Keepers

Karius has an open invitation from Serie C and Rimini. Their owner said he could spend a year there to get back into "shape"...

I'm not sure Oblak is the right type of keeper for us. Yeah he's a great commanding keeper with excellent shot stopping skills but his distribution and kicking aren't his strong points. The money would be better spent on Alison

Do we concede our goals because our keepers have not been good at distribution, or is it because they're not good enough at shot stopping or commanding the area? I say the latter. Look at the goals we have conceded this year. Our biggest problem has been a higher than average conversion rate of shots to goals by the opposition. He can learn to act as a sweeper keeper, but i'm not bothered if he is only ever average at it. We're not a City passing teams to death with the keeper needing to be an amazing passer. If he saves everything he's meant to save along with a percentage of 'how the fuck he get that?', added to bossing crosses (all things he does amazingly well), then it is a no brainer.

Oblak would be fantastic. But he'd cost what, 80-90 mill £? Thats a lot of cash for a GK

But then again, you can make a strong case that GK's are undervalued in the market relative to their importance to the team and results. Goals are the most important thing in football, so why aren't players on the last line of defense valued as much as strikers?

On that note, 5 EPL clubs – a quarter of the league! – have voted for their goalkeeper as the player of the season. Perhaps with football becoming more open and attacking, the importance of goalkeepers is actually growing. More and more teams, particularly top teams, prefer to commit numbers forward and defend in a way that inevitably leads to defensive breakdowns, where the skill of the goalkeeper becomes the difference between winning and losing.

Good point. Looking at Utd, you could say De Gea is their most important and most valuable player.
If Oblak can have a similar effect on our team then you could justify that fee. He could be our nr 1 GK for 10 years.

I wonder if Borussia Dortmund would be interested in signing either Karius or Mignolet. They are in dire need for a new GK after their #1 Burki spectacularly self-destructed last season. Karius due to his age would probably fit better into their development model, but they did enquire about Mignolet not long ago.

If we manage to sell both Karius and Ming for £20-25M each, that would make £80M+ for the likes of Alisson/Oblak far more palatable.

were more likely to get that kind of money for the pair.

I posted some stats on shot-stopping before. Here's some on distribution and sweeper-keeping (EPL only):

If you click on the bottom-right picture in the 2nd tweet, you will see proof that Karius has been the best at sweeper-keeping in the league this season. Obviously on distribution Ederson and Bravo are dominating the competition.

Trouble is , if we sign Oblak, some bellend is going to make up a song about him based on a shit Beatles number.

Yes, I do realise the last three words form a tautology
I've said it before, nothing would make me happier than signing Jan Oblak, except, signing him and him getting a song to the tune of Back In Black, by AC DC.
[clap] [clap clap] [clap clap] Na na na na na na na na...
Jan Oblak,
Is at the back,
Been too long, now it's coming back.... you get the drift.

all that tells me is that Sam Jackson needs to get out more

Funny that you mention that; half of the Twitter comments under his posts are things like "do you have a girlfriend?" and "are you a virgin?" But I think he's actually gets paid to do this stuff.

I agree. Plus, as Ruud Gullitt said "a goal keeper is a goal keeper because they can't play football."

I bet Bruce Lee could have been turned into a decent keeper. Before he died that is. And obviously not coached by John Achterberg.

Barring unforeseen injuries and loss of form, i think Oblak pretty much guarantees us top 4 for the next season in the same way De Gea has done for the Mancs.

Rui Patricio is gonna terminate his contract after Sporting caused problems in his transfer to wolves, which was only on the cards because Mendes got involved and his transfer to Napoli fell through.

Don't know anything about him other he plays for Portugal, he's 30, Napoli wanted him, therefore he's better than anything we've had for ages

Dont mean to be a dick but United have finished outside the top 4 three times in the last 5 years

Don bollocks claim we have made a €90m bid for Jan Oblak "to test the waters"

Eh? It'd cost €10m more to bypass the "test the waters" stage. Surely €60m is testing the waters?
