West Ham paid 10.5M for Matt fucking Jarvis who is no better a winger than Downing so we should be pushing for as much as we can get here.

I don't want him to go, not one bit, not even for approximately 8M pounds, or 7M, or, okay, 5M plus cross-based bonuses. Imagine if he did leave though, I mean, just imagine it. We'd just be left with our memories of him. All those jaunty backpasses and those incredible interviews where he attempted to triangulate exactly whence his motivation derives, and that one time he did that one thing against whoever it was.

I guess 8M is about as good as we can hope for given the circumstances.

I wonder how much of that will be left after everything has been paid up.

Spot on.

Comments from West Ham fans:

I'm surprised no one's thought of signing Downing to whip in balls to Carroll before

I'd take Downing all day. A better player than Jarvis in my eyes and plays on both sides.

No way we have 8 mill to spend on Downing

Offer them a loan deal and let that be that. We will pay all his wages, thats it

Would take him on loan, wouldnt take him for 8 mill though

He's not better than Jarvis fj. If we really are interested he'd play on the opposite flank to Matt.

Dave. Downing's achievements in the game would suggest he is a better player than Jarvis. I think his general play is better.

Awesome.

Another deal that works out for everyone. He's a good player but we don't need him and 8 million is a great price in the circumstances.*

(*circumstances being there aren't a lot of people who will be willing to pay for him and 8m will be great for our purchasing budget right now)

Didn't we get him for 20m and we are happy to sell for 8m? Make it 10m, and we take a hit for 10m. Still painful but bearable.

West Ham is like that team you create to cheat in Championship Manager/FM for the sole purpose of buying off all your unwanted players, for ridiculous amounts of money.

So what we've learned is that Kenny liked to sign players allerdyce likes

I hate all of you if we end the summer with Downing still rostered.

Can't give a boy false hope like that...

This will be great for Mark who always claimed we "can't judge the Downing & Carroll signings until we see them get a run of games togethor".

there's a difference between saying these players are fucking brilliant and saying that they deserve a go (and for the record, they barely did together), it's better than the usual shite that people come up with, like "he's fucking wank", or watching Modo try to single-handedly hound the player out the club, blah blah. If you sign someone, what's the point in getting on their back from the off? It's better than triumphing on oneupmanship by refusing to support a player and stubbornly failing to acknowledge any positive performance, you know, whatever rocks you're boat, it's win-win isn't it? It must be great on the ego. Who'd have thought Downing wouldn't justify the outlay? When the original thread was dragged up, my first post in that thread said as much, that he was ok but not worth the money.

I don't know why you continue to post about me giving players a bit of time to prove themselves, like I said, that doesn't equate to me saying they're going to be a success, it's just better than the easy route some of you lot seem at ease to pull. Well done yoooooooos.

It's fine Mark. Some of us didn't need to see Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll play together to know whether 55 million pounds was a good use of money, others - like you - did. No biggie.

I would urge Downing to go to the Hammers. He'll be a big fish in small pond over there and will get a chance to resurrect his career.

I get that he may be surplus to requirements, but given that he'd found a bit of form towards the end I'd hope for a bit more than £8M.

That'd feel like we got skanked twice - when we bought him and when we sold him. He was never worth £20M, but I reckon he's worth more than £8M

8M isn't bad considering his age, wages, and stats over the last couple years...

We have plenty of homegrown players. Downing won't get much game time this season but who knows. If an offer comes in, lets see what the final numbers are.

Is there any quotes? I think this is a load of crap! no way would we get that much for him

I'm not actually sure I want shut. Certainly not at that price.

He's not the winger we all craved, & we paid way too much. Regardless though, he did a good job for much of last season & won me over a fair bit with some solid performances on a consistent basis.
