Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

It's a bit rich Ryan asking what the above means when your own post above it consisted of a lot of random words in capital letters.

I don't overally like Enrique either because I haven't gotten over the stigma of him being a bit shit in his first year. I didn't see him in the championship and only started paying attention to him when we we're linked to him but from what i've heard/read he is a player on the up.

My take on him is that he has bags of pace, he is rarely beaten down the line, he puts himself about and likes to gallop forward. He will carry the ball into dangerous positions ala Johnson. Now i'm not sure if having two attacking full backs is ideal as we might be left exposed but it will be nice knowing we have two very mobile and attack minded full backs.

This leads me to question whether Enrique can actually defend or not? I've heard he had vastly improved this part of his game but I would have slight worries about his concentration levels. In the times I have watched him play I noticed him to be a bit self indulgent in his play, a bit like Glen was until he moved to the left. I'm sure Clarke will iron out any defensive issues if they arise.

It looks like he has signed so i'm going to support it, just like i've done with Downing. Neither we're my first choice by any means. I'm a huge Fabio Aurelio fan but sadly he's made of glass. We need a new LB and if Enrique come for anything in and around 6-8 million then it's a good deal. Contraeo went for millions to Real, Vargas was over priced and likes playing as a LW, Baines was unrealistic due to his current club, Perrera's (sp?) stock doubled in the last year and I can think of any more options off the top of my head. Enrique will probably get his call up to the national side once he moves to us. Yes, it's a what if scenario but I think he's next in line. Capedevila is nearly 35, Arbeloa is the utility player covering both flanks and that leaves Albiol (who rathers CB) and the bilbao player who I can't recall right now. Well, unless i'm forgetting someone.

We need cover if not a first choice LB and who know's Enrique might suprise us Ryan. Here's hoping he can.

Aye, I hate when posters land themselves in a position where their outlook is so extreme that they are bound by duty to stick to it.

cf Brendan with Lucas, Modo with Aqulani etc.

Poor Ryan will be confused watching Downing, Aqualani (if he stays this year) and Enrique playing for us. He will obv. want them to succeed being a Liverpool fan 'n all but then at the same time he seems to fucking 'hate' them. I don't hate any of our players but I do hold a disliking to Skrtel.
I dont think he hates them. He just thinks we can do better than them. I agree to an extent i dont think we have spent the 100m wisely, but as soon as a player signed i put that behind me and just hope they will be legendary for us.
I think the only poster we have had (Kanwar and the mentals like Sven etc aside) who would actively want a player to fail is Brendan.
Ryan isnt like that at all and when the football starts he will give Enrique et al there due. Im sure of it.
He's just venting.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Downing's gonna be a good signing for us, you can just see it in his play, I think he's come on leaps and bounds a looks a threat whenever he has the ball (in terms of delivery). If we can get a bit more quality either wide right or in attack and sort out the defence then we're well on our way, not a 'million miles away' like Ryan said in one of the other threads. I get his frustration though, but we're not that far off. The frustration is if we fail to sort out our obvious problems again while having the cash there to do so.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

@ Andy, Yep, agree with that bro. I do think that the more you argue/debate against a player the more of subconscious hatred you build up against him. On the other hand, Modo is ruining Alberto for me. I love Aqualani but Modo won't give it a rest for two min about him. No offence like Modo. 😉

EDIT: Its nearly 2am here and i don't think i'm making any sense. ha. I'm off fuckers.

When we went into the window I'd have said, in order of priority:

LW
CB
LB
ST
RW
CM

We haven't signed Enrique yet. The one I'm most happy with is Downing, I think he's gonna prove alot of people wrong, but we still lack depth in key areas, we could do with another striker (especially if N'Gog does go) and centre back should have been one of the top priorities.

Ok, I guess I'm getting at the centre back issue which I think was a big priority (and I'm unconvinced that Cahill or Dann are the answer). As for the striker thing with Kuyt, he's a good foil for Suarez and a similar alternative to Carroll but we still lack a more predatory finisher and would have been worth taking a punt on a young up and coming player. Kuyt is worth about 10 a season, Suarez for all his ability doesn't always look the clinical finisher and Carroll has had injury issues and it's difficult to predict how many he'll score. That said I do think the goals are spread more evenly, but I still think we could do with a plan B, the plan A seems Carroll or Kuyt with Suarez.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Not overly excited but I can get on board with this.

I've seen him have some very good games last season, but I've also seen him being very meh. Hopefully, it is an issue only of consistency which can be ironed out by Clarke and co.

To the contrary, I think we have a Plan A and a Plan B no which we've not had since Torres joined. We have Suarez and Carroll and Suarez and Kuyt. Two very different approaches to attack which was evidenced at the end of last season. With Downing in the side I think Carroll and Suarez will become a lot more effectual that last season, and we all saw what Kuyt and Suarez did again United.

I think Downing and Aurelio/Enrique and going to form a monster left flank this season.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I've never been overly impressed with Enrique to be honest but on the other hand I don't feel I've seen enough of him to give a fair valuation. I'll keep my fingers crossed he's improved as much as people seems to believe if we do indeed get him.

But the partnerships of Suarez/Kuyt and Suarez/Carroll are much the same really, at least on paper, Kuyt and Carroll can do similar jobs. The issue is if we lose Suarez for any length of time, our attack become static and one dimensional, which is where it would be useful to have another player to come in. Even in pre-season without Suarez you can see the same issue, to the extent that when N'Gog has come on it's almost been refreshing to see a bit of movement in attack.
You're right, the loss of Suarez is too huge for us at the moment and we really need to shift this reliance we seem to grow to players. Suarez isn't as important to us as Torres has been in the past, however if Carroll doesn't hit form, we'll be lost without him(Suarez). Thankfully however I can see Carroll maybe not being Suarez levels of great, but I can see him being in good form this season. Downing I'm sure is going to be fantastic for us, and this will help the entire team. You mention N'gog, and I'm glad, I like him for what he is, he's a fantastic 4th choice striker, which will always help us.

Kuyt's going to have another great year this year too. He's a player that really thrives when playing with good players around. (i know how obvious that sounds) He's such an intelligent and tenacious player, that when teams are worrying about Downing, Suarez, Carroll, Gerrard etc, he'll sneak in whilst they are not watching, and he'll cause a lot of damage, however he's not one to do it on his own ala Suarez. I think what you said early on hits the nail on the head. We're going to have a lot of 10+ players this season. Kuyt, Suarez and Carroll will all score 10+ in the league, probably Gerrard too if he stays fit. As opposed to one 20+ plus like Torres.

Like I said before, the worry still is the reliance on Suarez, if he is out, the team could collapse around him, despite in my opinion us having more than enough players around him to cause damage. It's all down to the form of Downing, Adam and Carroll for me. These are the crucial elements, if these guys even just get into good form, we'll be laughing and be able to hurt teams in many different ways. This game on Saturday should be a great one for us to watch to gauge this. With Suarez not being there, how these three characters are able to pick up the slack will be crucial for our campaign.

In my opinion of course.

I actually don't have much against any of those buys although LB could certainly have waited in my eyes (LB. Aurelio / Johnson / Flanno / Robinson. RB. Kelly / Johnson / Flanno). Maybe it would have been much better - given our current depth in MF - to have spent the money, early on, on Cahill instead of Henderson. A replacement for Gerrard, even as an understudy, seems premature.

Don't agree with that at all. In fact I think Carroll has it all to prove. We did extremely well without Carroll during the time he was injured as Suarez & Kuyt formed an excellent partnership.

cf Brendan with Lucas, Modo with Aqulani etc.
