Than Houllier's last season in charge?

After the incredible, exhilarating ride we had last season, a season that promised so much is over - even before our traditional Christmas blip in form. It's hard to find many positives nowadays.

Off field: No money, no stadium, no hope.

On field: We look tired, fragmented and short of ideas.

Houllier's last season in charge was probably the most painful of my 25+ years of watching Liverpool Football Club. The Souness years were dark, but we had come off decades of success, so it was *somehow* easier to deal with.

Any thoughts?

Does anyone remember seeing an injury crisis this bad?

Call me a 'stupid' optimist, I do think we'll come out of this soon -

You're a stupid optimist but you're not the only one.

The injury crisis is bad but it is only bad because our squad is shit.

Shit squads win fuck all and the assembly of our shit squad is Rafa's responsibility.

I remember some pretty injury ravaged teams that we put out under Houllier not so long ago.

Wenger or Ferguson always seem to have an army of "unknown" kids who would sweat blood for a chance at first team action.

I would prefer any one of our Reserves to be given a shot over hapless cunts like Lucas or Voronin.

It's more or less the same 'shit squad' that almost won the league last season. I really wish people would read between the lines instead of taking everything at face value.

Yeah we've got a thin squad, and yeah our marking from setpieces is shit, but NO ONE could have accounted for the freak injuries and incidents we've endured this season.

Fucking Sky Sports fans really piss me off. Let's give Rafa £12m to fuck off and bring in Mourinho on the promise that he'll have fuck all to spend.

Then go pour ourselves a bowl of fucking cornflakes.

No way. This is a wretched period, but Houllier's last season was an unstinting immersion in hell. I was close to bursting into tears watching us that season, it was the chronic witlessness of the team that did it. By March it seemed as though every visiting team at Anfield, no matter how bad, scored and then spent the last 20 minutes taking the ball to the corner flag and wasting time. That sequence became unbearable. This current team has plenty of ability once everyone is fit. It's just gutting that so much has already been wasted.

That pretty much mirrored my own feelings.

I think what makes this season so unbearable is that we were on the verge of greatness last season, whereas Season 4 under Houllier was an utter washout. I remember many wanted to call time on Houllier after Season 4, so any levels of real optimism going into Season 5 were left to a minority few.

To be fair, Rafa gave Spearing a go, but he was so shit it was painful to watch.

N'Gog has done pretty well so far, that move that led to our second goal was tasty.

It's as painful as Houlliers second last season in charge. Out of the champions league before christmas, looking unlikely (at the moment) t qualify for champs league next season, and just off a season where we came second, raising expectations for the following season.

Hopefully next season won't be as painful as Houllliers last season in charge.

We may yet this season FFS - it's far from over.

I partially agree with Bazza (the rousing press statements which just don't ring true are another reminder of that time) but the difference is that Houllier's downfall was almost exclusively self-inflicted whereas Rafa - who admittedly has to take some of the blame for the thinness of our squad - can point to an unprecedented avalanche of bad luck as well.

Agreed, I'm not really having a go too much at Rafa, obviously we've been ridiculously unlucky with injuries. Just drawing the comparisons of the results we had on the pitch that season. It hurts. Try be Irish, and it hurts even more!!!

Jules, are you seriously thinking we may yet win the League?

Seriously?

Even SpionKop would've burnt his 2009/10 PL Winners flags by now.

We have actually made up more ground than this to get to the top of the league at least once before, but realistically I'm afraid this season's title has gone now. What I certainly do think is that we're still a good bet for a top four place, whereas thelurker was insinuating otherwise.

No.

We could well be back to having a fully fit squad in around a weeks time, i whole heartedly expect us to click into gear very soon (too late though i know).

But it is true about Sky: this match-by-match 'so who'll win it now?' attitude, in November, is worthy of sectioning someone, yet no one bats an eyelid these days. Even six year olds must roll their eyes and prefer enduring Chucklevision.
