for pity sake; WE. ARE. NOT. IN. THE. CHAMPIONS. LEAGUE.
factor that in before the obligatory, 'we get down and they get mata' comments.

Is that our excuse now for not going in for good players at seemingly good value?
So let's not even try to sign any more players from any clubs who are in Champions league.
[/quote]
Is it really that hard to fathom? Who says we haven't tried? Besides the players we've signed, do you really think we've not been in for anyone else and been knocked back for whatever reason, either by the club or the player?

Yes, it is, too simple and defeatist to suggest we shouldn't be going in for players because they play for champion league clubs and the clubs involved in signing for the are champion league club.
I don't know Mark in regards to your second questions, I suggest you fwd that to the club secretary.
My point was in regards to the transfer policy, not specifically attached to Aguero and Mata but let me explicitly state my point:
If our policy is we don't go in for players who are in champions league then it's wrong.
How unambitious is that?? If we think Suarez is an exception then that's load of rubbish.
Even in this dark age soulless football players there must be few out there who can see the future liverpool offers rather than a one season of champions league football which ulimately involves them being spanked by Barca anyway.

I'm guessing, as I've said a few times, that our policy this Summer is based on hitting the ground running in the league with players who won't take time to settle etc. I'm not suggesting we don't try or that we haven't tried to get players who are more likely to be interested in CL football. How many links have there been this Summer? I'd wager a fair percentage of those players are exactly the type we're referring to. As a club what are we supposed to do if we do approach for these players and lose out? We're hardly likely to say, "oh well we tried to get Mata but he wanted CL football", from a PR sense it would be ridiculous. We haven't said anything until we've signed players, so no one really knows the ins and outs and who we've tried to negotiate with and rightly so.
As Vlad pointed out a week or so ago, perhaps it is a sensible approach and time will tell whether it's the right one, but you can see the logic in trying to step up a couple of tiers to get back amongst the pack, by buying weathered, hungry Premiership players. Players who might play for us for a number of years and provide a basis to then add more players akin to Suarez. I'm not saying it's the right way or the wrong way, but you can see pros and cons. Look at how much City have spent on flash signings and as a team they haven't nearly justified the outlay.
