Jan window - whats needed?

The midfield has to be a priority.

I've always thought the defence would tighten up with a new system and so it's proved. We can get by without another CB until the summer where I hope we can swap Lovren out.

Enrique needs to be fucked off and a new LB brought in.

A decent CM/DM needs to replace Allen. Schnerderlin would have been perfect.

A winger

Whats needed overall.....

2x Wingers

2x CM

1x CB

1x LB

1x Striker

Hopefully Klopp gets shot of some of the dead wood over Winter and Summer. Allen, Lovren, Enrique, Balotelli and some of those out on loan who never even got a fair crack of the whip under Rodgers.

There are a few decent players that contracts run out in 2016 if they are not extended.

Matip, Xabi Alonso, Handanovic (although he is sadly close to signing an extension), Rafinha, Feghouli.

GK – don't need to think that about until summer.
CB – we have no quality apart from the first-choice pairing of Skrtel and Sakho (who is injury-prone). Definitely the #1 area of concern for January and an area where we could try to improve the first team, not just the squad.
FB – even with Flanno coming back we are short of cover, need one more full-back.
DM/CM – unlike most posters I don't think there is a pressing need in this area. Between Hendo, Milner, Can, Lucas, Allen and Rossiter we are well-covered, especially if Klopp plays a system with 2 midfielders.
AM – a speedy winger could be useful (bringing back Markovic could solve that if we can negotiate with the Turks), other than that we have more than enough options for Klopp to try and sort through until the summer.
ST – everything depends on Sturridge's fitness. If he doesn't show by January that his problems are behind him, by all means we need to buy another striker.

So we need in January:
  • 1 top-quality CB
  • 1 back-up/rotation full-back
  • Bring back Markovic or buy another young speedy winger
  • A striker if Sturridge cannot get fit

There are obvious concerns around our injury prone strikeforce and our error prone defense but i think its probably too early to say who will and wont make it under Klopp. When Rodgers joined he wanted rid of Hendo, by the time he left hed made him captain.

Most people were hoping for Moreno to be sold in the summer and hes been one of our better players so far.

Players we have written off could well end up surprising us and end up becoming useful players. The likes of Lovren, Allen, Origi will all get the chance to prove themselves. Im hopeful Klopp can form a competent defensive unit out of what we have rather than needing to run out and buy another CB.

Got to disagree with Rurik's otherwise excellent post regarding a DM. For one thing I disagree with the DM/CM classification - the two are not identical and for me we need a dedicated DM, for now at least. Secondly, in terms of a DM the only competent one we have is Lucas (whose own form has been changeable before) and having just one option for any position is not enough.

Plus I'd argue it's the one position that will see the most benefit for single outlay, as is evidenced by the difference in our play when Lucas comes into a game. No matter what you rate him, he's not a top quality DM, but makes a massive difference to all our play, so more quality there should help even more

Some brave and healthy players with a fierce will to win. Getting hugged by a bearded bloke shouldn't be an issue for them either.

Gerrard's LA Galaxy were dumped out of the play offs last night. Not sure if there's anything else going on, or if he'd even interest Klopp.

No. No. No. No. And, no.

That's not cos of his playing ability, which is a different argument, but because there's enough of a circus around the managerial appointment as it is, we don't need to create another media circus around Gerrard returning.

I'd say a youngster can be understudy at full-back.
There are a couple out on loan in addition to the lad who played last night.
Markovic should at least be given a go before we sign another winger.
I do think we need a quality midfielder though. DM/CM, in the Schneiderlin mould.
Agree that we need a CB.
Dependent on Sturridge, well I think we can already now say we cannot depend on him. We need to sign a striker.
Origi looks not to be ready yet, so he needs to go on loan again so that he gets games when a new striker is signed.

I think it's even more pressing we get in another top-class midfielder If Klopp plays with his preferred 4-2-3-1. You can cover up the deficiencies in quality with an extra body but it definitely shows in a two-man midfield.

Gerrard's LA Galaxy were dumped out of the play offs last night. Not sure if there's anything else going on, or if he'd even interest Klopp.

Ever since Gerrard joined Galaxy, there have been several articles on the same point - lack of balance in midfield, soft center which does not provide adequate defensive cover.

"But the Galaxy have lacked balance between attack and defense since the duo's arrival. Once opponents detected that Gerrard often left Juninho to fend for himself defensively in the center of midfield, they started attacking the soft middle, forcing Gonzalez and Leonardo to step further up field and thus create even more space for teams to exploit."

If Gerrard comes in on loan, there will be a bit of a fuss in the media if he is not played anywhere other than his favored central midfield role. Given that MLS teams are able to exploit that weakness, we will lose that defensive shape which Klopp has been working on. The last thing Klopp needs is an additional headache of accommodating Stevie G into the current team.

Top of the list must be a new keeper. One that can act as a sweeper behind the defense. Klopps system is built around a high defensive line and a compact team that can press high up the pitch and win the ball back early.

Won't work with Mignolet as our keeper. A new keeper is a must signing as soon as possible. Now Mig is slowing our play down because he is the main reason to why we must play the defensive line so close to our own box. We will almost always be up against an organized defense because we must play our defense so deep.

The main reason to why we score so few goals.
