Frank Rijkaard almost certain to be the next Liverpool manager-unrelaible source

EDIT: and for the sake of making a point I've long been arguing - there's a club that succeeded with the model of Director of Football / Coach. Pretty fucking spectacularly too.
but is that success not in a league where all clubs use such a system, thereby suggesting that barcelona's particular DOF is better than other clubs' DOFs, and actually doing sweet FA to prove that it's the system per se that's working at all?

in a similarly logically flawless way, doesn't ferguson's success over 20 years at man utd suggest that the british way of doing things is best?
But they have won CL twice during this time, that should prove something.
true, but english clubs haven't exactly been bad in the CL over the last 6 years, have they? in fact they've been rather dominant.
Because they were financially dominant. Rather than anything else.

I can't think of a team that was successful on a serious scale without going over budget. And that's why I think the UEFA rules will weed out the men from the boys.

We'll see where the well run clubs are then.

I pointed it out because Binny asked me what Rijkaard did achieve before he joined Barcelona.

Ah ok.

Ok... What is relevant is that it shows that they didn't do any better than everyone expected them to do. And I'm unsure as to why you pointed to that in backing Rijkaard, when we need more than a manager that achieves what's generally expected beforehand*.

*Although I would be quite happy with that now, we'd be a few places higher in the table.

Unfair...Holland played fantastic football in that tournament. No body expected them to dominate the way they did. To go out in the semi-final to penalties is no shame.

I think some people are going way over-board on finding faults with Rijkaard. Is this because of the spitting incident?

Holland - Success

Sparta Rotterdam - He took over after the club had spent 5 over years in the bottom half of the table and a club that was in financial turmoil. Not many people would have been surprised if the club was relegated, and the club did get relegated. It was not a success by any means, but to classify that as a failure would be a bit heartless.

Barcelona - Success, but many say he was just a passenger. I beg to differ. He had a crucial role to play and he did it well. Barca are not daft to pay him serious money if anyone was capable of doing his role. He imposed his style/formation/attacking philosophy on the team and picked and coached players to play a brand of football that was the envy of the world.

Gala - He signed a 2 year contract. Gala had changed 5 coaches in 4-5 years prior to the appointment of Rijkaard. The season before he took over they had finished 5th with a 53% win/games played statistic. In his first season, they finished 3rd with a 56% win/games played record. The team also had a decent European campaign (UEFA cup round of 16). They were eliminated via penalties in the quarter finals of the Turkish Cup. His net spend for the first season was 8 million Euro. The fans loved the way Gala played in the season. In his second season, he had a near zero net spend as the club was in financially poor times. His campaign was abruptly cut short after a short string of bad results. Performance on the pitch alone may not have been the motivation for this knee jerk. Either way, he maintained a win % of nearly 58% in his time at Gala, and that is better than what Gala managed in the year before he took over. Gala has some real problems at board level, and any manager who goes there will struggle till that is sorted. There is an interview from Mustafa Yucedag highlighting that point and defending Rijkaard's time in Turkey...i can't find the link for that.

At Liverpool, Rijkaard will be coming in to a better situation. Besides he also is accustomed to the role of working with a Director of Football. As i said earlier, I would be cautiously optimistic. As a manager, he has been a great character. Quite likable too...he has come on leaps and bounds from his days as a player.

I have to be honest and say im loathe to be overly optimistic about whoever we hire (if of course we assume that Nesv are not happy to give Roy his contract to do the job) because there are so many other factors involved in wether or not we can get back to the top. Lets not forget its been 20 years. We may have had sporadic challenges in the past 20 years but we have never had a sound enough footing to go on and on for one reason or another.
Certainly as a club, squad and most importantly first team we have gone backwards in the past 2 years. We are probably at our lowest point in 15 years right now and we have so many players not good enough for a title challenge its untrue.

Its going to take a large investment from nesv and lets be honest a massive slice of luck in appointing the next manager to get it right and start building towards challenging for the title again.
All the candidates have pluses and minuses, be it O'neill (Loads of experience and has won trophies, plays shit football and is mentally unhinged) Boas (Cracking football and an excellent winning record, no experience) etc etc.
There are so many people who could improve where we are that its dangerous to think that anyone would be better. We've been there. Anyone would not be better.
I could pick a favourite, but its no more a sure thing than picking which raindrop will roll down your window the quickest. Its going to take money, a mass clearout, a manager who clicks with Comolli and shit load of luck to get us there.

So summing up there isnt really any point in me saying Frank will be great because of course he might not. Likewise, Flores, Di Matteo, Deschamps et al.
Hopefully the one thing a new manger can do is unite the fans. For too long we were split on Houllier, split on Benitez, split on who the blame lay with regarding our fortunes. Now we have the opportunity (yeah im going to say it) as Barcelona did in 2003 to appoint someone who can start afresh and build something for the future. Its probably going to be a long journey, but with a Rikjaard, Deschamps, Emery at the helm perhaps we can have some positivity on the way.

I'll wait and see who we get, and i hope that at that time it will inspire me and everyone else. Rikjaard would be my choice, simply because ive seen the way he plays football and he had a job very similar to the one we are now faced with at Barcelona. But i will not be in any way dissappointed by a Deschamps or a Bielsa or even a Di Matteo.
Its been a shit few years, i just want a man who can represent where we need to go.

Be fair, Oncy. You can't say Hodgson has split the fans.

Nice post KingJulian...

makes me more interested in Rijkard. Just curious why he went to Gala after Barca. Surely he could have had his pick of big European clubs, no? In his defence, he had Harry Kewell on his team, and Baros too. Can't have been easy (dig).

Wonder how FR would manage in a league with the BPL where a tight defence is key..

Deschamps? Is he a decent manager? Would we play well?
