Firmino/Striker Discussion

Some analysis needs to be done on here regarding this striker thing or playing with quality up front players who can score. Sturridge in his whole career has only scored 20+ goals in one season. We almost won the title in that season where did do that. But how many strikers in this league are guaranteed to score 20+goals every season - I can only see one at the moment and that is Augero, and possibly Costa. However, I don't think it is a case of Firminio vs Sturridge as I do not believe that Sturridge can give us the 20 goals and I honestly think he is a one season wonder at that. We keep harking on about missed chances in the games we have had but honestly if we were to for one moment look as a non-LFC supporter - scoring 4+ goals in 5 games this season is something special anyway ? - right ?

Also you may not believe this but luck/fate also plays a part in all of this (remember Istanbul) - for every chance we create - it does not equate to goals nor will it ever do. Watford are not such a bad side that the score should have been 10-0 even though it may have felt like it should have been - fate won't allow something like this - I mean the humiliation for the opposition would be total for their players/manager/club/town etc.. Also Sturridge has not scored in the PL this season - so in my book he is just an option not a guaranteed scorer of goals. He missed 2+ times yesterday - would you all be saying the same shit if it was Firminio ? - I still remember the sitter he missed against Spurs in the first half of the League Cup.

The other argument about having the proven striker to win you titles is a valid one - I know of two painful games:-

1) Brazil 82 - goals from everywhere but when it mattered they did not have Paolo Rossi.

2) Germany 74 - great Dutch side who lost and lacked a clinical striker who Germany had in Gerd Muller

You could argue that the more attractive team with the passing skills were the losers in both the above games. It kind of worries me that if we come up against Chelsea will we face the same fate ? My own belief is that our front 3 are actually quite clinical finishers more so on the striker level than say other 'false' strikers. The chances they have missed are chances that some of the more clinical strikers miss anyway. The thing to remember is that all three cannot be in the scoring position at the same time - and I don't think they have been instructed to be either.

The Dutch lost in 74 through taking the piss out of the Germans instead of putting it in the net first.

Here's a boss picture of Johan Cruijff at half time

Did not do them any good though did it ? They still lost the world cup.

As for the 42 year old example it is relevant today as it was then and thats why we are discussing the striker non striker situation.

On MOTD Shearer, yeah yeah I know!, focused on Firmino playing the traditional Centre Forward role against Watford. He highlighted how he could perform all of the aspects of the role to a high level. Holding it up, linking the play, winning headers & running in behind. It was interesting to see his performance broken down like that.

He didn't set the world on fire when he arrived but considering his age and the level he's performing at now, I am very excited we have another world class player on our hands.

I wouldn't say he's world class. I think Coutinho is the only player who is performing on the world-class level right now, and he still needs to show he can do it for the full season. However Firmino is still young and he might improve even more.

I think Firmino has pushe that level the whole season. He has been sensational.

Apologies Rurik , reading my post back it appears I'm saying Bobby is world class now. I mean to say he will become a world class player.
