Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Also Telegraph claiming that Newcastle very close to wrapping up deal for Dutch left-back (Pieters?).

take it or leave it enrique. if he leaves it then it's no loss as he is clearly motivated by money.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

That Stephen Martin fella is probably the most reliable one on twitter.

There is also a rumour about Insua being involved in the deal, not sure if we have to pay more than 6 mill if thats the case though..

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Nothing to do with this debate whatsoever as Im not arsed about Enrique really to be honest but Hansern is a fine poster.

Hansern and Modo are both fine posters but I don't get why they're so convinced that Enrique will improve us. His previous record is hardly outstanding and if they're basing their opinions on seeing him 6 or 7 times last season then I'd be reluctant to join them in the Enrique love-in.

I'm so fed up with the plethora of Shite > Average left backs that we've had to endure over the years so maybe I'm overly cynical but my gut feeling is that Enrique will be another who will be a whole pile of Meh.

Thank you Dave, thats very nice to hear.

Pesam;

I'm convinced he's the best option available and a great purchase for 6 mill £.
He was poor in his first season, but improved greatly in the Championship and last year he was one of the best full backs in the league and therefor I'm convinced he can push further on if he's signed. He's got great pace and will fit in very nicely in a pass and move team.

The reason I've been spending a lot of time posting in this thread the last few days has more to do with Ryans arguments ;D

depends of people's defination of 'meh'. a lot of people thought arebeloa was 'meh' and I thought he as excellent.

Fair enough, I way away last week so missed most of your debate with Ryan and can't be bothered looking back at it - although I'm sure it was entertaining 🙂

Neil, Arbeloa might be excellent now but he wasn't for us although he was good. I'd be pleasantly surprised if Enrique is as good a left back for us as Arbeloa was at right back i.e. consistently good.

I meant for us, not real madrid. I absolutely loved the guy. so enrique could come in and do a consistent (but not spectacular) and he'd improve us.

I think he was consistently good and I suppose a case can be made that a player who is consistently good is an excellent player and yes he was very underrated by some.

We replaced Arbeloa with Johnson and immediately began hemorrhaging goals. There were obviously other factors involved there (Insua for one), but it certainly wasn't coincidental. Arbeloa was solid and unspectacular but he was a fine defender, and under-appreciated by many during his time here.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Is Ryan's silence proof that his argument was clown worthy?

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

All of this would be moot if Aurellio could stay fit as Aurellio is a better player, sadly he is never fit for long so my point is also moot.

FWIW i think Enrique is actually worth the moeny we are looking to pay for him which makes a nice change from our earlier signings, he is good passer of the ball and has good pace also, i don't see why Ryan hates him so much either as the wage argument is spurious, he can sign on a free in six months for another team and obviously knows he can earn more than what we are seemingly offering.

Completely agree, especially point 1.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

aurelio is an excellent player. that pass for downing v valencia is right out of the very top drawer, brilliant vision and the guy is a fullback. if he wasn't made out of cheese there would be no need of enrique.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

In 2008/09 (I think) when he actually stayed fit for a few months, Aurelio was probably the best left back in the league. Scored excellent free kicks against Scum and Chavs, too

Not he wouldn't!!

That's where this whole LB clamouring desperation crumbles. I have no problem with us signing a new LB - so long as it doesn't impede our attempts to sign players in the positions we really need. We've been struggling in the air at the back for a couple of seasons - no surprises there when we've just lost one of the great arial commanders after 10 years service. The surprise comes when we don't address the issue. The stupefying amazement comes when people start claiming another position in the backline is the priority.

We finished last season with a strong performer at LB. Is he everybody's ideal image of a champion LB? Of course not. Neither is Lahm. Are there better LB's out there? Of course there are. But just because there are better LB's out there doesn't mean the position must be filled at all costs. Enrique, when I've seen him, has been a pretty fair player. Nice pass, reasonable pace, iffy positioning, solid enough tackle. The question is, does he provide a lot more than what we finished last season with? The answer is no. In which case we're paying out 6m for a player who might offer a little improvement on what we've currently got. That's not the way we're going to bridge the gulf between us and the title.

Meanwhile we have a number of commanding CB's around who would be significant improvements on what we put out on the pitch last season. They could address an area where we've been giving goals away like candy for a couple of seasons. That's where our priorities have to be. By all means sign another LB - sign two of them and add another midfielder; we won't care so long as we get the centre of defense sorted out.

My position would probably change if we had someone like Evra available for the LB spot. But while he's good Enrique is no Evra and nothing suggests he ever will be. We need to get the fatal problems in our team worked out; then we can start on the cosmetic surgery with what's left over.

A good post as always, Wizardry.

CB has in my opinion been the biggest priority of all positions even before the signings made this summer. The only reason I can think of why it hasn't been addressed yet is that Kenny & co too consider it to be the critical position and want to get it absolutely right. If none of the top targets are available/are being priced out then I kind of agree with not settling for second best and waiting for January to see if the market is better.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

we'll definitely buy a CB by the end of the month

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I disagree with wiz' post. a consistent left back who can be relied upon to start week in week out would improve us. aurelio wont start every week, johnson is a right back and robinson is a reserve. our big problem currently is we mix and match far too often, I'd bet money that if we could pick a consistent back line we would automatically start conceeding less as they gel and start to understand each and their positions.
obviously buying a top class centre back will improve us further but we need a left that will first choice and can be relied upon to start most games.

as I said earlier, this forum was 'meh' on arbeloa and I thought he was excellent, THAT'S what we need especially if johnson is going to spend half the match in the opposition half.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Yes, good post Wiz. I tend to agree, I don't think we are as desperate for a left back as we think we are. We were 12 months ago, but we now find kids have emerged and Magic is possibly better on the left than on the right.
I don't really rate Aurellio defensively though, apart from being made out of Lladro, I don't think he reads the game like a defender ir is great in the challenge.
I think Enrique would strengthen us, but as Wiz says if it stops us buying another decent forward and CB , I would leave it,

regards
