I'm not actually sure I want shut. Certainly not at that price.

He's not the winger we all craved, & we paid way too much. Regardless though, he did a good job for much of last season & won me over a fair bit with some solid performances on a consistent basis.

When you think about the kind of players we have bought in that price range though(Coutinho, LAR, Aspas) and players who have transferred to other clubs in that bracket(Mertens, Van Ginkel, Benat) that money could go a long way.

Ibe/suso cam do just as much as downing.

If they struggle then we'll smash open the glass and unleash Aspas on the wing

But did he do a £20 million winger job last season?
He'll be 29 in a few weeks, I'd take what we can get. Also, we can't afford to have a 80k/week winger on the bench.

Btw, I'm not happy selling him, but 8m? That'll buy you a villa and a michu

You lot are mad. Brendan has him
Playing well and contributing after Kenny couldn't. He was one of our top 5 players of last season and now we should sell! Keep

We had to threaten to sell the guy before he could find it within himself to start playing and even then he basically just kept his head above water in a team that finished seventh.

Putting aside his (open to question) form last season and all the financial considerations, we simply can't afford to have guys like that in the squad if we want to progress.

We need a group of motivated players that crave success and will serve as an example to our younger players at the same time.

Downing can go fuck himself and I don't care what we sell him for quite frankly.

He should definitely be sold, and if you think £8M is too low, also consider the wages we're paying him. He's on something mental like £80,000 a week which is ridiculous and better off invested elsewhere.

Come on Fat Sam. Get this done and all will be forgiven.

He is one of those players who doesn't have a big club mentality.

He would thrive at West ham.

It would be worth offering him as sweetener in a bentake deal.

Considering we paid 20m when we should probably have paid 10m to 12m tops, have used him for 2 seasons of which he performed poorly for 1.5 seasons and returned half a decent one, 8m with no part wage payoff is fantastic. A season ago, we might've been talking about 5m and paying part of his wages to move him.

Kenny and Steve Clarke, to be accurate, and who knows how he would have played under them in another season.

Downing vows to fight for place

July 10, 2013
Stewart Downing has vowed to fight for his Liverpool place despite West Ham United's interest in signing him.

The winger’s first-team future at Anfield is under the spotlight following the arrivals of Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, both of whom can play in his position.

Hammers manager Sam Allardyce is considering Downing, 28, as an option as he shapes his squad for next season, although he has not yet made a bid.

Downing has had a difficult time at Liverpool since arriving from Aston Villa for £20 million in 2011, although his form improved over the second half of last season.

He was played out of position at left-back during the early stages of the campaign and his attitude was questioned publicly by manager Brendan Rodgers, but he fought back to regain a regular spot on the wing.

He is determined to hang on to that place, telling Liverpool’s official website: “At every club, you need at least two or three players in every position to keep people on their toes, but especially at a club like this.

“We’re fighting on many fronts – cup competitions and the league – so you have to be strong in every department. But competition brings the best out of players, and hopefully it will in me.

“My targets will be similar to when I got back into the team – enjoy it, work hard and play some good football like we did at the end of last season. If we play like that again as a team, we’ve got a real chance of success. I’ve just got to keep going.

Meanwhile, Liverpool back-up striker Michael Ngoo has joined Championship side Yeovil on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old, who has yet to make a first-team appearance for Liverpool since arriving from Southend in 2009, spent the second half of last season at Hearts.

Well there's no comment there about West Ham, so...

West Ham assistant manager Neil McDonald joined the Sports Bar boys on Monday night and responded to rumours Stewart Downing could be on his way to Upton Park.

The Hammers have been heavily linked with a move for the Liverpool wideman, but McDonald played down the speculation.

Speaking to Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy, he said: "He’s a very good player. A player of that calibre and West Ham being involved would be great, but it’s all paper talk at the moment."

There's still hope, but it looks far from certain.
