Legend of the game. Loved watching him play.

But was appointed U23 coach 9 days ago - his first coaching gig. And has not taken charge of a training or coaching session in his life.

Interesting to see how this pans out.

Good luck to him but... wow. This is so unusual for Italy, they place a lot of emphasis on the coaching education and gradual progression - I can’t remember the last time a big player without coaching experience got a big job there. It's a lot more common in England.

Sarri win the league with their lowest point total in 9 years.
They'll go for 10 straight with a guy whose never coached ... they should have gone for pep ... a real challenge for him.

It depends who he gets as his coach/assistant. What a player he was.

Personally I think that's the problem with Gerrard - great players can be effective as managers, and act like magnets (at least for a while) in terms of attracting top players, but they need a really impressive coach working underneath them, and ideally a shrewd assistant, too. Gerrard went for mates - I love McAllister, but he's never going to bring great tactical nous to the table, and the rest of the coaching set up were mainly mates with whom Steven grew up. That's just about okay for the Scottish league, but in spite of all the romantic dreams that still continue today, it will never work as a follow-on from Klopp.

So another manager Chelsea had ruined? Sarri was doing a decent job for Napoli, made a big money move to Chelsea and did try and challenge for the title a bit until everything went unhinged.

"Warming up is just masturbation for conditioning coaches"

At least we'll get some decent quotes.

To be fair I'd let them ruin me in every way possible for the money he got.

Some "European football expert" (whatever that is when it's at home) on TalkSh!te the other day put the blame on Sarri, saying that he has a history of falling out with big name players and that this was what put the skids under him at both Chavski and Juventus.
