via a friend of Stevies dad, worries that his career is more or less over..

Don't shoot the messenger!

Can't say I would be suprised tbh, I hope its not true though, obv.

He needs to sack England off.

Hanging on for Euro 2012 isn't worth it, as England won't do anything worth a wank.

That'd be pretty gutting. He doesn't deserve to go out like that... especially not on the back of the last couple seasons.

Not to mention the small issue of having to replace our best player (on top of overhauling an already decimated squad).

I know he always says he doesn't, but I hope, when his career is finished be it now or in a number of seasons time, he doesn't regret some of the decisions he made.
Undoubtly deserves to be considered right up there with the very best.
But a player of his calibre would normally have multiples of league titles as well as the rest.

Didn't they just say that the operation was a success?

I've never heard of anyone having to hang up their boots because of a groin injury.

Hopefully this isn't true, would be truly horrible.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has undergone surgery on the groin injury that has curtailed his season.

It was confirmed on Friday that the midfielder would not play again this term after suffering a setback in his recovery from the problem that has kept him out since early March, and tests revealed that the 30-year-old required an operation.

The procedure has been declared a success and Liverpool expect their talismanic leader to be available for pre-season training.

A statement on the Liverpool website read: "Liverpool FC today confirmed that Steven Gerrard has undergone successful surgery on his groin.

"The decision was taken after consultation with leading specialists.

"The player will now begin a rehabilitation programme and is expected to return for pre-season training."

What I hope Gerrard will do:

1. Retire from internationals; England isn't winning anything soon and he's got shafted around too much in that setup.
2. Understand his all-action marauding days are perhaps over, and learn to play the holding midfield role from Didi.

You see this, people ?

This is the attitude we should be taking, not "Oh, let us sit upon the ground and sing sad songs" !

Of course it's terrible news (if true) but don't put him in the pundit's chair, just yet.

Well that sucks, I have been saying he should be playing the holding position for a while now.

Stevie Raul
Suarez

I don't think Gerrard can do the DM position simply cos I dint think he can be that restrained.

I hope he's wrong as he has every attribute plus the most important one of reading the game.

If you're referring to Chelsea, count, I suspect Stevie's settled in his own mind about having made the right call, and so he should be. He'd have hated leaving, and he'd have hated being at a plastic club like that almost as much. Unless we make unexpectedly rapid progress now he may well have a regret or two about not winning more medals, but ultimately he'll know that winning them at another club wouldn't have been worth the heartache and the hassle.

He's been a great player and is a true LFC legend, fact is though we can't rely on Stevie anymore.
Albeit a weakened squad and poor season but we have relied on him this season at times and regardless of who is brought in this summer the fact remains that he can still take games by the scruff of the neck and influence them. I refuse to believe these knee jerk reactions that he's finished or we cant rely on him, he's a world class player and when his legs give in he'll use his experience to stay at the top level.....that I am positive of!!
Nah, not just Chelsea JJ. He could have had his pick of clubs a couple of seasons ago. Inter, Real, Barca, he would have been sensational with them all.

Don't get me wrong, I am really, really, really glad he stayed.

As I said though, I hope at some stage he doesn't have a pang of regret when he looks back over his career.
I don't doubt he would trade countless trophys with another club for just one title with Liverpool but right now even that is looking like a very unlikely prospect.

I'm more optimistic than you on that score, mate. It may take a season or two yet, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say I think we'll win at least one before he leaves.
Well that is very optimistic mate seeing that this thread is about the the fact that rumour has it that Stevie's career is over as of now.
Hope you're right btw

He's bound to be worried, having hit 30 and still seeing this happen. I base my optimism on that of the club, which "expects" to see him back in pre-season training, and the fact that there were worries about his career earlier on when he was seemingly still having growing pains. Let's wait and see.

I think that's completely correct but I'd be lying if I said a small part of me doesn't secretly wish he'd taken the opportunity two seasons ago to sign with Barca or Madrid. He'd have been a sensation over there with his thunderous shot making, laser passing and his all round power running, all action style.

The paradox is, of course, if he'd left two seasons ago I'd have been furious and it's really only because he didn't leave (and we didn't come close to fulfilling his ambitions) that I feel this way.

I found it very sad that Sami left the club without winning the title. For it to happen with Stevie would be tragic.

I don't think he's going to win a title with us, and yes, he probably will feel some pangs of regret.

I do think though that he's overall happy wth the decisions he's made because of the bond he has with the club.

From fan to club legend.

Unlike Owen, I don't think Gerrard is going to trade life-long adulation for a league medal.

I think we agree that the mentality aside, he'd fit right well into the role of a holding midfielder, with proper coaching and tempering.

Given his spate of injuries these two seasons and the longer recovery times, I hope he can come around to accept that he has to change his game and mature into a withdrawn role to prolong his career and to buy him time to get a final shot at the league title.

I have long had the feeling that if we win it it will be similar to Bryan Robson when he won it with the Scummers

An old war horse scraping enough appearances together etc.... But that would make it kind of alk the more sweet if it were that way in a way

Season over yes, but career...... nah. As with most aging players, injuries and niggles take a little longer to get over. He'll be back for pre-season ready to go. I must agree with others, he should pass up on england now, if not definitely after euro 2012. I reckon we've 3 maybe 4 seasons to win the trophy that stevie deserves, before he calls it a day.
