Yes, good post Wiz. I tend to agree, I don't think we are as desperate for a left back as we think we are. We were 12 months ago, but we now find kids have emerged and Magic is possibly better on the left than on the right.
I don't really rate Aurellio defensively though, apart from being made out of Lladro, I don't think he reads the game like a defender ir is great in the challenge.
I think Enrique would strengthen us, but as Wiz says if it stops us buying another decent forward and CB , I would leave it,

I don't think the signing would curtail our ability to get a CB, not at 6m.

also;

LB
johnson
aurelio
robinson
insewer

CB
carra
skrtel
agger
the greek

both positions are equally as strong or as weak, depending on your point of view.

You have to play two CB's though. It is also far more important position of the two, you can get away with an average LB but you hardly ever get away with an average CB.

LB
johnson - ideally would be on the right
robinson - a reserve
aurelio - made of cheese
insewer - fucking rubbish

CB
carra - aging
skrtel - positionally suspect/poor header of the ball
agger - made of cake
the greek - rubbish (although a decent header of the ball)

both positions need address and whilst you can place priority on the centre of defense, LB is equally as needy.

You have made a pretty fundamental error in your ratio's there Spidey.....you only need one LB from four , you need two CB's from four.
Lets remove the cheese from both, that leaves you three LB covering, one a current England player and another a very good prospect coming through, and one we were hoping was a good prospect coming through who (IMHO opinion) was badly handled and could yet still do it.. and three CB's two of which are old warhorses that have seen their best days behind them, and one is an accident waiting to happen every game.
We need a CB more, but I agree , I don't think it would alter the budget.

that's a fair point, vlad. we have 4 players covering 2 positions but at LB we have 4 players covering one position.
if we could get assurances that aurelio could handle one game a week and no cup competitions then I would rest a little easier.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I've always said that Aurelio is our best fullback when fit. Problem is, he almost never is.
We shouldn't neglect that he'll turn 32 in a month and this is probably his last season at Anfield.
Robinson isn't imo ready to take that spot full time. I think it's important that we buy Enrique.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I'm pretty sure we'll buy a LB AND a CB, so all this hand-wringing about which position is more important will end up being irrelevant. The owners have already shown their willingness to spend big this summer in order to overhaul the squad and get us back in the CL. It would make no sense to stop now, with two positions in need of new players, especially having spent 20m on Henderson, who will probably spend half the season on the bench.

If nothing else, our bid for Phil Jones proves we are actively looking for a new CB.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

The trouble with that is that our bid for Jones was a while ago. We've spent more money since then and none of us knows how loose FSG will keep the purse-strings, or how much the situation may be affected by the apparent difficulty we're having in moving some of our dead wood out of the club.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I tend to agree with Wzardry. A commanding CB would make all the difference. I don't know much about Dann but it seems that he is Kenny's man. 6M for a marginal difference at LB for a decent option is hardly earth shattering but worth getting anywhere. We need depth in the dquad and Enrique would at least be a LB that's an improvement on Insua.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

the question we shpould be asking ourselves is not is Enrique and imporvement on all the other shite leftbacks we've had over the last few years (fit or otherwise), but is he better than the last half-decent laft back we had?

So... ask yourself, is Enrique going to be better than Riise?

If he's not, then why the fuck are we wasting time chasing after him?

If he is, then why the fuck has he been playing for Newcastle... and why is he still there?

We need both, I think half the point is that if we're in a position where we can either spend big on a left back, big on a centre back, or plug a gap on both, the right option will always be to spend big on a CB, we need one, desperately. While we need a left back aswell in the longterm, it's easier for us to paper over for now and perhaps our deficiencies there might not be so magnified if there weren't issues in the middle of the defence.

Overall the back four needs a revamp, but we need to start with a structure and that starts in the middle.

Why were Finnan and Riise at Monaco and Fulham?

Newcastle are apperantly close to signing Pieters from PSV as a replacement.

Some Newcastle fans are saying Enrique has agreed terms and that it will be announced soon.

Could have some legs now.
