Kenny Dalglish admits he wanted to take over from Rafa Benitez as Liverpool boss when the Spaniard left Anfield this summer.
Former Reds star Dalglish was the last man to bring the league title to the club, in 1990, before quitting the post a year later.
And, in his new book, Dalglish reveals he was ready to make a sensational return to the Anfield hot-seat, but was left disappointed when the club opted to bring in Fulham manager Roy Hodgson.
“
I wanted the job. I couldn't miss the opportunity

Kenny Dalglish
“When it was clear Rafa was going, Christian Purslow asked me to get involved in the selection process for the next manager,'' Dalglish wrote.
"I had to let them [the board] know my real views. I wanted the job. I couldn't miss the opportunity. One day, I was in a meeting with Christian and the chairman, Martin Broughton, and I formally put my name forward.
"'We don't want you, Kenny', came the reply from Christian and the chairman. Fine. That's their prerogative. They explained they had different plans for me, a position with greater longevity."

Would have been interesting I suppose

Everyone knew he wanted the job, but reading that, especially Broughton and Pursssslow's involvement, makes me seethe.

if you believe some idiots on here they'll tell you kenny wasn't given the job to protect his reputation with us.

Yeah board members have no right to appoint managers.

Oh...

[/quote]

They've no right to appoint Budgie over Kenny. They've no right to do anything football-related really.

I think they had a point. Brendan would currently be wanting to shit down his japper.

Yah, Brendan turning on King Kenny ... Thank the dear lord for Purssssssssssslow

Could that mean Roy will only have a short tenure?

Broughton and Pursssssslow would never have risked appointing Kenny, simply because they know how powerful, respected and loved he is, and that would be unconscionable in a Liverpool manager under them. He'd be too influential.

Not necessarily (managers tend to stick around for shorter periods than backroom people anyway) but it's an interesting thought.

It just means any manager is on borrowed time from the start.

It's hardly likely to be a really long tenure is it? He'll be looking like fucking Davros.

Would like to think that Roy is only a stop gap measure until the new owner comes in, whenever that will be.

Exactly, Kenny's looked at as Liverpool royalty and he's going to be linked with the club long after any manager has come and gone.

You're probably bang on the money about that, but what would have happened had Kenny kicked up a fuss?

There was still a job to do and it mght have resulted in even more discord.

Kenny would have taken it far more angrily, but in the end he'd still have to do the job as best he could.

We're in a financial catastrophe that either manager would have to work around.

I said at the time it was non-football people making a football decision that has nothing to do with football.

I was right then, and I'm right now

Having Dalglish inside the tent, rather than pissing into it is vital for Broughton and Purssslow, but giving him *too* much power was never going to happen

all this seem temporary anyway, once new owners come in they'll want their own man in charge, (and though I'm ashamed to say it*), thank goodness for that.

*well, it's not like I wanted roy in the first place.

I think it is very likely that Roy will replace Capello in 2012 anyway, unless Harry beats him to it

Not sure about that. If it had been this summer then yes I suspect he would have done, but if he fucks up at Liverpool that is not really a great addition to his CV is it?

Things can change very very quickly with football managers.

I doubt the FA would want Redknapp would they?

Correct, but no different from any previous Liverpool managerial appointment.

Football people are generally amongst the stupidest out there so i don't really have an issue with intelligent non football people making decisions.

I banged on all summer about the Lyon way being the preference for how a football club should be run - a mix of football and non football people making decisions together - and that appears to be the way we're heading.

Already at this stage we can point to transfers this summer with involvement from kenny, purslow and roy.

Kenny's comments give me the impression that he's effectively operating in a Director of Football capacity and that's a very postive move for me.

Yes. And to be fair they did appear to try to have non-footballing (Purslow and Broughton) and footballing (King Kenny) people making the choice but then Kenny decided he wanted it and stepped down from that group!

I'm not actually sure who else could have made the decision anyway. Carra? Gerrard? The SOS cunts?

Doesn't 'Dagshit' have more of a ring to it?

He said he wanted the job at the time, so what's new?

I'd have took Dalglish over Benitez at the time, but Hodgson was my preferred candidate over the two because he was in the game.

out of interest, how do you think Roy's recent experience in club management will make much of a difference?

It hasn't done so far, although granted its early days.

I just think it's really important. He'll know every player he comes up against, the tactics of each squad, etc, etc. He's also widely connected in the game which helps with scouting and so forth. I'm not saying Kenny has been living in a cave all these years, but it was an issue for me.

Cole, Mereles and Konchesky all look like they'll be decent signings at this point, which is a small indication, but like you say, time will tell.

I fully admit if I'd grown up in a different era I suspect I would have been in the Dalglish camp - but I'm still far more optimistic than most with regards to Hodgson. This season we'll still finish 5-7th, but if we get new owners and they keep faith with him, I think he can get us back into the top four and competing with the big boys again. This is a year of stabilisation - one to ensure we don't slip further backwards and one to boost up squad moral. If we get new owners the stakes will rightly be raised.
