Gerrards injuries - lessening the blow

Since Alonso left it's getting more and more obvious how much we depend on Gerrard in the midfield.
It has cost us in the past, especially the season we ended up in 2nd place.

So how do we rectify this? How do we soften the blow every time he's injured?

Looking at our midfields proneness to injuries, our formation (3 midfielders) and the amount of fixtures we play every season we basically need 2 more players in midfield.

IMO there's a simple cheap solution to this. Keep Aquaman and add Charlie Adam.

How are we gonna fit all of them in the team, you might ask?

The answer is we won't. But we know for a fact that Gerrard will break down during the season maybe once or twice. Aquilani will also be injured and so will Meireles. Lucas and Adam are made of an alloy that's stronger than that X-men shit but they will need a rest as well.

Having Gerrard, Aquilani, Lucas, Meireles and Adam competing for three places in the team isn't that bad.
Fuck Cole off to the wing or to West ham.
Spearing has no place in the team and Poulsen is finished.

There are other places in the team that needs to be filled but that's a different thread.

Yep. I'd bring Aquilani back, tell him that we're playing proper football now and that he'll get regular air-time.

Charlie Adam too, yep, sounds good.

And probably a specialist DM of quality that we can use when we need to and to tighten things up if we're holding on to a lead.

Main thing about Gerrard at the moment is that he's really our only midfielder that can physically dominate other Premiership midfielders. We need to make sure that's not the case next season, and I'm not 100% sure only signing Charlie Adam is going to cut it, good player as he is.

I've seen enough of Adam this season to convince me that he's too good for minnows like Blackpool.
This is even more evident when they play against the top teams in the premiership. He never shy's away from duels and is very disciplined in his deep lying position. The only problem with him is his pace. He need to loose a couple of punds around the waist. That shouldn't be a problem with our fitness regiment.
I think he can do a job at Liverpool.

Regarding the defensive midfield position, I reckon that you can argue that we need a defensive midfielder as a first line of defence. Personally I think we're more vulnerable on the wings.

Lucas has done a decent enough job at DM but I also think a player like Adam, especially in home games, might be an upgrade because of his passing range.
Having 6 midfielders competing for 3 spots is IMO one to many.

Don't forget our U19 England captain Coady, who I think might be the next one to make it into the first team.

Are you counting Maxi? I think if we're hanging on to him he's better of as backup for one of the more advanced positions.

He's really just filling in at the moment because of a lack of options.

No I meant if we bring in a defensive midfielder, Adam and Aquilani. That would make it six.
Maxi doesn't have a future at LFC. Should be replaced in the summer.
I wonder how Suarez will feel considering that all of our Spanish speaking players might leave during the summer, Aurelio, Maxi, Reina and to lesser extent Poulsen.

Kinda feel bad for them though.

I can imagine them coming home from playschool asking 'Daddy, what does fucking garbage mean'

"daddy, rachel said you were a cuntmuscle. Wassdat?"

He still has Lucas to love, and also he's got Kuyt to speak Dutch to. And Babel could fly in to give him some love as well on his off-days. If we do sign Eljero Elias, there's additional company (albeit Dutch-speaking).

Not a bad idea if he isn't too close to the Spaniards anyway, given that they haven't showed a lot of desire to fulfill their contracts (Arbeloa: wanted to return to Spain; Xabi: could still have stayed if he really wanted to; Torres: f**ked off at the first/second chance; Reina: probably just waiting for a bid in the summer).

Being Brazilian, Lucas probably speaks Portuguese.

Really slowly, no doubt.
