... we spent £36m on a LB, a LW and a striker. It was in many ways to prove the defining moment of Benitez's reign. All three - Dossena, Riera and Keane - were disasters. (I know some of you will defend Riera, but let's not go into that now.)

So, given the same budget and the same targets this summer, could you do better than Benitez? You have £36m and you have to buy a whole new left flank plus a striker who can ideally partner Torres *and* replace him when he's injured. Can you do it? Realistic evaluations only, please; no extra money from sales of other players; and give a team at the end to show how your new signings would fit in...

You doubted me when I said that was Rafa's equivalent of Houllier's summer of 2002

I don't think I've ever seen him play. His goal record is ace, but then so was Dirk's in Holland. What's he like, Rafa?

I like Taiwo and Turan, but I'm struggling to think of a forward I want that I could afford after spending probably £18m on those two.

How much would Darren Bent cost, d'you reckon?

gh's summer of 2002 doesn't apply because after the summer of 2008 rafa finished 2nd in the league.
So what? None of the players he bought made any impression on that team, and we're paying the price for that disaster of a summer right now - with a squad that desperately lacks a good LB, LW and second striker. You think that's coincidence?
Kolarev 8 mill

Turan 12 mill

Forlan 16 mill
You really want to pay £16m for a 31-yr-old striker who conspicuously failed during his previous term in English football? Ugh.

Who's Kolarev?

keane was not a disaster he really is a good player rafa just didn't want him .if we had him instead of ngog we would have been better placed this season.

I'd like to point out that part of the reason they were disasters was Rafa's shite man managment skills.

You can only say Riera was given a fair crack of the whip out of those 3. And to be fair he performed well in his 1st season until Rafa got to him as well.

The one common denominator in most players failing here has been Rafa and his shitty man management skills.

The day someone new comes in and puts an arm round the players at Melwood will be a great day. Yes it is important to be in charge and be seen to be in charge, but it is as equally important to be human and listen to your squad at times. Rafa has been pure horseshite at the latter and as such the turnover of players reflects this.

Someone like Mourinho would a bit of both in this case.

I'm not sure about all that. Keane didn't do particularly well under the arm-round-the-shoulders management of 'Arry Redknapp, did he? I think we just bought him when he was already in decline, and that his personality didn't fit with our other big players. Plus, tactically, Rafa didn't seem to know what to do with him. Anyway, whoever's fault it was, he was a disastrous signing - and the manager always takes the blame for that.

it would be impressive if we could get chivu - he would probably jump at 1st team footy.

chamkah - we blew this one, no chance.

riise? nah

I'd just put 20 million on Tevez - get him and then 9 million on Turan.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

Still, I knew Dossena couldn't defend and Keane was a mistake before they played for us.

And soon as it was spent some of us called it that we would never win the league under him.

Simple. Keep Riise. Buy Bent. Buy Downing.

League winners 08/09

FILIPE LUIS KASMIRSKI

LB/LW - Felipe - don't know what he'd cost. I'm presuming no more than 10M.

Then I'm struggling. Maybe Henry for 5m depending on evaluation of his fitness and desire and Suarez for whatever we have left... 20M+.

Well I haven't seen him play for Barca this season (has he played?) but his performances for France have been unbelievably bad.

No, he hasn't played and I've been wondering why. Bojan or one of the other youngsters such as Jeffren is usually preferred, which means he's definitely off in the summer.

I wasn't sure whether he'd fallen out of favour for some personal reason or he's just fucked. Either way it seems strange to me though as he had a very good season last year.
