Italy vs England

If Budgie stuck a man in this area at all free kicks and corners it would solve a lot of problems. Italy picked up the ball a few times here with no England player in sight, and it led to their first goal

A few problems with Johnson tonight imo:

1) He adds little in the attacking third - bar two adventurous shots, he rarely beats his man (injuries taking a toll?) and his crossing is very erratic.
2) He slows down the play more often than not, which for a team that wants to move the ball quickly is problematic.
3) Defensively, he was actually ok. Better than Baines? Yah, he was shite though ...

I honestly believe people are judging him too harshly, sure Glen of a few years ago would offer more going forwards, but to be as defensively solid (I think he was) as he was tonight whilst constantly offering an option when attacking is a helluva feat.

I doubt anyone available to England bar sterling could so a better job in that position.

In all honesty if woy goes with Sturridge as a lone striker against Uruguay he should drop Rooney. It's clear that he can't play out wide. Lallana would be a much better option on the left.

Stuart Pearce named the same team a few days that Roy played, & all the people who called into talksport said it was ludicrous to pay Rooney out wide as opposed to a genuine wide player with pace.

It's the one concession Roy has made for the press/fa, & imo it's cost him.

He adds very little attacking ... Italy's RB for example was solid defensively and was causing Baines headaches ...

If he can't run that way anymore - no issues, it's the reality. However, when he has the ball - he adds so little nowadays. His passing and ability to move the ball forward (which is one reason I think Rodgers will move him on if we get a bid) quickly is very poor. I just think he's average at best.

Barkley should start

He lost the ball so many times - but he does add something that few English players have.

Problem with starting him is that you have a lazy player who adds nothing defensively ...

Interesting to see how what woy does going forward.

For once I was impressed in the way England played and attempted to play.

Sat too deep though, so the gap between and strikers and defence was too big - allowing Italy to keep possession easily.

On another note, thoroughly enjoyed another Italian victory over the English 😀

Johnson isn't right, I thought he was alright tonight by his recent standards but his touch in particular just isn't there. With simple passes he will take the ball behind him or to the side, nothing is coming naturally, he just seems a worse footballer than 12 months ago. A lot of his venturing forward has become really predictable also.

I can't put my finger on what it is, confidence, fitness, tired, age, a combination of things.

OK, I accept loads of the criticism of Johnson & agree, but can anyone name a rb who offers a pass forwards as much & yet can defend who is available for England?

I honestly can't bar sterling (who is an amazing rb) which would be an insane waste & will never happen.

He gives an outlet in attack constantly. Very few rbs do that.

Not sure if I said on here or to my mate over WhatsApp but I mentioned numbers.

We attacked like Liverpool except for the numbers, we were one or two men short in attack cos they were 20 yards deeper in midfield, meaning the attack was flawed a number of times.

I think with a more aggressive mindset we could have done it like Liverpool & been 2 nil up at least by half an hour, Italy sat back whenever they were run at.

His output in attack is sketchy at best. His crosses and passes are so inconsistent.

The fact his defensive ability is sketchy too is what fucks me off

He wasn't sketchy in defence tonight.

No one has named this English rb who can do what he does yet.

I don't think there is one, that's why he's there. He did alright tonight, certainly no worse than Baines. If you Blame Johnson for not covering behind Cahill you need to blame Baines for falling for the most obvious dummy and not doing more to stop crosses. I always liked Johnson but like I said I just think he's not right at the moment, like he's stuck in a perpetual run of having a bad days.

Glen Johnson was excellent tonight. Theres a reason nothing came down our right.
He and Wellbeck owned that side in the first half and the Italians gave up attacking second half.

I wouldnt play Rooney who was pisspoor. The rest of the team were fine.

Actually thinking about it we should probably be making a bigger deal of Baines being pretty shite tonight defensively, I think he needed more help but I don't think Ashley Cole in his prime would have had as tough a time.

Flanagan.

Fucking really? Nah. No way. I really, really, really like Flanno, but him v Johnson at rb is a no brainer. He gets forward more quickly, but his passing is just as poor as glens is even now & he doesn't have the positional ability to cover as well when tracking back, he dives in far too often compared.

You are really downplaying Flanagan's passing ability in tight areas. It's some of the best in our entire team.

Don't think ive ever mugged myself of more, i thought it was in and went mental, bollocks!

Thought he had done an Owen!

I jumped up & let out a rip roaring YESSSSSS! Woke up kids, pissed off the wife.

If it wasn't fathers day tomorrow I'd be fucked, thankfully, free pass! Hence me still drinking & watching the ivory Coast match.
