He's a 19 year old kid who's learning his trade and clearly was lacking some confidence. He improved as the game went on.

I know sunny and im not coming down on him at all. I hope he becomes a world beater. I love his attitude, he always wants the ball, he seems to be a leader in the making and he's under the right manager and senior squad players to help him develop. Just addressing the fact that he was poor before suarez's goal. Onward and upward 🙂

He'll get better mate. I remember Gerrards first few games. He looked like a headless chicken who was way out of his depth but look how he turned out. Not saying Shelvey will or wont - only time will tell. He has got a good eye for a pass though but he was trying a little hard with some of hollywood balls last night. Remind you of someone in his early years ?

Shelvey has the stuff you can't teach already. Game intelligence, energy and a great passing ability. Any hollywood balls last night were just a youthful over eagerness which will come out of his game the more he plays.

The lad is a talent and with more minutes he could easily be a staple of the first 11 within 3 years

He wasn't poor. Not in the game I watched. He played several quality passes before splitting the defence for the Suarez goal. He obviously had a shaky start, but to suggest he was 'poor' is harsh, and for the most part, inaccurate.

He started badly and looked like he wasn't really on the same page - there was one point where he passed the ball and then stood still for a few moments before suddenly realising that the rest of the team were surging forward and trying to catch up.

However, it only took him 5-10 mins to get into the game. Yes, his dead piece delivery was poor, but *that* pass was sublime

When you watch the replay of it, there is about a 2-3 second window where he could have played an easier pass sooner, but there's no guarantee suarez would have been away. He not only placed his pass perfectly, he timed it to perfection as well

the lad has got talent

I am firmly in the "shelvey is going to be great" camp.

There is just something about him and the way he plays that makes me think that.

Have a look at it again Fabs. From my point of view it looks like Shelvey was taking his time and Suarez had to check his run in order to be onside.
I'm not having a go at Shelvey but in retrospect it was a pretty simple pass and most credit IMO goes to Suarez for finding that space behind the two central defenders.

he did have to check his run, i'll give you that, but if the ball was passed too early then theres a chance suarez might not have gotten the chance. I think jonjo left it until the precise moment

I'm sorry Modo, but that's tosh

The ball worked out a treat for Suarez who promptly rounded the keeper and scored.

How in the name of baby jesus could have a pass have been any more effective?

I couldn't give a flying fuck how Shelvey does it as long as he keeps on getting assists.

The moment before Shelvey assisted Suarez.

From my point of view, the pass was pretty much straightforward, nothing spectacular.
Look at the space Suarez created for himself.
From that position Shelvey only had two options, give it to Kuyt or pass it Suarez, who is waiting there even pointing to where he wants the ball. Shelvey had all the time in world.

Listen I know he's 19 and I'm not expecting him to be Gerrard but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I commend him for making the decision to pass Suarez and even spotting him but in all honesty...

it was a simple pass.

+ Lucas pass to Suarez for the first goal was better
+ Lucas pass to Johnson for the second goal was also better.

*trying to come up with a come-back, fails and awaits more banter*

The simple pass would have been to Kuyt. Plus he held on well to the ball to make the pass in the first place.

* Waiting for the resident football expert Ryan to back me up, ignoring everyone else 😉*

The point was made earlier.
If it was Pacheco who made that pass Modo would be demanding that he be given a permanent starting role in the team for the whole of next season.

He rates Pacheco, he clearly doesn't rate Shelvey. He is entitled to his opinion., even if it is wrong 😉

You have over thought this Modo and gone to great lengths to try and suit your argument but the fact is its a great pass.

I have decided that Jonjo will be my new favourite player.
The type of player I like to see, the ability to pick a pass and control the tempo of the game. I think he will develop and learn. He has come back from a pretty lengthy injury, he has played a lot of games for Charlton already and at 19 he has played a decent number of game for us.

I'm happy with his progress, I believe he will improve and continue to develop into a very good player.

Sometimes we expect a bit much from players, all of a sudden he has to be the next Gerrard and carry the team for a decade, or the next Xabi and fill the gaps in our heart and the pitch left behind when he left. Well shove all that, he has some great attributes as a footballer, he has the brain already, he has the vision, he has a good passing range after that there can only be things that are worked on and improved. Im confident that we have a manger, a coaching team and a set of senior players who can help him develop.

After all that, the Raul thread has turned into a discussion on Jonjo.

How is Raul, any news?

He was a little sore initially but suffered concussion when he fainted from the sheer awesomeness of Shelvey's pass.

Hahaha!!!

BTW count, Pacheco & Cahill FTW!!!

I thought the pass into space for Suarez which lead to that penalty shout in the 91 minute was quality as well.

I'm in Modo's camp.
Shelvey seems very ordinary to me as an athlete and on a technical level. He's got a strong mentality though which is great to see.
I'm yet to get excited about him.
While I genuinely think Kelly will easily make it at the top level, I don't have anywhere near the same amount of faith for Jonjo. Not yet anyway. Not sure what he excels at.
