"I've Got Enough" - Rafa

Status
Not open for further replies.
rafa deserves a lot praise. who could have predicted what rafa did with torres. its such a gimme now but in AM torres was used as second striker and had average scoring stats, rafa bought him played him as an out and out striker and turned him into argubly the best striker in world football. rafa doesn't huge credit for that.

Exactly Asim. Make or break season for Rafa methinks.
What's going to happen if he doesn't "make" it next season? The club is not going to sack him and his staff and pay their contracts up in full.

'Make or break' is exaggerating it a bit, but it's an important year after the big stride we made last season, it's certainly important that we progress further and sustain a challenge again, and hopefully win something, otherwise it'll be four seasons without a trophy.

Agreed. It's encouraging that we had such an impressive season with little contribution from last summer's recruits. Rafa just needs to learn from last summer and bring in two really good players who improve the first eleven.

I just hope he gets it right, especially after last Summer with Keane and Dossena 🙁

I wonder how much Barry's City transfer will effect his thinking, assuming he was still in for him.

I'll fight every inch of way to make Liverpool FC champions - Rafa Benitez

Jun 9 2009 by James Pearce, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today promised supporters he is up for the “fight†as he looks to turn Liverpool from Premier League challengers into champions.

The Reds boss admits it will be a testing summer with only a limited transfer kitty at his disposal.

But the buoyant Spaniard, who signed a new five-year deal back in March, is relishing the challenge.

“When I decided to sign a new contract I did it because Liverpool Football Club is more than a club,†he said.

“It is the heart of the city. It is our life and for the people here it means so much.

“I thought I had to sign. We have to fight. We have to do it.

“The people in this city are always fighting and have been fighting all their lives. We want to do the same.

“We know the situation is not fantastic but I have a lot of confidence in our squad and we want to fight like we did this year.â€

Liverpool’s summer spending is expected to be dwarfed by a number of their rivals with Manchester City having already beaten the Reds in the battle to sign Gareth Barry for £12million.

However, Benitez believes his transfer kitty is big enough to land his main targets.

And he insists he only needs “one or two†players to ensure the Reds build on the progress they made during a memorable campaign.

“It has been a terrific season for us,†he said.

“We came very close and we were competing on all fronts. We want to repeat the same next season.

“I won’t talk about any figures and I can’t say how much we have.

“Clearly we don’t have too much to spend but I think we have enough money to add the one or two players that we need.

“I’m very happy with the squad we’ve got.

“If we can sign one or two players then I’m really positive that we can improve.â€

Benitez believes there is much more to come from the current crop, who pushed Manchester United so close in the race for the title.

“I’m also positive because we were talking recently about how Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard didn’t play together for a long time this season,†he added.

“Hopefully they will play together more next season.

“We’ve also got good young players like David Ngog, Nabil El Zhar, Ryan Babel and Emiliano Insua, who was playing really well, coming through.

“We have a very good squad but we can still improve a little bit.

“How much can we improve? Enough to the win the title? I’m sure it will be enough to compete.

“Like this year we will try to compete on all fronts until the end.â€

Benitez’s focus in recent months has been on ensuring the club keep hold of their star names.

Daniel Agger, Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt have all followed their manager’s lead by agreeing new deals.

“Clearly we knew the situation in the world would be difficult this summer,†he said.

“Some clubs were asking for our players so the priority was to extend the contracts of our key players. Those players who are the spine of the team.

“We spent some money to guarantee this and now we just have to improve a little bit because we are in a very good position.â€

Benitez will celebrate five years in the Anfield hotseat next week and he admits the support of the fans continues to inspire him.

“Every single year, every single week and every single day when you talk with a fan he is supporting you and supporting the team,†he said.

“You can see the passion and it makes a massive difference.

“This city has passion. When we talk about Evertonians they have passion for their club that is really good.

“Our fans are amazing and when I talk with people in Spain they all say the same.

“We will see it again when we go to Asiain pre-season.

“I receive a lot of letters from people talking about the club. And as I said before this is more than a club. It is the heart of the city.â€

each to their own but I'm only concerned with a league challenge. so I'm looking at rafa exceeding 86 points (progress) anything above and beyond that in the cup competitions is neither here nor there to me.

the one thing that is pleasing is rafa has (seemingly) FINALLY got the message the thing (most) liverpool fans crave is the league.

Shame Mascherano doesn't have the same passion for the club and the city.

That interview does make it sound like Babel's not going to be sold though. Anyone think he'll be given another year to prove himself? Anyone think he'll actually get a chance to prove himself if he stays?

Cheers Skully..

Interesting that he mentions Babel, N'Gog and co, maybe he's thinking about keeping as much of this squad together as he can and then just adding the couple of signings he feels he needs. I think I'd rather him do that than break it up too much, though obviously if we have to sell a few then needs must.

Hopefully Alonso and Masher will stay and then we can focus on the couple of positions that need strengthening to get us there. My only concern is that I still feel we need three players, a right back, a wide man and a striker.

Hmmm.. I don't think I was saying that a cup is the priority. A challenge is the priority, but it's hardly a given that we'll win it, and this club is about winning so it's important that we try and win something as well as sustaining a challenge. That would be a step on from last season aswell.

Yeah, but if we've only got about £20m (net) to spend, those three positions may be out of our reach - in which case I'd rather he spent big on a forward who could play LW and cover Torres than divided his money on buying two players who were each half as good.

Maybe the lack of funds has made him rethink the Babel situation?

Possibly yeah, and it's logical really even if he has flattered to deceive, he needs indulgence but he needs to pull his finger out too, and maybe he'll show what he can do then.

You're right about the striker/wing, a player that could cover both would be ideal. Who though? Tevez seems out of reach.

I'm sure the fans who pay good money and follow us home and away and expect us to at least try and win every comp we enter will disagree.

2nd in the league is neither here nor there to me, and the minimum expectation every season should be a trophy as it breeds a winning mentality.

I hope babel stays has a good pre season (something he missed last season) and pushes hard for the first team. a torred season is now over for him, buck up and do better. even babel must realise he's in last chance saloon.
babel is one of the reasons we fell short, just turning two more draws into wings from the bench would have made the difference.

There's an interview from his agent on planetfootball, basically whoring Masher out to Barca.

Well, that's agents for you. Doesn't tell you anything about how the player feels. I hope Mascher shuts him up though. It'll be interesting to see whether it happens again.

For what Rafa has achieved in his time with us, he really does deserve a lot more respect than what he often gets on here.
Mate, I wish you'd lose this chip on your shoulder about Rafa criticism, he gets it when it's warranted and gets the plaudits when deserved, it doesn't make it disrespectful. Liverpool fans are renowned for being knowledgeable, not for being rose-tinted, we give respect when it's due and we'll rip someone's flaws to pieces until we can inspect the minutest aspect of it all, it's what we're good at, we're perfectionists and we know our stuff and we strive to be the very best.

Yeah ok, so sometimes for reasons of passion for the game (or just sheer stupidity) some people go over the top in both their criticism and praise, but I think by and large this forum is fair and he gets all the love and respect he deserves. It's just that occasionally he deserves a good shoeing too.
Mark, you and Keni always come up with this defense, and frankly it just doesn't fit. You are describing your rationality. It is not representative of SCM.

Critical posts from you, Keni and a few others who give a generally balanced view are not the object of Rafa4PM's irk. It's the constant downplaying of Rafa's acheivements, the disrespect shown, the completely baseless accusations that are thrown at his personality and character, etc. Those are the things that us "RCDNW's" take isue with.

Some do go over the top mate, I've probably been guilty of it too, but that's not his 'irk'.

Critical and well justified posts have repeatedly been the subject of this kind of attitude by Rafa4pm and a few others too in the past, it's not just about posters calling Rafa a cunt, it's often been the issue when fair criticism has been thrown Rafa's way.

For however extreme some of the name calling and disrespect can be, there's some really over the top, blinkered Rafa-love in equal measure.

But that always appears second, mark, once the diehard Rafa-bashers (among whom I don't include you) have had a go.  You won't see a thread, or a discussion within a thread, started by someone who wants to give Rafa a real rimming.  A pound to a penny says that, if the naysayers quit looking for every last reason (real or, often, imagined) to aim a kick in Rafa's direction, this would rapidly become a non-issue.

I'm sorry Mark but i do think that the vast majority of the abuse that Rafa has received on here is simply not justified. I just feel that many posters in the past have been guilty of wading into him needlessly.

He's a great Manager who is doing a fantastic job, and as of such IMO he deserves to be respected by our fans.

Maybe i'm more forthcoming than some mate, but i don't think that i'm the only one that thinks that the Rafa bashing goes OTT on here at times. If the OTT abuse levelled at Rafa stopped, then i'm sure that many of us so called RCDNW's wouldn't feel the need to defend him as much.

I would be delighted if he told his agent to shut up and pledged his future to us this week. I would also be very very surprised.

No way is it in equal measure. This is by far the most 'Anti-Rafa' forum I've seen. I can almost name the posters who like and respect what he's doing, the so called RCDNW'ers ( I hate that term as if its bad to support a clearly talented manager and one of the very best in Europe) and the haters abound.
