Liverpool linked to Silvestre

Catania star reportedly attracting interest from Reds and Villarreal

The versatile 26-year-old has been playing for the Serie A club for the past three-and-a-half seasons, having arrived in Italy from Boca Juniors in January 2008.

His performances over the past 12 months have been particularly impressive and Catania general manager Pietro Lo Monaco admitted in April it was probably time for him to move on to a bigger stage.

Lo Monaco has now declared that Liverpool are among the clubs chasing Silvestre's signature, along with Villarreal and a couple of Italian rivals.

"Top of the list of those moving on is Silvestre," Lo Monaco told Itasportpress.

"I'd struggle to keep him here, considering what a great player he is. There are two Italian clubs tracking him, but Liverpool and Villarreal are also interested in Silvestre.

"Silvestre is worth as much as Thiago Silva and scores more goals."

Where does he play?

Re: Re: Liverpool linked with Silvestre

Arf!

What's his footballing position on the pitch?

He's an Argie, meaning he's two footed and likely to want to fuck off elsewhere to somewhere warmer in a few years.

New Catania boss Vincenzo Montella expects to be deprived of Matias Silvestre on the transfer market.

“If a good offer arrives then I do believe that he will be sold,” the former Roma tactician told Radio Centro Suono Sport.

“He’s a really good player who has margins of improvement. It will be very disappointing to lose him.”

Silvestre, 26, is a versatile Argentine defender who joined the Sicilian side in January 2008 after six years with Boca Juniors.

Catania chief Pietro Lo Monaco has admitted that he is ready to listen to all offers for his players.

“I have a squad of 27 and they are all on the market,” Lo Monaco noted. “If offers are made then they will be considered.

“A small club like ours must always look at making money.

“Silvestre? It’s a shame that he could leave and most of the offers for him are coming from abroad,” he concluded.

Catania have admitted that they will find it tough to keep Matias Silvestre. “Alongside Thiago Silva, he’s the best defender in the League.”

New Catania boss Vincenzo Montella recently admitted that he expects to be deprived of the Argentine and director Pietro Lo Monaco has confirmed as much.

“I think it will be very hard to keep Silvestre,” the official stated on Monday.

I’m not being presumptuous when I say that he is the strongest centre-back in the Italian championship alongside Thiago Silva of Milan.

As well as knowing how the defend, he also scored six goals in the past campaign – he’s an important player.

“It would be sad if he was to go abroad and I hope he remains in Serie A, also because he is an Oriundo which means he could be of use to the Italian national side.”

Silvestre, 26, is a versatile stopper who joined the Sicilian side in January 2008 after six years with Boca Juniors.

Unless he's got an European Passport, he's not getting a work permit. Never represented the country at any level.

Haven't seen him before, but if he can't make the experimental squad that even Insua was part of recently, something has to be wrong/fishy?

Oriundo.Learnt a new word. 😛

It is most likely to be used to indicate a sportsman born in Latin America, whose ancestors emigrated from Italy or Spain, and who then immigrates "back" to these countries of origin.

Has Italian passport I guess?

Yes. Just like Camoranesi.

Very good defender, and that article is correct - on par with Thiago Silva from Milan this season.

Very strong guy, physicality of the EPL won't be a problem at all for him.

Reads the game well, good on the ball ... and he scored important goals for Catania last season. If it wasn't for his contribution Catania would have been in the thick of the relegation battle.

There's nothing I can really say that's negative about him.

Very disciplined, only a handful of yellow cards throughout the season - and given Catania's low position in the league that's quite impressive.

Versatile ... can play anywhere across the back line, with centre back and right back being his better roles.

I think he holds an Italian passport ... I dunno too much about the laws in England, he's not played at all for Argentina or Italy so this might be a big obstacle if we are looking to make any deal.

I think if he holds an Italian passport, then it's okay for a work permit even if he's not played at the national level (EU freedom of movement rules?).

I think also I might've been wrong in my original post when I mentioned that he stood no chance of a work permit if he hadn't played at the national levels (assuming he didn't have an EU passport).

I found the case of Salomon Kalou: from the Wiki entry (okay not the best source but bear with me for now), he'd played at Feyenoord for a couple of seasons but failed to get a Dutch passport prior to his move to Chelsea in 2006. Apparently he didn't appear for Cote d'Ivoire until February 2007, but he'd played for Chelsea before that. So, without an EU passport, without international representation, yet he managed to play.

Then of course, you've the case of Mark Gonzalez, who actually did play at the national level but got swatted back a season or two.

I give up!

Catania will hold talks with Juventus with regards to the futures of Matias Silvestre and Jorge Martinez.

The Argentine centre-back is of interest to the Old Lady, while Martinez doesn’t seem to figure in the plans of new Juve boss Antonio Conte.

“I’ll see and talk to [Juventus general director Beppe] Marotta on Friday,” Catania chief Pietro Lo Monaco told Tuttosport.

“As far as I am concerned, Matias is one of the strongest centre-backs in the Italian championship. There is no doubt about that.

“He proved as much last season in a campaign where he also scored six goals. What more do you want from a defender?”

Lazio are understood to have made a €4m offer for Silvestre, but Catania value him at a higher price. “He’s worth €8m.”

Turning to Martinez, who Juve paid Catania €12m for last summer, Lo Monaco seemed open to re-embracing the Uruguayan attacker.

“I’ll tell Marotta that if he doesn’t find a buyer and he wants to recycle Martinez then I’ll step forward,” the Rossoblu official added.

“I say recycle in a good way. I maintain that Jorge is a great player and he can regenerate in the right environment.

“However, I can’t offer him the kind of wages that he earns at Juventus. I would need a little help [from Juve]…”

Martinez had an injury-hit campaign in Turin last season.

Palermo have confirmed they’ll sign Catania defender Matias Silvestre on Monday. “We just have to work out which players go in exchange.”
Talks have been going on for over a week and the Rosanero beat competition from Juventus for the Argentine.

“On Monday there will be this final meeting between directors Sean Sogliano and Pietro Lo Monaco to complete the transfer,” said President Maurizio Zamparini.

We just have to work out which players go to Catania in exchange, but the deal is done.”
