There has been a lot of stuff going around the top (ironic) of football. The Superleague breakout was swiftly shut down, but when you look at what is happening in FIFA, the Superleague maybe looks like the least corrupt and damaging alternative out there.
FIFA has lately work hard, backed by Japanese company Softbank (paying 20bn GBP) to establish new tournaments both for clubs and countries. Club world cup is one of the tournaments, but also a world cup every second year has been launched. Ar the congress in May FIFA agreed to also explore the possibility of a world cup every second year.
A few issues for Infantino though. It looks like Saudi Arabia is bankrolling Softbank, and this doesnt go well for UEFA. Another issue of course is that 50% of the teams in the Club world cup should come from Europe, which will devalue the Champions league and Euros would probably dissapear totally. So strong objections from the UEFA, but UEFA only have 9 of 37 seats in the FIFA board. So for them to vote no is probably not enough to stop Infantino, who has strong backing from Asia and Africa, to proceed with his ideas.
In my view we see a «war» coming. Sadly it is not about how the football can be more attractive to the fans, but rather where can most power and money end up?
In Norway in June the FA hold a meeting where all Clubs decide if Norway boycot world cup in Qatar or not. Most fans seem to lobby hard to get Norwegian FA to boycot it. Even the fans of mighty Rosenborg forced their Club (owned by the members) to officially back a boycot. The FA themselves of course are fighting the case where the grasroot votes yes for a boycot, and has now demanded that all Clubs that want to vote must physically turn up (stupid in a pandemic). But if more Clubs vote yes they have no choice but to boycot. Sad times indeed for football politics but important ones for us fans.
