Fulham’s Tom Cairney claims ref Stuart Attwell said Liverpool penalty was incorrectly awarded

Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney has claimed that referee Stuart Attwell told one of his team-mates that Liverpool should not have been awarded what proved a match-winning penalty.
Liverpool won 1-0 at Anfield on Wednesday after Issa Diop was adjudged to have brought down Darwin Nunez, with Mohamed Salah converting from the spot six minutes before the break.

op appeared to misjudge his clearance, but replays cast doubt on the extent of contact between the centre-back and the Uruguay forward.
Speaking to Fulham TV, Cairney said: “To lose to a penalty that wasn’t a penalty is always a kick in the you-know-whats.
“At the time, I wasn’t sure. The ref made a decision, I thought he’d seen contact. I asked him on the pitch, ‘Please just make sure they (VAR) check it’.
He said they checked it, but he said second half to one of our players that it wasn’t a penalty, so it’s frustrating because it goes to other people to make the correct decision.
“Issa Diop hasn’t touched him, Nunez has taken another step and then gone over, and then you lose to something like that at Anfield, which is frustrating when we’re trying to climb as high as we can.”
The Athletic has contacted the Premier League’s referees’ body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited, for comment.
VAR can be used to overturn a subjective decision if a ‘clear and obvious error’ has been identified, but any on-field decision will only be overturned with definitive evidence.
Fulham manager Marco Silva claimed the penalty award was “embarrassing”.
“The way they scored the goal, I have to say that is embarrassing,” he said. “Today in football to give a penalty like that, after the VAR didn’t take that penalty (away), it is difficult to understand.
“I will not say nothing more because after it will be difficult for me and I don’t want to create more problems for me. It is difficult to understand that penalty,” Silva said.
“When Darwin touch the ball he start to dive himself but after he touched his left leg with Issa.
“They are going to say it is harsh but the referee gave and after the VAR cannot take (away). It is always the same conversation. I didn’t speak with the referee at the end or at half-time. I had some words with the fourth official.

“Issa told me that it is clear not penalty. The referee made a mistake and the VAR is there to take that decision and not allow the penalty to go on. That’s clear for me.”
Liverpool opposite Jurgen Klopp said: “The penalty I like a lot because it is a counter-pressing situation; Darwin is fully in the situation and gets a pen, and Mo finishes it off.”

And people wonder why klopp hates refs?

They're shithouse cunts. Either the fulham players are lying, or Atwell is a shithouse.

Paulinha (not sure how you spell his name) was brilliant, had it not for him, we could have scored 2 - 3 goals easy. A few months ago we would have lost this game, and now we're winning.
As long as we win, it puts mental pressure on Newcastle and Man U

Jurgen Klopp believes it is important that Liverpool continue their winning run as they try and create something to build on for next season.
His side’s 1-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield was their fifth consecutive win in a row and means they are now four points away from a Champions League place.

Mohamed Salah’s winner, a penalty in the 39th minute, was his 18th league goal of the season and his manager was pleased after the game that his side have been able to put a healthy winning run together.
Klopp said: “We still have things that we need to improve but if five wins in a row was easy, everyone would be doing it.
“We have to try do something that will bring us higher in the table and something that we can build on next season.
“That is exactly what we are doing at the moment and I am really pleased with that.”
Klopp was delighted with Darwin Nunez’s performance as Liverpool’s central striker with the German comparing the Uruguayan to a “racehorse”.
“Darwin was like a racehorse, really motivated, really on fire,” added Klopp when asked about Nunez’s pressing from a central role.
“Absolutely. I think for us it’s super-important. You could see in the beginning, defending the centre against Fulham is really important because Palhinha is there and that is their connector.
“We were a bit too early out there from Darwin, we tried to fix that, but he was like a racehorse — go, go, go, go for everybody.
“We opened up and that’s where we struggle slightly. We could sort that and apart from that he played a really good game, he was always a proper option for us and we needed that.”
Liverpool are next in action against Brentford at Anfield on Saturday.

Good player, not brilliant.....maybe brilliant at what he does but I only see few traits which is his tough tackling and positionally he's very aware. For the price Fulham paid, it's worked wonders. If it's a choice between him for 50-60m and Palhinha......no brainer for me.

The referee's we have, have no business being in football....there needs to be some kind of football IQ test you pass before you can become a ref.

I don't know why a referee is supposedly giving Fulham players motivation?

He should be suspended.

He broke down our play more times than I'd be prepared to count.
I don't think we should sign him because of his age, and likely asking price. It's what we've been missing from Fabs.

But our play was...fucking crap. We looked like a mix of scared half arsed journeymen put together for the first time.

I remember Ryan Yates at Forest looking like a million bucks doing the same thing.

I haven’t watched it yet - but isn’t it time we started blaming Nunez again?

I was thinking that as Sheffield United were stupid enough to give us 25 for the new Mbappe they might give us 40 for this fucking donkey.

I wonder what would happen if we played diaz as a false 9 on occasion. He has the pace, vision and close control to work there, as well as a rifle of a shot.

If we want to rest gakpo, would the following work?

Nunez/Jota -------Diaz------Salah

I was about to reply to your earlier post with exactly the same point, and you beat me to it. It's worth a try.

Early in the season that would be put down as a good professional win, if we were chasing something at this stage that would be classed as 3 valuable points and move on. End of season, with nothing to chase that was a bore fest. I'd rather a mad reds 4-4 draw than that poo at this stage
You may think there's nothing to chase but most of us haven't given up just yet (and neither has the team) on 4th. Of course our chance is in single digit percentage points but anyway that's why we kept it professional.

My only issue was when we tried to close up shop (going to flat back 4) we actually looked more like conceding than in the previous 75 mins !

TBH i think last night showed that we need to play with a false 9, as that enables the wingers to cut in and create chances for the space created by the 9 dropping deep. Every single one of players is drilled to play that way; why change it for 1 match needlessly? I get to rest Gakpo, but surely we have to then tweak the position of the midfield to get the most out of the chasm of space thats left. Either jones to run more central or play elliott opposite side to drift in.
Or Nunez Left and Diaz comes centre. He loves to run with the ball, is strong in possession and has a great eye for a pass. Playing the 'Gakpo' role could suit him when needs must.

But we did win, no? Them is three points we’d have lost earlier in the season.
