If we get in the Champions League next season what sort of sort stage would people be expecting us to reach?

I haven't watched too much of it since we last qualified. If we had been in the group Man Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea had this season how would our current team have coped?

I suppose what I'm wondering is just how much do we need to improve if we want a shot at getting beyond the group stage?

BR has no experience in Europe. I suppose if we lose in the final I'll be placated with that knowledge....

I would like to think we'd have been able to get out of any group, but the Barca/Bayern groups could have been challenging. However, I think it would likely have had a huge effect on our league form given the limitations in depth of our current squad. Add 3-4 first team quality/challenging players and then I think we can do ok in Europe. Though, bar a huge investment, it would be hugely naive to think this team (as good as it seems to be right now) could go back into Europe and dominate teams like they did a few years ago, we'll have to work our way back into a groove.

Yeh, Europa league last year. I'd expect us to make the knockout stage, assuming we didn't get a Man City esc group, I'd be happy with that, as long as we didn't look out of our depth, which i dont think we would, considering the champions league pedigree we have in our squad.

I think we'd get out of the group, after that it's anyone's guess.

I have to say, I'm surprised how excited I am at the prospect of us playing in it again. I honestly hadn't given it much thought until the last couple of weeks, but now I really believe it'll happen it's a great feeling.

God I hope we don't fuck it up.

Or was that Kenny?

Zenit, i was at that one, frustrating, we done the hard work but just couldn't find that goal with half hour to get it, Shelvey screwed up the best chance, Suarez was on his knees in the centre circle after the final whistle beating his fists on the floor, well pissed.

That away game against Zenit is the only game i can remember Suarez having a real mare in and costing us, would of pissed that tie if he had just scored one of the many clear chances he had.

I won't be counting my champions league chickens
-before we finish first or second
-before we finish third and no body below us is still in the champions league
-before we overcome the hurdle of final league qualifiers

We need to buy a few decent players to strengthen the squad that would be the first port of call...

We need better defenders or we'll get badly found out. Exciting to be able to realistically consider though

I hope this thread doesn't

Should we make it though I imagine we'll be a feared team, we can take anyone on our day and absolutely batter them if they have an off day.

I'm wary of how we make the change to playing 2 games a week and how Rodgers handles it all though. He makes mistakes from time to time and admits to learning on the job, there may be a few slip ups along the way with his first European campaign.

2 games a week? No, professional football players will be too tired for that kinda marlarky.

It'll also mean half the team will be injured...

Will the owners stump up the cash needed for a larger squad based on a single season in the CL, though? Won't they be satisfied with the additional marketing opportunities, TV earnings, and still focus on the league where the investment to succeed is likely smaller than a deep CL run? I'm genuinely worried we'll be attacking Europe (if we qualify) with 16 first team players.

We'll make some significant investment if we make it in, as we will need to, but we've got work to do first. I can envision a lot of circumstances where we don't make the CL, just as I can envision some where we win the league.
