredible (I hypothesize)
Don't go messing the whole thing up by thinking you are in a relationship.
Next thing you will be wondering if she can cook.
Enjoy the ride lads.
You ain't going to be married to her in thirty years time.

Among many magical moments on Sunday, there was that one where a ball was hit high up to him in their half and he took it down and killed it dead as he ran. It was incredible technique. He's an extraordinary player to watch whatever he does.

Hmmmm, that's a tough one actually. Worth a thread.

I'd only swap him for Ronaldo - Messi is a better player but I don't know if he'd do as well in a club that's not set up entirely to take advantage of his strengths.

On current form though of all 3, I'd take Suarez ...

Suarez has done it for a year and a half-ish? Messi's been outrageous for over half a decade.

I actually don't know who I'd choose, but there's no way I'd be discounting Messi that readily.

I just think Messi is more likely to struggle a) in a new league and b) in a system that doesn't take advantage of his skills (compare his games with Argentina, without an Alves on the flank etc, to Barca) ... He's the best player in the world - and I'm not discounting him, just think the way we're set up and what we do to be successful - Ronaldo and/or Suarez is best fit for the current system. I think we can count the few years at Ajax as doing it too - granted it's Holland, but he was the shit for those years too.

If we signed Messi, we'd change our system so it suited him, just like we change our system so it suits Suarez.

I don't think we significantly changed our system to suit Suarez. It's more of him adapting himself to our team and the league and is still doing so when necessary (e.g. playing on the wing when Sturridge joined).
We had indeed a system suited for Torres but at the time we had other players playing for us and a younger and better Gerrard playing behind Torres, which I think is the main difference to our current system. I think Suarez would have easily slotted into that system too.

With Messi, it's a totally different story. I'm not sure how he'd fit into our current system and personnel. Do we have the squad and system to bring the best out of him and have the same Messi Barca have? I'm not sure.

I'm not sure why I'm getting such comments to be honest. I'm not disputing his ability, just stating I find it hard to really like him.

Why's that such an issue?

I think for a lot of people it's a simple equation.

(E+G)>(R+B)

Where E = effort, G = goals, R = racist abuse, and B = biting.

I'm largely with you. I celebrate all of his goals because he is scoring for my team, but that doesn't excuse his behaviour.

I've met cunts who are great at their jobs before. They're still cunts.

The fact his team mates adore him means that you can't sum up his character with your reductive and crude R+B equation, and anyone who reduces it to this is a fucking moron. He has made mistakes due to his ferocious will to win, but that doesn't encapsulate his entire personality, does it? The likes of Ronaldo is clearly a cock who no-one really likes, including (especially?) his team mates – but Suarez is beloved of everyone in our team. Ronaldo wants all the glory, but Suarez also has a wonderful team ethic that is there for everyone to see. He and Lucas (who seems to be the nicest guy in the world) are bezzie mates. In short, I don't think Suarez is a cunt. He has done some cuntish things, granted, but those events do not represent his entire personality.

I know. Fred West only killed a few kids. All told he spent less a couple of weeks actually torturing and murdering people but people seem to want to pigeon hole him for this little pastime he had. He was a great guy to know if you had a leak in the bathroom or your light switch needed fixing.

West. Shipman. Both names of brands of tinned fish and fish-related products. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Rodgers has said a few times that we adapt our system to get the most out of Suarez.

If I was a manager I'd make out I was the reason player x was great too.

If I happened to manage him again a few years later when he wasn't as good, I'd say nothing.

You call it crude, but I genuinely think that's how it works for some people. Such is the fickle nature of fandom. I'm not saying that's how it is for everyone, but for some I think his behaviour is of little consequence as long as he's scoring goals. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of that kind of behaviour on here if you compare attitudes towards him in the summer with attitudes towards him just 6 months and 22 goals later.

I haven't forgotten how he behaved in the summer, or before that whilst representing this club. And I don't deny that there are endearing parts to his character. But Luis Suarez looks after himself, and will continue to do that. The minute he feels this club can't match his ambition, he'll be trying to manufacture a move again. If we miss out on the Champions League this season, he'll be pulling as many strings as he can to get out of here. I don't really blame him for that, but he's really not the sort of player I have genuine affection for.

Well, I guess I have to bring up the Gerrard example again.
Do you love Steven Gerrard.
You probably remember he was on the verge of leaving us twice. He also was taken to court for punching that DJ, right?

As @doctor_mac said - he has made mistakes. Everybody do at some stage.
If you could forgive Gerrard for his, I believe you can forgive Suarez for his.

And at the end of the day - he's a footballer who has his own ambitions when it comes to success on and off the field, and he might very well leave if we don't match his ambitions. If this happens after 3.5 or more years of first class service and for a fair price I don't think we can complain too much.

As far as I'm concerned, the two situations aren't even remotely comparable. I do not blame a footballer for having ambition. I could even forgive the underhanded means a player might use to try and further their ambition. However, I do draw the line at racial abuse and biting. I guess everyone has their limits.

Besides, I don't think anyone could deny what Stevie had already given to the club prior to considering his options, or indeed the general direction (certainly in terms of league form) we were heading at the time. Slightly different, I would suggest, to a player who tried to manufacture a move for himself after playing just two seasons for us, receiving a suspension for abhorrent behaviour in each of them, and despite the club standing by him through both incidents.

It stuck in the craw that Gerrard seemed so dazzled by Abramovich's billions. He was heading to a group of mercenaries rather than a football team.

Well, I guess each of us has his perspective on events and his limits.
I do see the situations as comparable. Not identical but definitely comparable.

Gerrard was about to leave for the first time in the summer of 2004. Almost 10 years ago. He was still very young (~23), with only 5 years of service, and before leading us to the CL and FA cup. Granted he wasn't suspended for a lengthy period, but that's another story (which has been done to death here). And BTW - Suarez had been here for 2.5 years when he manufactured his transfer.

As for the racist abuse + biting vs. punching of the DJ - the racist abuse is still in question for many, while I don't see biting of a fellow player at the heat of a football match as something worse that punching a person in a pub. Different limits again.
Good that you haven't brought up the diving thing, because Steven Gerrard has his own record there.

BTW, are you seeing Sakho as an anti-semite? is he a cunt?

Anyway, we'll probably have to agree to disagree.
I have forgiven both Gerrard and Suarez. I have not forgotten though how both were ready to jump ship.

No

He comes across as a cunt.

Good player in his day though

Yeah, SG comes across as a bit of a cunt, though I think he's grown more human over the years. Hands down Suarez would be a better mate. Mischievous fun and mexican beer to the soundtrack of Queen. Beats perpetual hand washing and mardiness to the soundtrack of Phil Collins.
