Didn't Fowler call Anelka a cock in his autobiography?

Anyway Owen, Bellamy, Anelka and Crouch are the ones that stand out. Losing Owen was the biggest blow out of them all.
really? I was made up when he was fucked off.
You were "made up" we lost the European footballer of the year and didn't come close to adequately replace him until Fernando Torres arrived?

Unbelievable.
Yeah, Owne didnt offer enough to the team. All he did was score goals.
well that (significant) attribute hasn't convinced capello.

That's a shit argument and you know it. The Owen of 2003/4 would be in the team.

Owen, Anelka, Crouch & Bellamy are all good strikers. All should have (arguably) stayed longer and could have contributed more.

He was top scorer at the club from 1998 to the season he left, despite some injury plagued seasons.

Your stance on this is ridiculous.

Robbie's book is an interesting read but (like many sporting autobiogs TBF) far from objective, and should absolutely NOT be taken as gospel. In it Robbie also refuses to face up to the dishonesty and unprofessionalism of his mate McMoneyman and the failings of Souness as a manager. A fair bit of what he says is no more than an attempt to justify his own errors of judgment or those of others close to him.

As far as Nico Anelka is concerned, Sammy Lee, Thommo and Stevie G had nothing but good to say about him - even Houllier himself has since that said his decision was a close call and admitted that he got it wrong. Robbie is in a minority of one over this. Nico himself made it clear not only at the time but for years afterwards that he'd have crawled back to Anfield over broken glass to play for us again. Junking him was Houllier's first really serious blunder, compounded by signing the disaster that was Spit the Dog instead. Given how we played in those six months with Nico up front for us, I'm convinced we'd have won the league by now if that decision had gone the other way and we'd kept that momentum.
I agree with you regarding Fowler's book. More interesting than most footballers' books but hardly reliable.

And you may be correct about Anelka, but this does not alter my point that AT THE TIME he was happy. He is always happy when he first goes to clubs. However, going by his record at other clubs you must accept that there is a good chance it would not have worked out for him long term at Liverpool and Houllier was right to have concerns.

As I said, buying Diouf instead was the big mistake in every sense. If we had bought someone else instead of Diouf then we probably wouldn't be considering Anelka as the 'one that got away' as much as we do now.
Every transfer has its risks and yes, in theory at least, there was a risk that Nico could have gone sour on us as he had on other clubs before. I don't think I do accept, though, that there was a "good" chance of it happening at LFC. That doesn't take into account the guy's reaction to the club and the city, where he was rated, liked and given the chance to resurrect a stuttering career in what was actually a very good side, before Houllier himself p!ssed its momentum away. As spider neil has said, Nico loved his time with us. We saw a major change in him in the six months he spent here, and Houllier should have had the courage to run with it.

The mistake was not necessarily letting Anelka go (although I agree it was a mistake), it was spending the money on the non-existent talent of that hideous oxygen thief Diouf.

I'm all owen argued out, sufficed to say I wanted him out, and with the money we bought alonso and garcia, two players who went a long way to making us win number 5.

I was happy Owen left the club at the time. Any player, however good, who doesn't want to play for Liverpool can fuck off as far as I am concerned.

I don't see you pushing Mascherano out the door.

And we could've bought Alonso and Garcia without the Owen money. It wasn't a factor.

Owen leaving wasn't key to us winning the Champions League.

my saying the alonso/garcia money came from the owen sale is from rafa qoutes.

we maybe could still have won the CL with owen, I would say we'll never know but we had owen in the CL and only reached the 1/4 finals.

there were reasons I wanted owen out, the main one was I thought he was stringing the club along. make no mistake he would have gone for free had we not sold him.

Anelka's the one that got away, although i think he's the biggest bottler in football.

i'm not bothered about the rest.

Personally I'd choose Neil Mellor, Erik Meijer and Sean Dundee ahead of El Hadji Diouf. Slobbery Cunt, nasty little piece of work who blamed everyone but himself and dressed like a fucking dalmatian.

Remember the 'patting' on his head excuse, and then doing it to a ref? What a cumsock, the worst player (mentally and ability wise) to pull on a red shirt.

What an Olympic-class dipstick Diouf is. He's actually got me sympathising with the blueslime at the moment (something I could have sworn would be impossible) over those ludicrous racism allegations.

I've not read the whole thread, has anybody chosen Diouf ?

I wonder if Robbie still has a chance for South Africa 2010? Cappello get your scouts down to Queensland, avanti!
There's more chance of Stephen Hawking walking onto the flight to South-Africa.

Bellamy for sure. He's a cracking player and is showing himself to be very useful in a City side full of "stars". Not a very prolific scorer, he nonetheless is a very useful and surprisingly unselfish player who would be great for us (or any other team).
