STEWARDS and police were dispatched into the crowd at Goodison Park to find a fan shining a laser pen on the pitch.
Everton FC last night said they had tried to identify the supporter who trained the green dot light at the ball on Wednesday night.
As Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka strode up to take a penalty, which he missed, the laser was seen on the 12-yard spot.
Immediately after the incident, captured by TV cameras, the Blues security tried to find the person responsible.
The club said they sent police officers and stewards into the Gwladys Street End, but catching the culprit proved impossible.
CCTV cameras from the stadium’s control room also surveyed that section of fans.
An Everton spokesman said: “If the laser pen had been used for a second time, further attempts would have used to find the culprit.
“But as this was an isolated incident and was shone at the ball rather than at a player, no further action will be taken.
“Everton believe this sort of action is stupid and the club does not condone of laser pens at football games.”
