I don't give a fuck about anything other than this:

We've replaced Mascherano with an older, worse player, in a vital part of the pitch.

So I don't see how it's *in any way* a good thing

Can you imagine the sheer horror of seeing the Danish Robbie Savage lining up with Lucarse?

My EYES!
Ok. But we might add a left back and a striker, so while we've lessened one area (perhaps), we've strengthened two.

I really can't see why people are struggling to see that the key issue was strengthening the team and the squad. I'd take two new additions in those key areas and Poulsen over keeping Masher and getting fuck all else in, because we'll just fuck up again like we did last year, for the same reasons.

WE NEED A LEFT BACK AND A STRIKER. How fucking hard is it to understand?

I think the majority are presuming it isn't the end of our transfer activity and a striker and LB will also be purchased from the Masher funds.
Yeah, we'll surely sign more players.

But as you've said, if it's Brad Jones, a Luke Young equivalent and some cheap striker... it's not going to be too encouraging.
What the fuck are you on about?
Yes, he's leaving. He's wanted to leave for a year.
We're still replacing him with a worse player
Perhaps Poulsen is the VERY BEST option. Which isn't likely.
But we've signed a replacement for Masher who is worse.
That's not 'a good thing' no matter how much you fucking quack on about it
I'm pretty sure it was you who said like for like replacements very rarely work out.
Like Spoin said Ronaldo's replacement was Valencia, different type of players but their team is still balanced and functioning with Rooney stepping up last season.

It all comes down to who is brought in with the Mash cash. If we strengthen at LB and up front the team overall should still perform and should improve on last season. If it is the 1st September and we haven't bought anyone else then we will struggle.

It can't be though.

We'll get at least £25M for Masher (everything less would be daylight robbery) and as we've only actually spend £2M on Poulsen upfront that leaves a lot of money for improvement.

I'm completely with Mark on this:

Poulsen + LB + Striker > Masher
Well, that's my point
Alonso gone, Masher gone, Lucas and Aquilani still here

*cries*
Fair enough, I'm not overawed with the engine room being between Lucas and Poulsen, but....

Gerrard will probably now revert to central midfield, which gives us another body in there who is better than any of the above. We've added Cole, a more than capable player for the hole position. So although Lucas and Aquilani are in there and Alonso and Masher are gone, we've readded Gerrard to that area (and Poulsen).

If we get a striker and left back (who are upto scratch), I think ultimately it might be better. Being the sum of our parts and all that.

With less reliance on the Masher role too, one would hope.

thats a disgusting price. fucking hell. all i can do is forget about it and pretend that he came on a free transfer
How is that a disgusting price? There have been far worse players being traded at much higher prices. Most sources quoted 6M, so to sign him for 4.5M its a good deal
Maybe you didn't read it right.

It's 4.5m upfront in 2 payments plus a potential 1.2m in add ons, which makes the deal, more likely, 5.7m.

Given that we clearly have very little money to spend and sare scrapping around trying to find the odd player here and there to fill our our squad, I suppose he'll have to do.
what crap. It's 2m quid now (affordable) and 2m quid in a year (hopefully under new owners) it's a very shrewd deal. And IF we pay the add ons it means we have achieved. I'm not over enamoured about signing him, I really don't rate him but for a club with not a pot to piss in, it's sensible.
It's not a shrewd deal.. it's a cheap deal.

We're paying at least 4.5m, spread over 2 years and potentially more for a 30 year old defensive midfielder who's probably just alright.

I guarantee you that by the end of the season someone (possibly you) will post something along the lines of "why did we waste 5m on 30 year old defensive midfielders whwe we could have spent a few more million and got a younger, better version.. nlah, blah"

At the end of the day... we've signed him... meh!.. I'm sure he'll have an important part to play in our squad... but I hope we';ve enough left in the kitty to sort out LB & another striker.

I know, that is the fear. I'm trying to give Roy the benefit of the doubt until that happens though.

So we're assuming that Gerrard will move back into a CM position?

Well, that still means he will nedd the freedom to move forward and score goals, because nobody else other than Torres will get many

Which means that he'll leave gaping holes behind him, which require a top quality holding player to fill.

Is the Danish Robbie Savage good enough and mobile enough to do that? Or will we see Old Uncle Roy decide that, like Benitez did before him, we require *two* holding players behind Stevie

Because that will be fucking Poulsen and that other cunt

Which woild be dismal

Robbies Savage's CV:

Crewe Alexandra
Leicester City
Birmingham City
Blackburn Rovers 76
Derby County 85
Brighton & Hove Albion

Christian's CV:

FC Copenhagen
Schalke 04
Sevilla
Juventus

There's a lot of frustration with our transfers, and rightly so.

We used to break transfer records, now we're skint and scraping the basement.

That's reality, and ife.

We just have to make the best of it.

And thusfar, it looks like we are..and whilst it's not grounds for cheering it's still something.

No, he won't.

Because he'll realise that we didnt have the extra 7-8 million for Defour and had to get someone in bacause Barca were fucking with us over Masher.

If we think we've overpaid with Poulsen, I guarantee you that if we were still negotiating with Barca until the end of the window (which we probably will be),we'd have gotten even more underpaid than we now will be.

Brendan, why not give the player a chance before slapping him with an idiotic nickname.

I'm not enamoured with this signing but you're being ridiculous.

Sunny - Sevilla and Schalke have been good teams the past decade. Tier II teams in Europe, which isn't bad at all.
So one decent team between them all then.
Derby?

Sevilla were very, very good the season they won the UEFA Cup. Was Poulsen playing for them then?

From wiki;

(...)
Following his first month at the club (Sevilla in 2006), he was named the best new signing in Spain by Spanish sports daily Marca.[6] He became the first player to be named Danish Player of the Year for two consecutive years, when he also won the 2006 award. He helped Sevilla defend the UEFA Cup title, winning the 2006–07 edition of the tournament and also won the Spanish Cup that year.

In his time at Sevilla, Poulsen improved his touch and technique, and evolved into a commanding midfielder.[7]

But yeah lets compare him to some medicore English player whom played for the likes of Birmingham, Blackburn and Derby.

The stupidity on here are mindblowing at times.

As much as I dislikePoulsen ... credit where credit is due, he really did grow as a player at Sevilla.

Although he wasn't always in the line up - it was usually Marti and Maresca in midfield ... he did improve alot and his performances did catch the eye of some bigger clubs, rightly so.

My biggest concern with Poulsen is his ability to control his temper.

He can be just as destructive at Mascherano in terms of defensive capabilities... but very rarely do you see Mascherano committing fouls where the opposition player could seriously be injured.

BUT, as with Joe Cole, I'll put aside my beliefs of the player and give him every opportunity to prove himself at the club.

Good luck and I hope its good business by Hodgson.

Like I mentioned before, he was very impressive for Sevilla during his spell with them. That was what earned him a move to Juventus, even though it turned out to be a poor one (but its not always a player issue. Look at Melo, Diego after moving to Juve from Fiorentina and Werder Bremen).

He may be a 'worse' player than Mascherano but how much did we pay for both? If we had the entire/majority of the money from his pending transfer, then its a different story. In this case, its about value for money, which is a pretty modest one for an experienced international player who has plyed his trade in the top leagues of Europe and played with star players during that time. For the same fee, could we have gotten a better player than Poulsen?

Well now that he's a Liverpool player, give the lad a chance to prove himself before shooting him down based on his past reputation.

So he'll probably play against Arsenal, I guess...
Who knows? Hodgson said last week that if Masher was still here he would probably play.

Tehe....
