How To Score In One On One Situations

How guff is Benteke in these situations, he needs to go back to basics.. He is proper doing my head in..

He's had 4 or 5 one-on-ones since he's arrived and has failed to score any of them. That is pretty damn miserable and an obvious sign of poor technique. He tried to nutmeg the keeper yesterday, that surely has to be the hardest way to score a 1-on-1.

And there we have it in one. He's just technically poor.

It's not really about being technically poor. He lacks intelligence, which is obvious in a few ways:

*He's more clinical when pouncing on a loose ball without time to think
*His movement is poor, as is his positioning and the runs he makes.
*He's caught offside ALOT.
*In one on one situations, when he has to weigh up his options, he more often than not makes the wrong choice.

That being said, despite the miss, he looked much better with the arrival of Sturridge and Origi. That's the first time anyone has really linked up well with him and fed half decent service.

Anyone who thinks he's shit is just silly. He's a good player in the wrong team. I had high hopes for him adapting etc and a small part of me still thinks it's confidence and learning the ways of our team, but it if it's gonna happen for him it needs to happen soon. Or next Xmas he will be gone, at the latest.

This is what I don't get. Are you claiming those chances he missed can only be regularly scored if he's in the"right" team?

No, the chances he's getting he should be finishing, but he's a centre forward, not an out and out striker. He's got some strengths that other centre forwards don't have, in that he can be more clinical given the right sort of opportunities. He's missed all kinds of chances, but the main criticism here is about one-on-one situations. At Villa there was a build up play around him with him as the focus, either through typical route one stuff, or good delivery either through crosses into the box, or the likes of Agbonlahor working their way to the byline and cutting it back. When he was the focus of an attack he was confident and positive, now he's at a big club where he isn't the sole focus and he has had to adjust. He hasn't adjusted well to us, and us to him, quelle surprise.

The service he is getting now is relatively poor, so the focus is magnified every time he gets a chance. On the one hand he should be taking some of these chances, on the other we've made little attempt to alter our approach play and it's effecting him and effecting the likes of Coutinho. He's snatching at chances.

You could see some difference yesterday with the introduction of Sturridge and Origi, suddenly he was linking with players and finding more space. It's not rocket science, but the "he's shit" stuff is just lazy nonsense, give him a bit of support and we'll see the difference. Whether it's enough is another question, I don't think it is, but it's better than him standing there with two playmakers behind him who are looking for pacy runs off the shoulder. It's six of one, half a dozen of the other, wrong player, wrong team, but the blame doesn't land squarely on him.

We're persevering with this style and not scoring goals, so something has to give. We've now got three quality attackers available plus Coutinho and Firmino. Change it, give him support, play with two strikers at home, etc.

Christ Alive, it's not really fair comparing Christian Benteke's finishing ability to Robbie fucking Fowler, who was arguably the most preternaturally gifted finisher to ever play for Liverpool.

I don't think anyone compared his finishing to Fowlers. I think a side bar opened in the thread.

A new thread properly needed. I'll start one.

Before he came here he was a one in two striker in the prem. So we can look at his few months with a new team etc but ignore everything previous?
He's a good player, but it's not working for him with us at the moment, if it ever will. Look at Villa now that he a Delph have left.

Exactly. The "he's shit" bollocks is just that. We do have some players who are no doubt pretty close to being shit, but he ain't one of them.

He's not shit, but he is the obvious square peg. We don't have the players in behind him to maximise his talents. As Mark said, he's better with support but then that means sacrificing one of the 'floaty three' to accommodate another striker.

He doesn't fit the current squad, so do you make changes to the squad to make him fit? Or, do you sell him on and buy someone in who can play the role he is being asked to?

It's amazing to think, really, that Carroll was sold on because he didn't fit with Rodgers' style, but then the club spent almost the same amount of money on a striker with some very similar qualities (and that isn't a comparison of their abilities, just an acknowledgement of similarities in their respective styles...)

Can't argue with that. Strange signing

I appreciate the point people are making with all these stats but he is not doing anything different here from when he was at Villa. I suspect that if you dug up his Liverpool stats, he's not far from 1 in 2. And remember he came with a Premier-league proved premium presumably reflecting his ability to hit the ground running. It's not his fault, by the way, but that of those who actually thought what is acceptable at Villa would also be good enough for Liverpool. It's not the first time this has happened but this has to be one of the most predictable (even Sherwood warned this would happen). This is looking like a shambles for all concerned: the lad, Liverpool and, most of all, for Villa who seem certain to go down.

His overall stats for us this season are 7 goals in 30 appearances.

His Premiership stats are 6 goals in 20 appearances. 12 of which were starts, so his record in the Premiership when starting is better than his record in any other competition (and is his standard 1 in 2), but most of those goals came before Xmas when he was starting games most weeks. His other goal came in Europe where he's played 2 games (so 1 in 2 again).

So that tells me he's a confidence player. He's scored regularly when starting in the most important competition(s) for us and has failed when he's been a sub and when he's played in patched up teams in the cups. He's scored against United and Chelsea among others, so it strikes me as a bit odd that we've relegated him to either trying to change games that weren't going our way, or playing in cup games against weaker opposition.

I don't really deny the point that he isn't suited to the way we play, but I'd wager if you put him in most games now with Sturridge, he'll score goals. If he's going to go at the end of the season then fine, but it's a fucking waste to not try to utilise his talents when we can't buy a goal. Yeah he's not that bright a "player", but if he gets support and room in attack, he'll bag goals and we'll start winning fucking games.

I am sure if you get a all the clips of Suarez's first season with us - you will find many one on one misses. But he actually developed and became unbeatable. I actually don't think you can teach this one-on-one stuff to a player - it's all about two things when the situation arises:-

1) Keeping a cool head is a must
2) Giving yourself enough 'Time' to do the necessary action before that shot.

I think Benteke can do (1) but he just cannot do point (2).

Difference was that when he wasn't scoring Suarez was working his ass off for the team and creating chances for others. When benteke isn't scoring he offers the square root of fuck all to the team.

Actually - that is what I was thinking too and in most cases that is true. However, when I think back to the Exeter game where he was played, he was actually moving that ball around and making good passes to others to get in scoring positions. So he has got an eye for a good pass and all. I am trying to refuse to believe that the guy just does not get how bad he looks when he is having those days and producing the square root of fuck all. Nah - I agree with you - he does look like he does fuck all if not scoring.
