A huge match for us could be played without some of our biggest and most important players with Sterling, Coutinho, Sturridge, Lallana, Markovic and Lucas all either going to be unfit to start, needing to be fitness tested or coming back from injury. I'm going to be watching every LFC announcement over the next 36 hrs with far more than just a keen interest.
...............

Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho will both have fitness tests after limping off at Goodison while Lucas Leiva will undergo a scan on the thigh problem that forced him out just 16 minutes into the match.

“Phil Coutinho had a knock on his knee and Raheem had a knock on his foot. We had fresh players on the bench to bring on and hopefully they will be fit for Tuesday.” Adam Lallana missed the derby, but Rodgers added: “We need to see how he is but he has a big possibility for Tuesday.”

................

Assuming only Lucas is not fit to start and that Sturridge is now ready to start :

................................. Ming

............ Skrtel .......... Lovren ....... Sahko

Hendo........................ Can ....................... Moreno

... Lallana ................. Coutinho ................Sterling

.................................. Sturridge

Subs from: Ward, Johnson, Enrique, Manquillo, Allen, Gerrard, Lambert, Markovic, Ibe, Borini, Balotelli

Stopping Eriksen and Kane is going to be the priority for the defence which is why I've got Can in front of them and Hendo able to track Eriksen back.

No chance we should be changing the defence. They've got 4 clean sheets in the last 4 games and are playing brilliantly.

Ming
Can Skrtel Sakho
Ibe Hendo Allen Moreno
Coutinho Sterling
Sturridge

So we're dropping points and suffering injuries, eh?

Bit of a pity Rodgers played all our best players in the fucking FA cup before two crucial league games, isn't it? It's insane he feels under pressure to win a trophy: what he achieved last year is worth 5 FA bloody cups.

The tricky bit is if Coutinho and Sterling also can't make it, and Gerrard needs resting.

I'm liking the likelihood of Ibe being matched up against Rose. I think Ibe could well be the game winner for us on that day. He was our best threat in the first half against Everton but strangely, we went away from him after the break. This time, let's do it right and let him deflower Rose.

Thats a bit unfair though. You could say the fuck up was not winning at Anfield.

But Lucas wasnt involved in the rematch and Coutinho/Sterling took knocks against Everton. Getting kicked in your knee and foot in a Merseyside derby hardly has anything to do with the rematch in the FA cup.
That can happen in any game.

Taking our chances or not on Saturday without the game on Wednesday is guesswork at best.
Another day the Ibe shot and a couple of Sterling/Gerrards shots goes in.

We just have to patch together a team for this out of whoever is fresh

It's not going to be pretty

I think Allen will deputise well enough for Lucas - Spurs aren't a particularly physical side in midfield.

Coutinho will be a massive fucking loss if he's unfit. So much of Sturridge's goal threat is dependent on good supply - Coutinho is the best source of it.

Lallana being unfit at the same time is a bummer.

Even if 3 outta 4 of Sterling, Coutinho, Lucas & Lallana are unavailable I'd still fancy us to cause Spurs problems.....

.........................................Ming.................................
....................Skrtel.........Sakho.........Lovren.....................
Henderson....................................................Moreno...........
........................Can................Markovic................
...........Ibe.................................................Lallana........
................................Sturridge................................

I think both Coutinho and Sterling will be fit.

Lucas out for a month isnt good, if true and confirmed later today.

I know Markovic is a bit lightweight, but his hair is still a dead giveaway and the officials will notice our trick.

That's the 2nd time in quick succession that I've had us fielding 12 players, I miss the 4-4-2 formation.

@TonyBarretTimes: Brendan Rodgers confirms Lucas "will miss a bit of time" but expects Countinho, Sterling & Lallana to be fit for Spurs.

Interesting - wouldn't Lazar at RWB where he has shown some form and Hendo in the middle where we know he is more effective a more obvious line up?

I'd actually expect to see:

------------------Mignolet-------------------
-----------Can---Skrtel---Sakho-----------
Markovic-----------------------Moreno---
--------------Hendo--Allen-----------------
--------Ibe-------------------Sterling-------
-----------------Sturridge-----------------

Possibly but I'd be inclined to play Markovic down the middle. As I mentioned earlier my line up was just to highlight our strength in depth (apart from cover for Sturridge) in that if Lucas, Sterling and Coutinho are all out injured we'll still be able to field a team capable of beating Spurs.

Just posted this in the Lucas thread (didn't see this one)...

Maybe we'll switch to the diamond to surprise 'em...
--------------------------------------Mignolet---------------------------------

Manquillo/Johnson-------Skrtel----------Sakho------------Moreno

-------------------------------------Can---------------------------

-----------------------Henderson-----------Coutinho/Allen-----------------

-----------------------------Coutinho/Ibe/Lallana-------------------------------

--------------------Sterling --------------------------Sturridge---------------

...with Sterling dropping deeper if needed.

Terry McDermott wants Liverpool FC to pile misery on Spurs once again

Kop legend relives his iconic strike against the Londoners in 1978

Terry McDermott made a habit of tormenting Tottenham during his playing days.

Now the Kop legend is hoping to see Brendan Rodgers’ side dish out some similar treatment when the clubs meet at Anfield on Tuesday night.
McDermott provided the emphatic finish to what Liverpool FC boss Bob Paisley hailed as the “best goal Anfield had ever seen”.

It was September 1978 and the Kirkby-born midfielder delivered the final touch to a sweeping attack as Tottenham were humiliated 7-0. It remains Spurs’ heaviest ever league defeat.

For three-time European Cup winner McDermott, back on his old stomping ground this week to take fans behind the scenes on Anfield’s Legends Tours, the memories of that autumn afternoon remain vivid.

“It was an unbelievable goal – not because I scored it but because of the quality of the build up,” he told the ECHO.

“For Bob to say it was the best he’d ever seen at Anfield was some compliment.

“It came from their corner and I was defending the post. Fifteen seconds later the ball was in the back of their net.

“For what reason I don’t know, I decided to run the length of the pitch. I tell you what, I’m glad I did.

“It was Kenny Dalglish to David Johnson to Steve Heighway. Without even having a touch, Steve hit it first time with his left peg and the cross was absolutely inch perfect.

“I came running in, got my head on it and it flew into the top corner. I didn’t score many with my head. It was a great team goal.

“Spurs had two World Cup winners in their team in Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles but we were fantastic that day. It could have been double figures.

“I’ve read comments from Ossie saying that game was a wake-up call. It opened their eyes to English football because we pummelled them.”

McDermott repeated the trick against Spurs the following season as he scored twice in a 2-1 victory at Anfield. Then in March 1980 his stunning volley proved to be the winner in a FA Cup sixth round tie at White Hart Lane. It was voted BBC Goal of the Year.

On Tuesday night the 63-year-old will be an interested onlooker as Liverpool look to claim Tottenham’s scalp once again. It’s a crucial battle in the race for Champions League qualification with fifth placed Spurs currently four point better off.

McDermott expects Rodgers’ side to banish the frustration of Saturday’s derby stalemate with Everton.

“Tottenham were always a lucky team to play against for me,” McDermott said.

“I just hope me being here for the game will ensure that luck rubs off on the Liverpool players!

“Just one defeat in the last 14 games is a great run and if Liverpool can replicate that kind of form over the next 14 games then they should force their way into the top four. That’s got to be the aim.

“The derby wasn’t great but I can’t remember playing in many entertaining derby matches. Quite often they were just a hard slog. You could see on Saturday that neither team wanted to lose. A point wasn’t a bad result.

“Spurs are in good form and they keep on nicking goals right at the death. They did it again on Saturday against Arsenal. They are a decent side but if Liverpool play like they can they will win.”

McDermott believes the return of Daniel Sturridge, who could make his first start on Tuesday night since the Reds’ 3-0 win over Spurs in the capital in August, will provide a massive boost to the club’s top-four push.

“They have missed that quality in the final third,” he said.

“Sturridge being back makes a big difference. He’s a real goal threat. There’s no reason why Liverpool can’t get into the top four and get to Wembley in the FA Cup.”

McDermott needed time to fully establish himself at Liverpool following his move from Newcastle in 1974. And he has been impressed by how the likes of Emre Can, Lazar Markovic and Alberto Moreno have started to make an impact after a similarly tough start to their Anfield careers.

“It took me two years to hold down a place,” he said.

“My dream looked like fading. Then I got a hat-trick against Hamburg and that sparked my career off.

“It’s even more difficult for foreign players these days. The pressure and expectation takes some getting used to. You walk around Melwood and see all the trophies, all the pictures of top players celebrating. You think ‘how do I follow that?’ But a lot of the new boys are contributing now and it’s good to see.”

During his eight years at the club Liverpool won five league titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and two League Cups.

McDermott, who in 1980 became the first player to win the Football Writers’ and Professional Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year awards in the same season, scored 81 goals in 329 appearances.

On Monday he was enthralling Kopites once again as he reminisced about his playing days during tours behind the scenes at Anfield.

“I had an unbelievable time here,” he said, holding court in the home dressing room.

“Every day I stepped foot in here I felt like I had won the Pools.

“Yes, we had great players but we also had a great dressing room. That camaraderie, that bond was crucial. Every time we walked through that door we were all together.

“To go from watching games from the Boys Pen on the Kop to playing for the club was a dream for me. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

This one is huge, if we lose this then we are pretty much cooked in terms of making it to the top 4 and we will need to throw the kitchen sink at the Europa league to get back in the CL next season

Anyone thinking of reverting to the diamond?

Feels a bit like Martinez knew the wingback system we were playing quite well and handled it. Wouldn't surprise me if Pochettino was also very well prepared.

It's one thing knowing it and quite another handling it - see 2013/14 and the Diamond too. Everton had a very defensive line-up (3 virtual DMs), Spurs' recent run has seen them play far more attacking football and they will probably play their game and not re-jink their team just to handle our WBs, thereby sacrificing their own recently successful formation.

Sterling out of tonights game according to Ben Smith BBC.

Rumour is Coutinho and Markovic behind Sturridge

I'm surprised Sterling has lasted this long, despite his holiday. He's been kicked around the pitch by various thugs from Everton, Bolton, West Ham and Chelsea in the past few weeks, with absolutely no protection from referees.

Its going to catch up with Coutinho as well
