“I don’t want to transform Daniel into a marathon runner,” Klopp added. "I hope that we defend so smart that we won’t have to always run like devils. I saw we broke some records at Arsenal with running but it is more that you’re always able to make the right decisions. In football, what you don’t have in your mind, you have in your legs. So then you run and have to close the gaps, but it is not always about the highest intensity. I do not want Daniel Sturridge running like whoever. I want to use his skills. I know about his quality. Our game is not a problem for Daniel.”

Yup. In some games we simply don't need massive defensive work rate at the front. As I may have mentioned in Ryan's thread....

It makes perfect sense to play sturridge whenever he's fit against teams we need to break down. Against the four or five teams that we need to outpress then maybe we need more running, but despite the impression that everyone has he really put 's shift in & in doing so stretches defences which in itself is a very accompaniment to pressing the shit out of sides, so it's not like he's a negative in any games.

The problem for me is that our team play appears less effective when he is leading the line. It might be that the stats show that that isn't the case and is just my perception, but I still can't shake the feeling that we look less fluid when he is up top.

For a long time I'd have agreed with that, but towards the end of last season he was putting in performances which showed he can play his part in a wider team display and not just be the point man at the sharp end of it. There's a balance to be struck here and the effort to do so is worth it for a talent like Sturridge's.
