Having the trust of Jürgen Klopp has helped Emre Can produce his best performances for Liverpool – and the midfielder is confident of stepping up another level in the new season.

When the Reds returned from their pre-season tour of America in 2014 the German was a recent arrival, shyly finding his way as he got to grips with new surroundings, new expectations and a new language.

Two years on and at the completion of another summer trip to the United States, Can is a changed character. Confidence exudes from him as he speaks quietly, but thoughtfully, in excellent English.
A number of factors have brought the No.23 to this point, not least the appointment of Klopp and the close working partnership the compatriots have built in the past 10 months.

Can told Liverpoolfc.com: “I have a very good relationship with the manager, everybody knows that. He is a very, very good manager and I learn a lot. Every day I learn something new from him.
“For me, it’s very important to have the trust of the manager, and I have his trust. That’s why I can always show my best.

“I want to become better every day. I will try it and we will see what the season will bring. Of course, I want to be better than last season and I want to score more, that’s one target for me. I want to play well.”

Klopp’s infectious manner has inspired all of those around him at Liverpool, with a thirst for hard work underpinning the enormous smile that is so often the default expression on his face.
It has allowed the boss to develop strong connections with the players as he attempts to lead them to success with an enthusiastic approach Can terms ‘positive crazy’.

“Pre-season is a little bit different because he wants us to always work hard,” said the 22-year-old.
“But, of course, he is always smiling off the pitch. I like this kind of presence. It’s always good to have that close to you. That kind of presence can affect you.
“That’s the manager – I always say he’s a little bit ‘positive crazy’. Off the pitch he is a very good guy, everybody knows that he is very close to us.

“He can be very loud – you can see that on the sideline when he is shouting sometimes! It’s important for him that you always give everything.
“If you have the trust of the manager, you will always give everything for him and the club. That’s what we always try to do.”

Can ended 2015-16 in outstanding form, notably returning from an untimely injury earlier than expected to help send the Reds to the Europa League final.

Disappointment followed against Sevilla in Basel but the Germany international felt ‘very good development’ was evident in the team during the closing months of the season.

He therefore looks to the coming campaign as another opportunity to target trophies – ‘it always has to be’ – and, on a personal level, to become more of a leader in the side.
Can added: “I now have more experience and have played in international games. I was one of the new players when I came here two years ago and now I want to lead the team, I want to give my best for the team.

“I want to go my own way as Emre Can. Of course, my target is to become a legend one day.
“I always try to give my best. I want to show the people that I give everything for the club and show myself that I give everything for the club. Of course, it’s not always easy. But I try it.”
As well as the faith of the manager, the midfielder draws on messages received from supporters as extra motivation to move up a gear.

“I heard [about praise from the fans] a lot,” he said. “If I look at my social media I can see it.
“I’m very, very thankful. It always means that you give something for the club. It’s a big honour for me. This year I want to go again and do better than last season.”

Can - I can be a Liverpool leader but I'm no Gerrard yet

Young German wants to add more goals in a season Reds must aim for titles

Emre Can believes he can be Liverpool’s new midfield leader - but admits he is still “far off” the standards Steven Gerrard set in the role.
The young German returned late to Liverpool’s pre-season after a Euro 2016 campaign that saw him start for Germany in their semi-final against France.
The 22-year-old blossomed under Jurgen Klopp last year and is looking forward to a season where he feels the target must be to “win titles”.
Asked about his desire to be a midfield leader, Can said: “Yes of course. I have played a lot of games for Liverpool now and know I am still young but I have to show it on the pitch now.

“I can say I am a leader but you have to show it. Of course we have other leaders like Hendo or Milner. We all want to do it.
“I am like that. I want to be the one pushing the team on of course. As I said I want to show that to everyone.

“I have played plenty of games, I have played in the semi of the Euros and I am confident enough to say I want to go for it, I want to push the team on.”
Many feel Can can eventually develop into the kind of presence in the Liverpool midfield which Steven Gerrard once was but the player himself believes he’s not yet at that level.

“That’s of course a big, big honour. I have a lot of respect for him but I am far off that level he played for Liverpool. I have to go my own way, be Emre Can. I met him in Los Angeles, we have stayed in touch.”

Can certainly didn’t look out of place in that Euro 2016 semi-final against France which Germany dominated but would ultimately lose.
Nonetheless it’s an experience the former Bayer Leverkusen man believes has given him a boost in confidence.

“You feel great to play in big games like that, it’s what you work for, so my confidence is high. We have a very good team and we will see next season what it is but that target has to be to win titles.
“If you play for Liverpool the target always has to be winning titles and it will be the same next season.”

After a good first nine months under Klopp at Anfield and a positive experience in the Euros, could this be the first year we’ll see the real Emre Can?
“I think you did a bit last year but I want to be better each time and again that has to the case. I want more goals for example - always the target has to be improvement. “Everyone knows my relationship with klopp is very, very good, one of the best in the world for me. I think I took a step forward when he came and want to do that again.
“Everyone knows Klopp is a very emotional manager.”

Coach Pep Lijnders revealed “winning the fitness” as a key target for Liverpool this year and Can says the players want to be the best in the Premier League.
“It’s been a very, very tough pre season and our target is to be the fittest team in the league which is why we train so hard and do a lot of runs. It’s very important for us.

“Last season it (his fitness) was very, very good but this season I have only been here for three or four days and am not 100% but that’s normal and we still have two weeks to go.”
Can’s contract with the Reds runs until 2018 and normal club policy would indicate discussions soon on an extension but it is not something the player himself has any concerns about as he continues to enjoy his time at Anfield.
“I still have two years left. There have been no discussions yet. I am enjoying my time here.

Can can be a star. Just needs to stop being so reckless in defence.
I don't know if it is the partnership in midfield with Hendo, Milner etc that hasn't worked, but I have doubts about having him in that DM role.
His pace makes up for his poor positioning at times, but he needs to be more disciplined.

He needs an experienced head to guide him the same way hamann and mcallister guided gerrard in his early days. He has so much potential.

Dont think he believes he's made it yet. Doesnt come across like that to me at least.

He'll develop into a boss player for us.

He is not Gerrard yet? fine line between confidence and arrogance.
You want to be Gerrard? shut the fuck up and perform on the pitch.
Have you considered that he might have been responding to a question by the interviewer with mention of Gerrard?

But don't let that temper your enthusiasm for a character assassination.

You don't think the question was "can you be as good as Gerrard" and he has answered no, not yet? He has not compared himself to Gerrard.

Read between the lines, it's an interview

He says in the interview “I can say I am a leader".
Sorry but he can barely say he's a Liverpool player.
Surely not the needed standard. But that's what you get today, mediocre players believing they are something special since they have inflated wages.

The answer is pretty obvious. He said he can be a leader but he's someway off what many consider to be the most recent benchmark. Besides which, they were talking about the captaincy and leadership, not the quality of the player.

You're taking the point completely out of context.

I guess when he finally decide he's Gerrard, he'll change his name from Emre Can to Emre Am.

That's when we can stone him.
