The World Cup and European Cups are, so why not the qualifiers?

The domestic season would end earlier. The national team players could gel more. There would be less of a club vs country conflict.Support would be stronger as there is no club distraction. Financially it would also be winner for the respective FA's as viewing figures would be higher.

I think it's only a matter of time before we see a Kerry Packer-style move by TV companies to basically take over from FIFA, either by controlling it or competing against it. In their greed, FIFA have unwittingly created the basis for TV to usurp their authority. It's TV money that's powering the Champions League, the Premier League and international tournaments. Eventually the biggest TV moguls are going to say, 'Look, if you want more money from us, you'll stage the tournaments here, at this time of year, at this time of day, etc etc'. They only have even a chance of making their investment pay if the games are available exactly when they need them in the schedules. World Cups etc are already heavily affected by scheduling needs, and that's going to get worse (or better). The Quatar move has shown such broadcasters that they can't trust FIFA with their money anymore, and something like that won't happen again.

If it were in a summer the travel side might get hectic if you have a 2 month period which is like this (completely made up)

Saturday: Home game in England
Wednesday: Away in Ukraine
Saturday: Home in England
Wednesday: Away in Russia
Saturday: Away in Sweden

etc

The only way they'd make a summer series of qualifiers both practicable and appealing would be to basically make them into mini-tournaments, and that would diminish the big bi-annual competitions, so I can't see it happening. You're right though that something OUGHT to be done, because it's a shambles at present.

They would be mini-tournaments, but the prize would be qualifications - so I cant see it devaluing the WC and EC.

And senior players might get a bit fucked off never having any time off.
I don't exactly know how many weeks are taken by England fixtures, but if its 5 weeks then they could have 4 weeks off before the internationals.

Yeah I suppose.

I'm just glad we don't have a winter break yet. Any change to the league format will include this and will effectively destroy Christmas forever.

I stick. It's not so bad as is.

At the moment qualification is done over 2 seasons, that could be done too

Too much on TV, less of a big build up for summer footie on TV when the WC/EC comes around. They should just seed the big countries and co-opt them into the finals (after all, nearly all of them get there anyway and are needed for the glamour), then concentrate on qualifiers for all the rest.

I suspect international managers would argue that having all the qualifiers in a short space of time means they don't have the flexibility to develop newer squad members so much. The squad for a qualifying series would be made up of those who are in good form at that time, whereas with the qualifiers spread over 2 years that will change.

To make up for that they would demand more friendlies during the regular season and so the object will be defeated.

Sometimes an international break comes at just the right time. I think it's come at a very good time for us next weekend.

I couldn't see it working, e.g.
Summer 2010, filled with World Cup South Africa
Summer 2011, 6 matches to qualify for Euro 2012
Summer 2012, filled with Euro 2012 Ukraine & Poland
Summer 2013, 10 matches to qualify for World Cup Brazil
Summer 2014, filled with World Cup ...............blah, blah, blah
The players couldn't do it

Because not every league in the world runs on a August-May season calendar.
Whose summer are you talking about anyway?
When would players break?
How could you fit that amount of games into a 2 month period?

It's a shite suggestion.

Sorry.

Yep it would never ever work.
It would basically be the end for International football if it did happen.
