Burnley have enjoyed an excellent start to the season considering the fixtures they’ve had to contend with. They’ve faced three of last season’s top five sides as well as played away at Stoke who had one of the best home records in the division. Now they face last season’s runners-up at Anfield after being brought back down to earth by a 3-0 defeat at Chelsea in their last game.

Liverpool won their last match 3-2 at Bolton which should give them fresh impetus after losing two of their opening four matches. Owen Coyle’s side may have won both their home games but they’ve now lost both their away matches without scoring and conceded five goals in the process. I expect more of the same at Anfield despite the majority of Liverpool’s players having been away on international duty.

The main problem Rafa Benitez’s side have faced this season is their inability to defend set-pieces as all seven goals conceded have come via that route. This is a surprising development but this shouldn’t be as much of a problem against the Clarets who are not the biggest of teams. The Reds may have lost their last home league game surprisingly to Aston Villa but it’s been over four and a half years since they lost back-to-back league games at Anfield and I can’t see Burnley pulling off another big shock.

Despite the loss of Xabi Alonso Liverpool are still creating lots of chances which is emphasized by the fact that Rafa’s team have had 37 shots on target already this season, more than any other side in the Premier League. If Burnley are to stand any chance of stopping the home side then they will have to stop Fernando Torres who has scored 4 goals in his last 5 league appearances and has an incredible record at Anfield.

The Spanish international has scored a staggering 30 goals in 32 Premier League appearances in front of his home fans. Unfortunately for Owen Coyle and Burnley fans, I expect he’s going to improve on that record this weekend.

Two amazing facts there; we have most shots on target so far and Nando's home scoring record - phenomenal !!

about a third of those shots were Mascher shooting from a billion yards!!

Ha, true.

30 in 32 is unbelievable.

I reckon these numbers are underlining what we all already knew; We've probably got the best striker in the world.

And that he scores far more goals at home than away. Strange in a way - you'd think he'd have more opportunities to use his pace on the break in away matches.

That is rather weird actually.

He has been squandering a lot of chances away from home though (e.g. Bolton away) so maybe it's a confidence issue rather than anything else?

He should be able to use his speed better playing away from home as you say so I reckon it's only a matter of time before he'll start to score as freely at the Reebok's, Upton Park's and Craven Cottages' of this world as well.

We all knew what a big talent and potential great player Torres was when we brought him in for Atletico but the main thing about him that has surprised me the most is his sheer strenghth. Besides beeing a rather tall player he's so good at using his strength and balance to get himself into scoring positions. More so than most other strikers of today.

I reckon this is why he has managed to score as many goals at Anfield as has been the case, defenders simply can't keep him quiet even if they are standing on his toes.

You numbskull ! It says ON TARGET - so I guess you;ve just paid him a back-handed compliment.

According to the Echo Mascher is a major doubt and won't be risked against Burnley.

They think Lucas and Gerrard will play central midfield.

Not really - they might be on target, but they're mostly about as threatening for the goalkeeper as a backpass. Less so, even, as he's allowed to catch it.

I'm certain that's not what was meant Bunny - since the majority of Masher's shots end up in Row Z and GOD 23 specifically said Masher was shooting from a billion yards away !

Ha Ha - good lad. 😉

JAVIER MASCHERANO is a major doubt for Liverpool's Premier League clash with Burnley at Anfield tomorrow.

The 25-year-old midfielder picked up a knock in Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Paraguay on Wednesday night.

Mascherano is having treatment but after playing two full 90 minutes for his country over the past week he is unlikely to be risked against the Clarets.

However, Lucas Leiva is expected to play after making the 6,000 mile trip home from South America.

Lucas was due back at Melwood today and having not featured in either of Brazil's World Cup qualifiers he is set to face Owen Coyle's side.

If Mascherano misses out, skipper Steven Gerrard is expected to drop into a central midfield role alongside Lucas.

Meanwhile, Rafa Benitez admits he faces a selection dilemma at left-back ahead of Liverpool's first league meeting with Burnley for 33 years.

Emiliano Insua has got the nod ahead of Andrea Dossena in the opening four matches but Fabio Aurelio is pressing for a recall.

The Brazilian has proved his fitness following knee surgery and Benitez believes the Reds have missed the 29-year-old.

"Fabio is a player with quality," he said. "His delivery into the box, especially when we play at home, is excellent. He provides good passes and crosses which is really important.

"He has no match fitness but he is much better and he hasn't been away with his country so he has been training hard. Fabio knows exactly what we expect from him.

"Insua has been doing really well. He impressed last season when we needed him and it's the same this season.

"We have really good competition now on the left with Insua, Aurelio and Dossena.

"That means a headache for me but that's good. It’s up to me to pick the right player."

Benitez also has a decision to make further forward with Yossi Benayoun, Albert Riera and Ryan Babel all vying for the left wing role.

Riera and Babel have both hit out at their lack of first team action so far this season. Babel even admitted he wants to join Ajax on loan in January but Benitez dismissed talk of the Dutchman moving on.

"I've already talked with Riera and that's not a problem and I will talk with Ryan and analyse the situation with him," he said. "What is clear is that if they want to play then they have to compete.

"Ryan has to perform for us. He has to be ready for this game or the next one because we have a lot of games before January.

"I’m not thinking about the possibility of him going out on loan. I’m just thinking about getting the best out of him."

Benitez expects to have £18million signing Alberto Aquilani training before the end of the month.

The Italian international is making good progress after undergoing ankle surgery this summer.
