Golden Dawn is the far right party in Greece, very fucking far right. They're a bunch of nut jobs who are making the most of the current crisis in Greece and are rapidly gaining in popularity. Opinion polls suggest that they will get 5% of the vote, I fear they will get a lot more - possibly as much as 10% or even higher. I really hope that I am wrong on this. There is an election on the 6th of May, you should expect to see Greece in the news again on that day. I'm expecting trouble on a massive scale when the results are announced and loads of turmoil in the weeks that follow it. I hope that I get paid the money that I'm owed before then as I expect the strikes etc that are bound to happen will delay my wage. I'm already owed Jan, Feb, March and April's wages!
Golden Dawn recently had internal elections on the anniversary of the right wing junta taking power in Greece (21st April). This is in contrast to the 17th of November; a big holiday as it celebrates the student uprising against the military dictator in 1973. The uprising started in the Athens Polytechnic, the students had staged a sit in protest so the military sent in the tanks. The gates that were destroyed are still on display in the polytechnio, although the gates are just sitting there rusting away the students here have taken their right to protest very serious ever since then. The police aren't allowed onto a university campus unless they have been given permission. Anarchists us this to their advantage any time there is trouble as they use the polytechnio as a base to launch attacks against the police. There is also a large communist vote among the students here, even though most of them haven't worked a day in their life. I work for the polytechnio, this is another reason why I expect delays and disruptions.
You will see their name (Χρυσή Αυγή) sprayed on walls alongside other graffiti saying foreigners out etc, all the usual racist shit you see written by idiots. Sometimes you will see that the graffiti has been changed by a more normal person so that it reads Χρυσα Αυγα - Golden Eggs, a company that sells eggs here.
