The highly-rated 26-year-old has failed to settle on personal terms at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas saying that the two parties were some way off finalising the deal
Villas-Boas said: 'We're still miles apart regarding agreement with the player.
'We will continue to monitor this situation and other targets for this position. I think we can sort it out. It should be no problem.
'The best outcome for us is for the player to join us. His technical attributes are immense. His pace is fantastic as well. He's been playing magnificently at international level, normally alongside John Terry, and he can add to this squad or any squad.
'He can make this jump. But we are still far away in terms of agreement with the player.'

Coyle said: 'I heard what Andre Villas-Boas said the other day that they were a bit apart. He's obviously heard from the one meeting.
'They've only had one meeting with Gary's representative and then, with the games coming up, I had to make sure Gary was focused. Gary hasn't spoken to Chelsea yet.
'It's like anything else, if I got into a meeting with you, we're not going to shake hands after two seconds and agree, you're going to be apart, that's how negotiations work.
'Whatever comes in the next few days, it'll come, but if it doesn't then Gary remains a Bolton player.'
MANCHESTER UNITED boss Sir Alex Ferguson was last night keeping tabs on Gary Cahill’s proposed move to Chelsea.
And he wasn’t the only one as Bolton boss Owen Coyle aims to use the cash from Cahill’s impending departure to fund an audacious bid for Blackburn contract rebel Junior Hoilett.
Bolton and England defender Cahill, also being tracked by Tottenham and Arsenal, looked set to complete an £8million move to Stamford Bridge after the two clubs agreed on a fee.
But Cahill’s personal terms – thought to be around £120,000-a-week – have held up the deal.
That’s put United on alert with Ferguson reassessing his position on the star, having claimed at his Friday briefing that United were unlikely to sign anyone in the January transfer window.
But with skipper Nemanja Vidic out until next season following a cruciate injury and Rio Ferdinand suffering injury problems too the Old Trafford boss is thought to be having second thoughts on a move for Cahill.
Wherever the England defender ends up Bolton boss Coyle is planning to use the proceeds to tempt £5m-rated Blackburn star Hoilett to the Reebok Stadium.
Hoilett is refusing to sign a new deal at Ewood Park and will wait until his contract runs out in the summer, when he will have his pick of clubs.
But Bolton hope to change his mind with the offer of a £2m-a-year contract.
Hoilett has been tracked by Tottenham, Newcastle and Stoke in recent months but most of his admirers seem happy to wait until the end of the campaign to try to land him on the cheap at a tribunal.
Bolton know that Blackburn need to balance their books and hope to get him before the transfer window closes.
Sky Sports sources understand Bolton defender Gary Cahill travelled to the capital on Friday evening to conclude his Chelsea move.
Bolton agreed a fee with the Blues for the England international before this month's transfer window opened but negotiations have run on throughout the beginning of January.
It appears Cahill has finally reached a deal with the Londoners, with reports suggesting it will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2017.
The centre-back is thought to have travelled to Chelsea on Friday night to undergo a medical, with the deal expected to be confirmed by the end of the weekend.
Should Cahill complete the move, it would mean Premier League strugglers the Trotters will be without their star man for Saturday's trip to Manchester United.
Owen Coyle is thought to be closing on USA international Tim Ream as a replacement for Cahill, with the New York Red Bulls man thought to have been at the Trotters' training ground on Friday
