Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur Match Thread

"That Tottenham scored within one minute of Dembele being removed is likely no coincidence, as Liverpool’s game plan was completely centered around him and him alone. With him gone, they had no one player to target."

What a load of embarrassing fucking bollocks

Also, on an unrelated note… Those two tackles that TAA unflinchingly launched himself into in the first half made my heart sing.

The kid’s a gem.
Are you also getting midfielder vibes?

And it doesn't matter if he touched it

It wasn't a deliberate touch. No one in their right mind can claim he meant to misskick it like that

It wasn't a sloppy pass, it was an unfortunate bobble

I think it would count as a deliberate touch in the sense that he swung his leg, rather than say had his back turned and the ball ricocheted off him. However I can't tell how much of a faint touch he got in it.

Pretty poor that the pundits aren't talking about Kane's dive - which was clear.

I don't get this at all. We've found a great prospect at fullback...why are we even considering playing him elsewhere after what, 20 odd first team appearances?

Let the lad settle in and give him the best chance we can of turning into the player he shows promise of being.

I prefer him over Gomez tbh, and Gomez is more of an actual defender, but I just think TAA has that quality going forward and he's not exactly a slouch at the back, he'll be a bit rash (what 20 year old isn't?), but he's improving with his positioning and general decision making. Some of his crosses and long range passes yesterday were sublime.

The midfield option is an interesting proposition though, but right now I don't trust Gomez to play every game, because he's making the same mistakes in every game.

They're both hugely promising, we're really fortunate in that position.

Because he started out as a midfielder and has been praised for his versatility, and full-back is the only way he's getting first team games.

I'm keen for that versatility to be maintained, because I don't think he's actually been consistent enough to play regularly at RB anyway. He's defensively naive.

He's 19. He might end up in midfield or he might stay where he is...I just don't think we need to force the issue.

He'll get games at RB, so I'm happy with that so far. But he's certainly got aspects of his game that would suggest he could easily play further up the pitch (passing, speed)

I suppose there will be some lingering memories of Gerrard and his first few appearances as a full-back, which may be adding to a bit of the hype around TAA (allied with his local boy status, and Gerrard's long-stated and oft-repeated admiration for the player), even if he's never going to be that player, and doesn't have the stature or physique for it either.

Versatility also comes with some risk though doesn't it? He becomes another 'utility' player who can do a job here and there. We've got the makings of a first class player here...he's not perfect and far from the finished article. He could become the new Phil Neal...our first choice full back for years, captain of the club and one of our most decorated players. Or he could become the new James Milner.

A new James Milner would be great news for the club.

I think Ings should’ve come on for Firmino. Firmino was done and couldn’t really move. At least Ings could’ve pressured from the front instead of clearances coming straight back at us.

Incidentally he’s playing tonight.

Only if he was considerably better than the old one, capable of holding down a regular place rather than slotting in here and there as required.

I strongly disagree that he needs to be "considerably better than the old one". Milner isn't just a player who can fill a number of roles, he's a player who can do so to a good standard, not just "do a job" in those positions. If we could get a younger version then great, but he's been an excellent signing.

He has indeed been a very good signing. Not because he's grabbed hold of a position and made it his own, regularly producing 8 out of 10 match winning / saving performances...but because he's just been a better option than some of the shit immediately behind him in the pecking order. Whatever position he's occupied as soon as we've brought someone better he's dropped out of the regular starting line up. He's like that player every international manager wants in his squad for a major championship...not exceptional at anything but capable of providing cover in three or four positions so worth a seat on the plane.

Back to the game and one of points raised in the article posted by Ltw, there's a notible issue with the midfield now that Coutinho is gone, there's barely any creativity from the midfield three. Our ability to shuffle it around is also hampered by the loans of Sturridge and Grujic, and now Ings is injured. Firmino was an option to drop deep, while we do have Lallana (who's struggling with niggles) and AOC, who's hit and miss.

So basically all of the concerns raised over the sale of Coutinho and not buying anyone else, look like coming to fruition.

We're running on empty and we'll be really lucky if it doesn't cost us.

All this based on a week were we grabbed 4 points, scored 5 goals. Prior the weekend you claimed that if we dropped out of top four over the weekend we deserved massive critisism and heavy beating. After the weekend we are third. So how about some credit?

Matches like that dont require a coutinho in my opinion, with the ball and turning over the ball we are super effective. Is when we are out of possession, Gini,Can,Henderson & Milner all lose their shit.

The Spurs pressure, as the City pressure and Seville pressure and Arsenal pressure and on and on becomes nigh on impossible to defend and we just repeatedly wither, I dont think theres a worse team in the league at withstanding attackas us. We need a pacey option to push the opponent Cbs back in the current system as hoof ball is just insta-turning overpossession at present as
Firmino is shagged by the 70th minute and Salah understandably is also leggy.

Moving a player from higher up the pitch and placing them at CB/ deep lying midfield, such is Klopps preference is absolutely not the answer in my opinion, why not bring on Solanke/anyone that can stand on the half way line and stop that simple ball that disects our midfield every time

Half decent performances from AOC and Gini would help too

Read my fucking posts since the Spurs game, I praised, sympathised and defended us. I'm not criticising the performance one bit, go and read my reply to Redninja in his thread, defending us again.

Sorry if that doesn't fit in with your hissy fit with anyone pointing out valid concerns.

Coutinho had the ability to carry the ball on the break through and to release it effectively from deep, we weren't doing that after Henderson went off, we were just getting rid and gifting it back to them. He helped us maintain possession, which is half the battle in the big games.
