Back to the topic... It's been effing boss.

I mean Rafa had to go and that happened early on. Who wasn't convinced SG was next? And then Cole! Cole for fucks sake. And then Torres.

Boss.

On paper, our current squad is just like our squad last season, so I don't understand how can you define it as a great transfer window.

Voronin out -> Jovanovic in
Bennayoun out -> Cole in
Riera out ->
Degen out -> (not much difference though)
Dossena out ->
Insua out? ->
Mascherano out? -> Poulsen in

key areas still haven't been addressed.

Did we actually improve?

Lets see... Yossi and Riera have left, we've brought in Joe Cole, Jovanovic and Poulsen. So yeah.

Nice to see you being selective anyway. You've said that Masher and Insua have gone (they haven't yet) but don't seem to be prepared to anticipate that the money we receive from them will go back into addressing the issues you're moaning about, so it's a fairly moot point.

it hasn't been that great so far, we need a left back and a striker who are both worthy plus its been revealed we're paying £60m in interest for the privilege of the yanks hanging on to us for another 6 months

The fact that we managed to hang on to Gerrard and Torres and signed Joe Cole (for free) is good news but that's about it

Spot on.

Plus Torres & Gerrard staying when all the smart money was on losing them, added to the progression of Kelly & Pacheco (even though none of those mentioned are actual transfers) and it's been so much better than I expected I still think I'm dreaming.

We still need a LB then, and player wise we'll be at the same point, except we've promoted Pacheco etc.

I was mildly surprised and pleased that we managed to sign Cole though suspicious that he chose us when he had other options. Underwhelmed by other signings to date, apart from Wilson whom I'm intrigued by as I didn't know Scotland still produced players.

Like the Fianna Fail party once said..

'A lot done, a lot more to do'

Wise words.

If they said it then it's a lie.

Cole for me is great signing and I am very happy and excited about.
Jova I think will be our new voro, he looks like he works bloody hard but I doubt he will have that extra bit of creativity in the final third to be a massive success.
As for Poulsen, I have not seen much of him play but if he is Maschers replacement then it can't be a good thing cos Masher is immense!

We let go of and brought back Aurelio and Insua and Lucas are still here, though we have managed to get rid of Yossi and Riera from the wage bill.

This season will rest largely on keeping players fit and injury free as it was the main reason we fell last season. On top of that its hoping and praying Roy can ignite the football fire inside the likes of Babel and Aqua to get them playing consistantly to their ability as we know they do have great ability just not been able to show it regularily so far.

Which is exactly my point. On paper, our squad still didn't improve from last season. We needed a left back, another striker, a winger last season. We are still asking for the same thing this summer, so how can we say that it's a great transfer window when we haven't actually solve the key issue here? (It's more like 1+1-1 kinda scenario at the moment)

I'll only say it's a great transfer window if our key areas have been resolved.

Jova looks a far far better player than Voronin ever was. Skill on the ball, great strength and he looks very creative and aware of what's going on around him ... he could turn out to be an inspired signing.

Babel - great ability ? He has shown he is not a winger as he finds it extremely difficult to go past a FB, he has shown he is not a striker, he has shown he can't play #10 (and we don't need him there anyway), I really don't know why we keep him in the squad .... hopefully he'll be gone before the transfer window closes. My daughter says he's a thick bugger too - which might explain his dithering / decision making on the pitch.

Keeping Gerrard & Torres alone makes it a great window ...... when all our expectations were on them leaving. It isn't always about which new players you sign. Anyway people keep answering this for you and you still haven't taken it in.

Mascher> Poulsen
Cole> Yossi
Maxi>Riera
Jovanovic>Voronin
Fresh air>Dossena

Of course keeping Gerrard and Torres are crucial to us, so are the other areas that need to be addressed. Which is why I'm reluctant to call it a "great" transfer window as we only solved half of our problems.

I don't think Maxi is a better left winger than Riera, and he's from January transfer window. As for the rest, we should know more by December.

It's probably hyperbole, but i think the reason why so many are calling it a 'great' window is because they're comparing it wih other windows in our very recent history.
