Lovren has been very good since Matip has been out and hopefully has proved to some how valuable he is to the squad. As a 3rd choice CB (ahead of Gomez now in the pecking order) he is more than decent.

Yup.

Anyways, another poor performance in which we struggled for goals and further underlined our lack of depth in key areas (not that we needed it to).

Ah well, at least we didn't lose! Hopefully we can get the job done in the last game.

It’s not that odd. I think he’s starting to use up his 44 goal season credits.

It's odd because I didn't think he was THAT good even when he was THAT good. He just doesn't have that next level technique that we've seen from the likes of Suarez. He's always been pretty loose with the ball when passing. He's wriggly, he's strong, but he's not an ungodly dribbler, he doesn't have the best touch, and there are ways of playing him, which Napoli obviously have figured out. He just really suits the team.

Right now, not as much.

That doesn't much matter though. He certainly can be better than what he's currently showing and if we want to win the league, he'll need to be. Most teams aren't napoli. Most teams in the premier league, he has more than enough to be really lethal against.

We were dogshite From minute 1-40 and then again from minute 45-94

Got lucky to come away with a draw in the end, we created next to nothing.... koulibaly off the line which came from a keeping howler

Stop using makeshift fullbacks and actually sign some fucking decent cover
Wijnaldum is fucking useless.
Milner needs to go in summer.
Robbo needs to never take another corner again.
Klopp needs to bring on forwards if he intends to get a winner not a fucking defender

Napoli didn't come to win the game, they came not to lose. According to what I read, Ancelotti could teach Maureen on how to park the bus. I don't get the bitching, we didn't lose and still top of the table

Fabinho left Anfield wearing a protective boot. Don't sound great.

It doesnt, but every player does that to protect themselves and use it as a precaution.

Klopp didnt sound to optimistic, and Fabs will have a scan today.
Think we’re looking at a few weeks out.

He was the motm, by a mile. He has performances like this, where he looks world class. Then... well, lets just say he's not consistent. He's absolutely good enough to be 3rd choice.
If only there was a way to pick him in for the matches when he's going to be world class and drop him for the other ones.

Those Napoli capos certainly seem to have our number, they came and frustrated us yet again, to leave our CL progress looking very wobbly indeed. We just can't keep a clean sheet, and while this amazing run hasn't seen us lose many games (and none for about two years or something in the Premier League) we're stumbling and stuttering in such a way that a faceplant looks inevitable soon.

This was a frustrating, tedious, puddle of mediocrity. We couldn't get going properly at all, and our normal quick passing and counter-attacks were almost nowhere to be seen. Yuck. Still, we're not out of it yet - even though we seem to be doing our best to be out of it - and we didn't lose. Apart from that, almost no positives.

Alisson (6) Not sure we can attach much blame for the goal (can we?) but he needs to start keeping some clean sheets soon.

Gomez (4) He was OK, defensively, but I suppose we're so used to the attacking quality and passing of TAA, that this looked poor in comparison, he is obviously happier at CB, and his pace and recovery ability is still there, but he looks totally clueless going forward.

Virgil (6) Bounced off the ball by a dwarf (in comparison to him anyway) which was a bit embarrassing. OK after that, won a few headers and got better in the second half, but not his best game by a long shot.

Lovren (7) Couple of typically brave blocks and was dominant in the air. Passing wasn't quite as sharp as it has been recently, but was our best player and also scored a thunderous header to rescue a point.

Robertson (5) He was working as hard as ever, but his final ball was horrible, bar one lovely pass. Wasteful on corners, too. Pretty ordinary overall.

Fabinho (n/a) Injured. Which isn't good news. We lost a bit of fluidity and solidity with the Big Red Nope missing. Hope to God it's not serious.

Henderson (6) Possibly being a bit generous, but gets some credit for doing a decent stint at RB. Pinged over a few decent crosses from the right which deserved better, and he did try and inject a bit of urgency into proceedings, but some of that flatness was down to his ponderous, safe passing.

Milner (6) He was happy to get back onto the pitch, and also seemed very keen on getting a goal, popping off a few shots and looking a threat. Helped out Robbo a few times as we tried to get the equaliser, and duly stuck a lovely ball onto Lovren's big swede for the equaliser. But there's no denying that Milner and Henderson midfields do lack a bit of that explosive game-changing quality you sometimes need.

Salah (4) One or two eye-catching bits of skill, but no real threat. Shooting was poor and he struggled to make much of an impact wide or through the middle, with Khoulibaly easily getting the better of him again (apart from one slip).

Mane (5) The occasional burst of pace and did some good work hounding Napoli, but like Salah, he struggled to get into the game and seemed to struggle to work out why.

Firmino (6) Looked sharp and creative in spells, trying to link midfield and attack, and was also cute with his passing. Dropped too deep too too much, though and wasted one good chance with a weak header.

Subs:

Wijnaldum (6) After his disastrous game against Palace, he came on and did a decent impression as a holding midfielder, which he might need to do a few more times if Fabinho is crocked.

Chamberlain (6) Adds a bit of spice to our bland midfield fare, and made a few dangerous runs and a decent cross or two, as he ran at the Napoli defence. Couldn't kep it up though, and seemed to slow down (injury?)

TAA (5) Not really on for long enough to do much.

As for Mane you could see that they doubled up on him well, stop Mane and then you stop Liverpool at the moment. Unfortunately I feel that the club won't admit that Salah's ankle has affected his balance and mobility a little. Lack of balance has affected his ability to dribble with confidence and aggression. So in recent weeks we have adjusted and everything goes through Mane instead, but Napoli was wise and realised just double up on Mane and then stick one person on Salah and job done. I think the club think that even a comprimised Salah is better than nothing becasue of his off the ball movement, but sometimes as yesterday the gamble doesnt pay off and it youre better off taking him off and playing someone who can use the ball better.

So what do Napoli do to us, that always causes us issues? Is it pressing on our Full backs? Fair play to Ancelloti - he's learned since 2005 🙂

That's always been my point; Matip & VVD are obviously our preferred partnership but when you look at the back-up centre backs at any of our competitors (domestic or CL) you realise how lucky we are to have Lovren and (hopefully sometime soon) a fully fit Gomez.

Fitness does not excuse the poor defensive positioning or the lack of awareness of where players are.
For me that puts Lovren a head of Gomez in the peaking order

They doubled up on mane, playing the RM basically as a second RB which completely restricted him, Salah's injury is limiting him.

They play three at the back (kind of, was arguably 5 at times & have great counter attacking players, so could exploit us with our main weakness, quick, clever, long balls.

Loads of teams have tried to do this in similar fashion, but they're not Italian teams with classic Italian defensive players who can also press brilliantly.

Ancelloti is a truly remarkable tactician, & this was obvious when he switched things up after about 15 mins of the second half, we'd clearly highlighted weaknesses to exploit & worked very hard to do so, then he changed something to stop us (still not sure what, haven't had a chance to rewatch the match yet).

Then you have the injury to Fabinho, & possibly the almost injury to VVD which may have shaken his confidence a bit.

Yet with all that, we still got a draw.

I'm just glad there's only one Napoli, I just wish we'd stop fucking drawing them in the CL.

Some Brazilian journo who was at the game yesterday, saying that Fabinho will be out for a month. Probably bollocks obviously, but its the first news reported about the injury.

Fuck that guy and everything he stands for!

Search his fb and I am sure you will find out that his kid is named Kun and he is a bluefume member.

Horrendous timing. The only silver lining is that one game he would have missed anyway, but that's scant consolation considering how many big games we have this month.

I'm also worried about its knock on effect, we are typically at our poorest in January under Klopp, which I suspect is why he's had us playing 'in third gear', & rarely have we seen the side go full throttle, rather trying to win without expending us much energy as normal, like we're buying into playing in phases massively, even at the cost of our rhythm & seeing out games.

We then usually sail into magnificent form from Feb onwards, but if this injury & fixture pile up cause us to falter in December, & then we do have our usual January, that lead we have could easily have eroded by then.

It's too early to play chicken little by any means, but it's a worrying sign.

If I'm trying to look at the glass as half full, the fact we've been winning games by any means necessary & forcing teams into submission by simply grinding them down, will help massively now, cos you don't need to quality to continue doing that, just one or two great moments from the odd player & a shitload of work from the rest, plus that belief we have.

If he’s back for the 11th Jan these are the games he misses.

Brighton
Blue shite
Bournemouth
Salzburg
Watford
Villa
WCC semi
WCC final
Leicester
Wolves
Sheffield United

Out of that list I’d be most worried of him missing Leicester and Wolves. The rest we should win without him.

We will have to pick 3 from

Henderson
Milner
Wijnaldum
Oxlade-Chamberlain

This is a time Keita would be useful but he’ll probably get injured. Again. Then there is the almost as useless Lallana.

Its not good, but injuries are part & parcel of the game.

Don't forget 12 months ago we sat top of the league with a side that had barely featured Fabinho. Gini, Lala or Henderson can all play that role - not as well as Fabinho, obviously, but they can do well enough, and that then opens up opportunities for Chamberlain, Keita and Shaqiri towards the front end the of midfield

Tbf, despite Lallana looking 'out of place' due to his tendency to take too many touches on the ball, when he's been on the pitch this season he's usually contributing positively, albeit a very small sample size.

Regardless of our opinion of him, klopp really rates him, & as such I think we'll see a fair bit of him.

The alternative is Klopp switching formation, using Milner more, which is possible (like a few weeks into last season) & gives us a Shaqiri who can make an impact on games (he's useless in our usual 4-3-3), but unlikely considering he hasn't tried it once that I can remember this season.

Individually we should win them all, but missing him for that many matches in that short a time will be the bigger problem. Everyone around him will have to work that bit harder, and we'll be much more likely to have more injuries and/or drop points against any of those teams. I fear this is the point where our luck turns the other direction.

I agree that the intensity of games will be our biggest issue. Just as it will be for our rivals.

If Keita is to step it up for the then it has to be now. Adding him to the mix will relieve some of those minutes the others will play.

I believe should Gini , henderson and co play to the level we know they can we will be fine.

Not related positionally but Shaqiri returning is big , offering us more quality in final third and allowing for effective changes to shape and formation without substantial drop in ability or quality

The villa and two WCC matches make December so much more a cluster fuck than it should be , I think we can discount the cup match ,very few first team players will be involved.

It would be great if the club are identifying talent we could bring in to keep this title run going come January , honestly feel it could be a difference maker
