Liverpool have accepted an offer of around £6m from CSKA Moscow for their outspoken midfielder Albert Riera and hope to conclude the sale of Rafael Benítez's critic by the end of this week.

The Spain international is due to return to training at Melwood today having served a club suspension for last week's public criticism of Benítez's management style. Whether the 27-year-old gets as far as the training pitch is debatable, however, with Liverpool now willing to cash in on the marginalised winger and to allow Riera to discuss personal terms with CSKA.

Liverpool are hopeful of a swift deal for Riera, who has cut an increasingly frustrated figure in a season where he has been restricted to 16 appearances and whose desire for first-team football ahead of the World Cup arguably prompted his outburst on Radio Marca. The winger, signed for £8m from Espanyol in 2008, described Liverpool as a "sinking ship" in the interview and was scathing in the assessment of Benítez, who he claimed held a personal grudge against him and had zero dialogue with players.

Russia's transfer window is open until 8 April and Benítez will have made a profit of approximately £12m through sales this season should Riera follow Andrea Dossena and Andrei Voronin out of Anfield. Even that surplus is not guaranteed to be reinvested in the Liverpool squad this summer, however, with Champions League qualification, or the lack of, determining how much can be spent.

The Rhône Group has made provisions for a transfer budget as part of its £100m offer for a 40% stake in Liverpool, with a decision yet to be made by the owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, although Benítez's spending power will be reduced should they fail to secure a top-four finish.

Despite the financial uncertainty at Anfield, Benítez insists he has been encouraged by recent contract talks with Javier Mascherano and is confident the Argentina captain will be the latest component of Liverpool's first-team to commit his long-term future to the club.

"We were talking, progressing and we're closer now. Still we need to talk a little bit but we are closer," the manager said. "It would be very important for the club. We have some important players with some years left on their contracts and this could be another one. It's very important that we're keeping the spine of the team."

This was inevitable at this point, however I'm a bit disappointed with the price. I suppose there's not much leverage when everyone knows you want rid, but there are a number of clubs who would find him useful.

Oh, and if anyone wants another player out by way of their self destruct button, I'll be sure to champion their inclusion on here for a couple weeks.

Oops.

Signed for 8m.. Sold for 6m a season later.. Wouldn't be very good business regardless of the situation.

I guess I feel the same way I've done with a lot of the squaddies Rafa has signed... I'd probably say no given the choice to sign them again, but now they're here, we need to get the most out of them.

Once again, we haven't done that. A fucking shambles of a sophomore season and 6M isn't a good enough compensation at all.

hmm that was faster than expected, just another through rafa's revolving door.

we barely get time to become fond of players he signs anymore

Also, what a fucking joke this bit is:

A profit.

That stuck in my craw as well.

Piss poor bit of business. Let Riera either play his way back into contention or rot his World Cup chances away on the bench. Flog him in the summer. Two million loss? Que pasa?

Related to nothing else at all in this thread: I miss Bellamy.

It affects the 'net spend' (TM), don'cha know?

I liked Riera.

I thought he was very capable and on his day a really deft player.

Sure, he was slow but he compensated that by a superb first touch and good distribution.

Good luck.

He gave us balance and that's about it. I always thought he looked like a bit of a nonchalant prick, he always seemed to grace the pitch with an assumption that he was better than he clearly was.

So taking into account he hasn't really pulled up trees and his age too, hardly surprising we've made a small loss.

I'm more disappointed that we signed him in the first place, that Summer and the £40m spent during it was a fucking joke and has fucked us up royally.

He was the best player we signed that summer too......

Yep, and they've all gone now too, already. Well bar the dodgy Brazilian goalie.

2m to get rid of a cancer is cheap.

On his day he could be decent but you can't go around smacking youngsters and denouncing the Manager.

Off to the frozen North, you div.

There are better left wingers around in football, but unfortunately none of them are in our squad.

I thought we usually had better shape and played better generally when Riera was in the side.

I will be sorry to see him go, as it means we will always have players on the left like Yossi who can't give their best in that position.

as riera packs his bags peatcheo and all the other midgets of the liverpool reserves breathe a huge sigh of relief as the 'terror of melwood' heads for pastures new

Maybe we weared him off too fast?

I thought we signed him for £5.5m? But anyway, I'm glad he's gone purely for that 'sinking ship' comment. I never rated him, apart from his first few games for us. Sure he gave us balance, but he was so slow - of foot and mind - that we often ended up going backwards once he got the ball. As has been said, though, he was our only proper LW so we do need to replace him this summer. Preferably with someone much better.

Adios Steptoe, you were a slow, mediocre left-winger

Our only left- winger

Fortunately we still have Maxi, our slow, mediocre right-winger

Wow, so, in two years...

Bought: Keane, Ngog, Dossena, Riera, Johnson, Kyrgiakos, Aquilani, Maxi

Sold: Crouch, Riise, Keane, Arbeloa, Pennant, Alonso, Dossena, Riera

So we failed to make a purchase we wanted to use for more than a year, and lost about 14 million in the process, while simultaneously failing to replace Riise, Crouch, and Alonso.

I mean, I know we know this all already, but it's simply an incredible failure.

The only decent purchase there is Johnson, but unfortunately he didn't come with a time machine to send him back a year to a team that could play to his strengths a bit.

Gave Pacheco a black eye last week apparently

Not worth starting an new thread for but another bit of transfer news, Jay Spearing is signing on-loan at Leicester tomorrow until the end of the season.

Have G&H just used this as an excuse to cash in on another player, or are they still thinking that Rafa will be in charge next season?

It seems a little strange to sell your best option on the left (on the managers say so), if your going to be getting rid of him in a few weeks time.

They aren't that close to the day to day goings-on at the club, so I doubt they fucking care, and I also doubt that Albert Riera leaving or staying has any bearing WHATSOEVER on Benitez's future.

Finally, this was obviously Benitez's decision. As any fule kno.
