Vlad...and Andy are spot on.
We have quite a similar squad but a manager that will use it better and get us 4th
Finishing 7th and missing out on CL money was criminal.
Its a good transfer window.

I was wondering about Riera.

I saw on SSN thathe was sold for 4.2 milion and thought it was shit.
Then I saw SSN another day and it was 3.3 million.

Which was more shit.

NOt sure what's true.

Anyway, Olimpakos are my new favourite Greek team if they can cough up another 1.7 million.

So far, in the circumstances, I'd agree. We do need a new LB and a back-up striker though, and time is running out.

But yeah, it could have been much worse...
I'm not sure if we'll get a back up LB if Insua stays but the Mascherano funds will be used to get in a striker.

Roy's done the important things well by securing our crown jewels first and improving the overall squad.

It's obviously a big loss to say farewell to Masher but as always there is a silver lining.

Keyword for me beeing Balance.

With Masher in your team and the way he's quite litterally covering every inch of the pitch. This is a good thing and a great asset in every team but at the same time it leaves your attacking-minded midfielders with more defensive responsibility. They simply has got to be a bit more careful when going forward should Masher sprint along.

With a holding defensive midfielder like Poulsen the likes of Gerrard, Aquilani and Cole for that matter will enjoy more freedom going forward as he won't join them as often as was the case with Masher. Poulsen is a more commanding presence defensively due to his overall style of play, his physique and height compared to Masher.

Masher simply doesn't thrive in that limited role which I thought was evident at the WC for Argentina where he had to play in a different style due to the ammount of attacking collegues surrounding him.

Fact of the matter is, we could actually end up beeing a slightly more balanced unit than when Masher was around having Christian Poulsen in the team - even though the Argie-lad is the better player of two overall.
That bolded bit is wrong IMO. Masher's ability to cover every blade of grass on the pitch three times over in a game should have the opposite effect, freeing up other players to bomb forward in the secure knowledge that Masher is there behind them to hunt the opposition down. Contrary to what you say, it's his absence IMO which will increase everybody else's defensive responsibilities. Roy's job will be to balance that with the need to play more attacking football overall.

Better than expected in terms of the asset stripping paranoia that was sweeping the boards but given that our main concerns were
New owners
A new manager
Retaining our biggest stars
Plugging the obvious gaps at left back and striker
Reducing the wage bill

How many have we achieved

The only truly important one is changing the owners. Most of our activity until that happens will be the proverbial fiddling while Rome burns, regardless of how well we manage to fiddle. Yes we didnt sell Torres, i am genuinely delighted we didnt, thatll be next season then or maybe christams the rate we are losing money.... replacing the manager .... we will see if thats a good move.... plugging the gaps? still havent done that have we... 3 days to kick off...

I accept i moan about it but at the same time i do have a problem when we herald a weaker player arriving and proclaim that its OK at least we didnt sell Torrres... thats just fucked up.

Ah fuck it i bore myself... transfer threads when you are bankrupt are always going to be an acquired taste im just not very good at calling shit a souffle.

The left-back we are after is Paul Konchesky

Another cracking signing that would be
Considering Hodgson said he would not raid Fulham it seems you may be taking the press reports too literally.

I'm abso...fucking... lutely delighted with the way this Summer has gone so far. We knew Masher was going to be off last season so no need to shed too many tears there, I'd already prepared myself for that eventuality and who knows we may become a more fluid, stronger team without him, world-class though he is.

I don't think we are far off a cracking squad now, even if we don't get Figueroa at LB we still have Aurelio and Kelly, Kyrgiakos is still here so we have 4 very capable CBs with Ayala / Wilson in the wings, RB is a little worry but Kelly / Carra can cover there too. DM is still a key issue for me as I could count the times I've seen Poulson play on one hand so difficult to assess that position until the transfer season ends. I'm pleased though that Lucas seems to have returned to the bench.

Up front I'd like another very good striker but for once we seem to be developing more strength in depth : Gerrard, Aquilani, Cole, Jovanovic, Pacheco, Kuyt, Maxi, Torres. There are plenty of players there good enough to cover 4 slots in the team .... CF aside. I wouldn't be too surprised though to see Kuyt leave and a quality striker arrive.

Could become a shit transfer window if this is true..

Barcelona Agree Deal With Liverpool For Javier Mascherano - Report

Spanish giants Barcelona are set to land Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, after striking a deal with the Reds, according to reports.

The deal will be comprised of a player-plus-cash offer, with the Anfield outfit set to receive midfielder Aliaksandr Hleb and approximately €15 million for the Argentina captain, according to Ole.

The report also claims that the player's agent has already met with Barcelona officials, and confirmation of the deal could come in the next few days.

Mascherano had recently expressed his desire to leave the Reds and join the Spanish side, or reunite with former coach Rafael Benitez at European champions Inter.

The Blaugrana were seeking another midfielder, after Yaya Toure departed the Camp Nou for Manchester City during the summer.

I wouldn't say it has been a great transfer window, what i would say is that it is proof that you can improve a side without a massive net spend if you know what you're doing.
But have we improved?

Nothing from pre-season to indicate either way.

It's great that we retained Gerrard & Torres and Cole replacing Benayoun is an improvement (if we can keep him fit & he doesn't become Kewell mark II).

Shevely & Wilson were all lined up by Benitez and are good youthful additions to the squad and shouold get some time on the pitch this year.

Jovanovic may or may not be a great addition to the squad & Aurellio we know all about.

Hodgson will be less confrontational than Benitez, and hopefully will be able to get some sort of positive reaction from the squad, but are we really in any better shape than last year?

At this stage us making 4th has as much to do with whether Spurs can repeat last years form with more pressure on them and whether Mancini can make the best use of the resourses available to him to get City more consistent.

Given the doom and gloom that's surrounded LFC since the turn of the year, and the additional burden of he financial state of the club, then its fair to say that on paper our window so far doesn't look bad.

The doomsday scenario that we couldn't afford anyone and would have to sell Torres, Gerrard et al to pay debts has not materialised (unsurprisingly!!).

We have signed some good talent at a good price. We have got rid of some obvious deadwood for reasonable prices.

We still have some areas of the squad that need improving but every club is in the same position imo. However, for me the test of whether this is a good, bad or shite window will be down to how the team performs on the park and where we end up in the league. This looks like a good window on paper but as Sheikh said on another thread, paper can be over rated.

Lets see how the team performs and then we can judge.

I'd be very surprised if we sold Mascher for only €15m plus Hleb. The latter can't really be valued at more than about £7m, so we're barely even making our money back there. Given Mascher's reputation, age etc, and the fact that there are now two clubs after him, that really does seem like a shit deal - if it's true.

I guess our need to buy a LB and striker is so pressing that we're being forced into it. Hope there are lots of add-ons, though, if that is the deal.

Hleb is a good player, but it would give us a LOT of skilful but slow attacking midfielders who neither provide real width nor score many goals.
