🙁

Downing is another unlikely to be signing a deal at Upton Park this summer, according to the Hammers boss.

Allardyce claimed: "I wouldn't have thought that we could afford Stewart, unfortunately."

If we can get decent wedge for him then it's a no brainer to sell because there won't be much sell on value beyond this season, but he can provide good cover for us. I think he'll go though because of his wages, last chance make something back, etc.

Can't believe I'm saying this but if we don't buy a replacement I really don't mind him staying. Maybe he doesn't provide much going forward but he does position himself well and gives us some kind of balance.

Yup, Downing does offer some balance and width in the side.
Also with Coutinho having the number 10 role we'll have a vacancy on the wing. Aspas would play on the right and the left is up for grabs. Should be between Sterling and Downing. Unless we find a top class winger.

No guarantee coutinho will be always central
Depends on the game I guess. Brendan is evidently looking to sign an attacking midfielder so Coutinho might end up having that free role on the left.

Downing was a disappointment as a new signing, but as he said himself, he is capable of playing very well if Mr. Rodgers calls him into his office and orders him to play better. However I wonder how many times Brendan can work this trick. Downing's form seems to have tailed off again since the last time Rodgers told him to play better. I wouldn't take the risk and prefer us to pocket the £8m.

Even if he maintains his good form, £8m is a great price for a player of his skill set, age, and wages.
We'll never make much off him after this season. Pity I don't think anyone will be in for him that will match his expectations.

I guess my sentiments regarding him are simple.

Sell if someone puts in an offer of 8m plus for him.

Keeping him wont make us champions, selling him wont relegate us.

Now that's a bit harsh....

Carroll too expensive for West Ham, says Allardyce

Apr 15, 2013 2:31:00 PM
The 24-year-old striker is currently on loan from Liverpool, but the Hammers boss admits new financial restrictions could prevent a permanent move to Upton Park.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce admits the club is unlikely to sign Andy Carroll on a permanent deal from Liverpool due to the striker's wage demands.

The 24-year-old forward, who is currently on loan at Upton Park from Brendan Rodgers' side, has scored six goals in 18 Premier League appearances this term. Starting next season, Premier League clubs could be in danger of losing points and being fined after a rules to limit wage bills and cap the losses sides can make to 105 million pounds over three years were ratified last Thursday.

"The hardest thing is the overall package and the overall negotiation that needs to go on and make it is sustainable," Allardyce told reporters. "I point to financial restrictions being implemented next season that could blow the whole deal, in one go. Financially, you're restricted to be able to do it.

"In one fell swoop the financial restrictions mean we won't be able to sign Andy Carroll from Liverpool because it is too expensive, even if we wanted him, which we do.

"Someone will have a bigger and better budget than us probably but this is what is going to happen."

the minute you show any faith in downing, he will quickly sink back into his complacency automode and you will feel like you've been cheated (again!).
